    Data distribution satellite

    A description is given of a data distribution satellite (DDS) system. The DDS would operate in conjunction with the tracking and data relay satellite system to give ground-based users real time, two-way access to instruments in space and space-gathered data. The scope of work includes the following: (1) user requirements are derived; (2) communication scenarios are synthesized; (3) system design constraints and projected technology availability are identified; (4) DDS communications payload configuration is derived, and the satellite is designed; (5) requirements for earth terminals and network control are given; (6) system costs are estimated, both life cycle costs and user fees; and (7) technology developments are recommended, and a technology development plan is given. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) a satellite designed for launch in 2007 is feasible and has 10 Gb/s capacity, 5.5 kW power, and 2000 kg mass; (2) DDS features include on-board baseband switching, use of Ku- and Ka-bands, multiple optical intersatellite links; and (3) system user costs are competitive with projected terrestrial communication costs

    A Review of Training Methods and Instructional Techniques: Implications for Behavioral Skills Training in U.S. Astronauts (DRAFT)

    Long-duration space missions (LDM) place unique physical, environmental and psychological demands on crewmembers that directly affect their ability to live and work in space. A growing body of research on crews working for extended periods in isolated, confined environments reveals the existence of psychological and performance problems in varying degrees of magnitude. The research has also demonstrated that although the environment plays a cathartic role, many of these problems are due to interpersonal frictions (Wood, Lugg, Hysong, & Harm, 1999), and affect each individual differently. Consequently, crewmembers often turn to maladaptive behaviors as coping mechanisms, resulting in decreased productivity and psychological discomfort. From this body of research, critical skills have been identified that can help a crewmember better navigate the psychological challenges of long duration space flight. Although most people lack several of these skills, most of them can be learned; thus, a training program can be designed to teach crewmembers effective leadership, teamwork, and self-care strategies that will help minimize the emergence of maladaptive behaviors. Thus, it is the purpose of this report is twofold: 1) To review the training literature to help determine the optimal instructional methods to use in delivering psychological skill training to the U.S. Astronaut Expedition Corps, and 2) To detail the structure and content of the proposed Astronaut Expedition Corps Psychological Training Program

    This study attempts to describe the history of how the Norwegian language policy in the Nordic Council and The European Global Language Policy at the European Commission are implemented in The National Library Strategy 2020-2023 in Norway and its relevance across Intercultural Communication. Innovation for a democratic Language Technology infrastructure aims to participate in quality education for Literacy, prioritizing Universal Design Development on children's inclusion for social development and a sustainable future. The Research field based on Hermeneutics, Epistemology, Ethics and methodology, are a main foundation for Universal design . (Areskoug Josefsson, Haarr, K. H., Eriksen, S. S., & Brossard BĂžrhaug, F. 2022) Norway holds the chairmanship of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 20221 and also the chairmanship of the Network for Nordic Language Committees.2 In this connection, the focus on challenges concerning minority children inclusion in schools, libraries, and intercultural language centers3 , and how the development and use of language technology can contribute to supporting the Nordic countries' language policies and digital plans is a priority. (Regjeringen; sprakteknologi og de nordiske sprakene, 2022) The National Library, through the Council of language in Norway, has initiated a discussion based on the debate between digital transition and languages policies: “In today's language technology landscape, school children and teachers experience that software and writing support offered by the major international technology giants in the school does not reflect the official spelling of the local languages. Today, it is impossible to include adopted spelling standards in internationally advanced writing tools. The language norms conveyed by the big technology giants thus appear as competitors to the official spelling. The companies also do not allow locally developed language technology for small languages (e.g., Greenlandic, Sami, Norwegian, Nynorsk) to be offered as a local adaptation to the children and young people who receive their education in these languages".     Virtual reality exposure therapy for social phobia

    This thesis presents researches and experiments performed in collaboration with a psychiatrist in order to validate and improve the use of virtual reality in social phobia psychotherapy. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are strongly based on the exposure to anxiety provoking stimuli. Virtual reality seems to be appropriate for such exposures as it allows for on-demand reproduction of reality. The idea has been validated for the treatment of various phobias but is more delicate in the case of social phobia; whereas the sense of presence provoked by the immersion in a virtual environment supports the emergence of fears linked to a location, we had to verify that we can reproduce social phobia related anxiety-provoking stimuli by simulating virtual humans. Therefore, and in order to provide therapists with an efficient virtual reality system dedicated to the exposure to social situations, we have developed software solutions supporting different immersion setups and enabling realistic simulations of inhabited virtual environments. We have experimented with public speaking scenarios within a preliminary study, three clinical case studies and a validation study on 200 subjects. We have been able to confirm that our virtual reality platform fulfilled therapeutic exposure requirements for social phobia. Moreover, we have been able to show that virtual reality exposure has additional advantages such as the possibility to improve clinical assessment with embedded monitoring tools. Our experiments with physiological measurements and eye tracking technology during immersion leaded to the validation of systems for objective and reliable assessment of patients' safety behaviors. The observation of such phobic reactions has confirmed the simulation impact and may provide therapists with enhanced pathological progression monitoring. During our experiments, we have also been able to observe that subjects' reactions during immersion were so much influenced by their sensitivity to fearful stimuli that their cognitive reactions were 'overloaded' by the arousal of anxiety and emotions. This has allowed us to consider that the sense of presence was more importantly related to the subjective impact of the content than to the technological process

    From rituals to films: a case study of the visual rhetoric of Igbo culture in Nolywood films

    Many reasons have been advanced as to why the video film industry in Nigeria has been so successful financially and in building loyal audiences among Africans around the world. The present thesis argues that Nollywood films help to provide a time and a place for resolving deep-felt tensions in an increasingly modern world while affirming an authentic African [Igbo] identity. The way contemporary video films are produced brings these films close to the dominant emotional and identity questions posed by the Igbos, Nigerians and Africans alike. Particularly in Nigeria, the Nollywood film industry has brought familiar symbolic rituals of cultures on to the screen for audiences’ pleasure. Exploring the recurrent themes of these films raises consciousness about Nollywood as a new and special site where cultures are generated and regenerated. Here, major questions of values and meanings of life are explored, which raise awareness of the Igbo’s journey as a people. This thesis uses textual analysis as well as indigenous audience focus-group analysis to explore cultural representations in Nollywood. A wide range of participants were interviewed in the eight focus-group sessions that were conducted. Two in-depth interview sessions were also carried out on some Nollywood actors. Broadly, this research objectives were: ‱ to identify a conceptual framework for understanding the culture of Africa and Nigeria, in particular, using the concept of ‘communalism’. ‱ to determine the range of reception and consumption modalities of Nollywood products in Nigeria by means of focus-group interviews. ‱ to explore the impact of Nollywood as an industry in the wake of globalization and in the context of current global trends. In pursuing these goals, this study looked at selected key films including, Things Fall Apart (1986), Coronation (2004), Bless Me (2005), Igodo: The Land of the Living Dead (1999), Living in Bondage (1992), My Best Friend (2003), Oil Village (2001), Widow (2007), Last Ofala (2002), Fool at 40 (2006), Festival of Fire (1999) and a lot more as listed in this study’s filmography. At the end this research found that the experience of Nollywood films is something of a centripetal process of communication for the Igbo and Nigerian viewers who believe that these texts help build their societies, culturally from below

It has been organized each year in a different place in Europe in cooperation with a host university (Toulon 1998, Verona 1999, Derby 2000, Mons 2001, Lisbon 2002, Oviedo 2003, Toulon 2004, Palermo 2005, Paisley 2006, Thessaloniki 2007, Florence, 2008). Originally focusing on higher education institutions, the research themes have over the years been extended to the health sector, local government, tourism, logistics, banking services. Around a hundred delegates from about twenty different countries participate each year and nearly one thousand research papers have been published over the last ten years, making of the conference one of the major events in the field of quality in services
