Separating Bounded Arithmetics by Herbrand Consistency
The problem of separating the hierarchy of bounded arithmetic has
been studied in the paper. It is shown that the notion of Herbrand Consistency,
in its full generality, cannot separate the theory from ; though it can
separate from . This extends a
result of L. A. Ko{\l}odziejczyk (2006), by showing the unprovability of the

Herbrand Consistency of Some Arithmetical Theories
G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem is proved for Herbrand consistency of
some arithmetical theories with bounded induction, by using a technique of
logarithmic shrinking the witnesses of bounded formulas, due to Z. Adamowicz
[Herbrand consistency and bounded arithmetic, \textit{Fundamenta Mathematicae}
171 (2002) 279--292]. In that paper, it was shown that one cannot always shrink
the witness of a bounded formula logarithmically, but in the presence of
Herbrand consistency, for theories with , any witness for any bounded formula can be shortened logarithmically. This
immediately implies the unprovability of Herbrand consistency of a theory
in itself.
In this paper, the above results are generalized for . Also after tailoring the definition of Herbrand
consistency for we prove the corresponding theorems for . Thus the Herbrand version of G\"odel's second incompleteness
theorem follows for the theories and
Some considerations on the compile-time analysis of constraint logic programs
This paper discusses some issues which arise in the dataflow analysis of constraint logic programming (CLP) languages. The basic technique applied is that of abstract interpretation. First, some types of optimizations possible in a number of CLP systems (including efficient parallelization) are presented and the information that has to be obtained at compile-time in order to be able to implement such optimizations is considered. Two approaches are then proposed and discussed for obtaining this information for a CLP program: one based on an analysis of a CLP metainterpreter using standard Prolog analysis tools, and a second one based on direct analysis of the CLP program. For the second approach an abstract domain which approximates groundness (also referred to as "definiteness") information (i.e. constraint to a single valué) and the related abstraction functions are presented
On the Resolution Semiring
In this thesis, we study a semiring structure with a product based on theresolution rule of logic programming. This mathematical object was introducedinitially in the setting of the geometry of interaction program in order to modelthe cut-elimination procedure of linear logic. It provides us with an algebraicand abstract setting, while being presented in a syntactic and concrete way, inwhich a theoretical study of computation can be carried on.We will review first the interactive interpretation of proof theory withinthis semiring via the categorical axiomatization of the geometry of interactionapproach. This interpretation establishes a way to translate functional programsinto a very simple form of logic programs.Secondly, complexity theory problematics will be considered: while thenilpotency problem in the semiring we study is undecidable in general, it willappear that certain restrictions allow for characterizations of (deterministicand non-deterministic) logarithmic space and (deterministic) polynomial timecomputation
Podstawy matematyki bez aktualnej nieskończoności
Contemporary mathematics significantly uses notions which belong to ideal
mathematics (in Hilbert’s sense) – which is expressed in language which essentially
uses actual infinity. However, we do not have a meaningful notion
of truth for such languages. We can only reduce the notion of truth to finitistic
mathematics via axiomatic theories. Nevertheless, justification of truth
of axioms themselves exceeds the capabilities of the theory based on these
axioms.
On the other hand, we can easily decide the truth or falsity of a statement
in finite structures. The aim of this dissertation is to identify the fragment
of mathematics, which is of the finitistic character. The fragment of mathematics
which can be described without actual infinity. This is the part of
mathematics which can be described in finite models and for which the truth
of its statements can be verified within finite models. We call this fragment of
mathematics with a term introduced by Knuth – the concrete mathematics.
This part of mathematics is of computational character and it is closer to
our empirical base, which makes it more difficult.
We consider concrete foundations of mathematics, in particular the concrete
model theory and semantics without actual infinity. We base on the
notion of FM–representability, introduced by Mostowski, as an explication of
expressibility without actual infinity. By the Mostowski’s FM–representability
theorem, FM–representable notions are exactly those, which are recursive
with the halting problem as an oracle.
We show how to express basic concepts of model theory in the language
without actual infinity. We investigate feasibility of the classical model–
theoretic constructions in the concrete model theory. We present the Concrete
Completeness Theorem and the Low Completeness Theorem; the Concrete
Omitting Types Theorem; and Preservation Theorems. We identify
the constructions which are not admissible in the concrete model theory by
showing stages of these constructions which are not allowed in the concrete
framework. We show which arguments from the axiomatic model theory fail
in the concrete model theory.
Moreover, we investigate how to approximate truth for finite models.
In particular we study the properties of approximate FM–truth definitions
which are expressible in modal logic. We introduce modal logic SL, axioms
of which mimic the properties of a specific approximate FM–truth definition.
We show that SL is the modal logic of any approximate FM–truth definition.
This is done by proving a theorem analogous to Solovay’s completeness
Z drugiej strony w strukturach skończonych jesteśmy w stanie w prosty sposób rozstrzygać prawdziwość i fałszywość twierdzeń.
Rule-based Metaprogramming for Smart Spaces
The motivation of this work is goes back to the objective of achieving interoperability in multiparty environments such as ubiquitous systems. Full interoperability in an open environment requires mutually sharing the behavior of the participants, so that the behavioral interoperability becomes as relevant as interoperability of data. This requires analysis or evaluation of behavioral descriptions from untrusted parties in a controlled manner. Furthermore we need to manage the evaluation process based on the content and provenance of the descriptions and other information on which the descriptions operate. This information allows one to choose which behaviour is to be used and which data is to be operated on. To enable this vision we propose to present behavioral descriptions as Answer Set Programming (ASP) rules. In this work we present a method for the evaluation of ASP rules based on metaprogramming: the evaluator for the rules is implemented using ASP rules themselves. To facilitate metaevaluation, we transform rules to a reified format, which enables representing rules as facts, and construct the metaevaluator to work directly on this reified format. Facts corresponding to reified rules and the metaevaluation rules are then treated by native ASP tools. We give a proof that our metaevaluator adheres to the stable model semantics for ASP evaluation. Having rules in the reified format is beneficial as behavioral rules can then be shared and manipulated as any other data. We have implemented a mechanism which maintains the provenance information of data during the rule evaluation along with hooks to allow control over the context of the use of that data. This allows attaching arbitrary metainformation to rules and facts and allows independently creating policies which control on how different data is handled in the ASP solving phase. In addition to the metaevaluation phase, we have implemented syntactical safety analysis of reified rules. These methods enable sharing, analyzing and executing behavioral descriptions in a controlled manner within the same semantic ASP framework, providing one solution for the interoperability problem. The evaluation of ASP rules has two logical phases: grounding and actual solving. We have separated provenance handling and syntactic analysis to the metagrounding phase with the intention that rules and data, which do not match the provenance criteria, are never delivered to the solving phase. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first implementation of a metagrounder for ASP programs. According to performance analysis, the metagrounder is not yet competitive with current grounder technology.Tämän opinnäytteen motivaationa on yhteensopivuus ubiikkien järjestelmien kaltaisissa usean käyttäjän ympäristöissä. Answer Set Programming, ASP).
