The Brushless Doubly-Fed Reluctance Machine (BDFRM) has been widely investigated in numerous research studies since it is brushless and cageless and there is no winding on the rotor of this emerging machine. This feature leads to several advantages for this machine in comparison with its induction counterpart, i.e., Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Machine (BDFIM). Less maintenance, less power losses, and also more reliability are the major advantages of BDFRM compared to BDFIM. The design complexity of its reluctance rotor, as well as flux patterns for indirect connection between the two windings mounted on the stator including power winding and control winding, have restricted the development of this machine technology. In the literature, there is not a comprehensive review of the research studies related to BDFRM. In this paper, the previous research studies are reviewed from different points of view, such as operation, design, control, transient model, dynamic model, power factor, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), and losses. It is revealed that the BDFRM is still evolving since the theoretical results have shown that this machine operates efficiently if it is well-designed

    Hybrid Field Oriented and Direct Torque Control for Sensorless BLDC Motors Used in Aerial Drones

    In this study, a sensorless hybrid control scheme for brushless direct current (BLDC) motors for use in multirotor aerial vehicles is introduced. In such applications, the control scheme must satisfy high-performance demands for a wide range of rotor speeds and must be robust to motor parameter uncertainties and measurement noise. The proposed controller combines field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC) techniques to take benefit of the advantages offered by each of these techniques individually. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme over a wide range of rotor speeds as well as good robustness against parameter uncertainties within -5to + 10% for inductance and -5to + 5% for resistance parameters. The proposed hybrid controller is robust also against noise in voltage and current measurements. In order to verify the results from simulation, the proposed hybrid controller is implemented in hardware using the TI C2000 Piccolo Launchpad and TI BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM BoosterPack. Testing is done with a Bull Running motor typically used in aerial drones. Testing experiments demonstrate that the hybrid controller reduces the rotor speed ripple when compared to DTC while operating in steady-state mode and decreases the response time to desired speed changes when compared to FOC

    Sensorless Control of Brushless DC Motor in Hydraulic Application

    In this master thesis we have studied the possibilities of implementing and controlling the speed of a brushless DC motor in an hydraulic application developed by BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems AB. The hydraulic application is a coupling that give vehicles intelligent all-wheel drive. Today, the hydraulic application uses hydraulic pressure controlled by an ordinary DC motor to produce the all-wheel drive. The purpose of this thesis was to test if the DC motor could be substituted to a brushless variant by looking at different ways of controlling the speed of the brushless motor and evaluate its possibilities. The controllers were tested and evaluated by constructing a model of the brushless DC motor, together with different controllers, in Simulink. Two kinds of controllers were implemented and tested in Simulink. The first one was field-oriented control with field weakening, and the second one was sixstep commutation. Field-oriented control is a very computationally heavy method compared to the six-step commutation which is one of the simplest ways to control a brushless DC motor. What makes the control implementation a little bit harder is that there can be no angle- or speed sensors involved, so both control methods need to be sensorless. The field-oriented control with field weakening was made sensorless with a sliding mode observer and the six-step commutation was made sensorless via back-EMF sensing. The results show that the alternative that seems to have the upper hand is the field-oriented control, even if it may be harder to implement. It also shows that if some more work is put on the control design, the six-step commutation may also be a good candidate. Overall, this thesis shows that it is theoretically possible to implement a brushless DC motor in the hydraulic application

    High-frequency issues using rotating voltage injections intended for position self-sensing

    The rotor position is required in many control schemes in electrical drives. Replacing position sensors by machine self-sensing estimators increases reliability and reduces cost. Solutions based on tracking magnetic anisotropies through the monitoring of the incremental inductance variations are efficient at low-speed and standstill operations. This inductance can be estimated by measuring the response to the injection of high-frequency signals. In general however, the selection of the optimal frequency is not addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we propose discrete-time operations based on a rotating voltage injection at frequencies up to one third of the sampling frequency used by the digital controller. The impact on the rotation-drive, the computational requirement, the robustness and the effect of the resistance on the position estimation are analyzed regarding the signal frequency

    Low-cost, high-resolution, fault-robust position and speed estimation for PMSM drives operating in safety-critical systems

    In this paper it is shown how to obtain a low-cost, high-resolution and fault-robust position sensing system for permanent magnet synchronous motor drives operating in safety-critical systems, by combining high-frequency signal injection with binary Hall-effect sensors. It is shown that the position error signal obtained via high-frequency signal injection can be merged easily into the quantization-harmonic-decoupling vector tracking observer used to process the Hall-effect sensor signals. The resulting algorithm provides accurate, high-resolution estimates of speed and position throughout the entire speed range; compared to state-of-the-art drives using Hall-effect sensors alone, the low speed performance is greatly improved in healthy conditions and also following position sensor faults. It is envisaged that such a sensing system can be successfully used in applications requiring IEC 61508 SIL 3 or ISO 26262 ASIL D compliance, due to its extremely high mean time to failure and to the very fast recovery of the drive following Hall-effect sensor faults at low speeds. Extensive simulation and experimental results are provided on a 3.7 kW permanent magnet drive

The BDFRG has been receiving increasing attention because of the use of partially rated power electronics, the high reliability of brushless design, and competitive performance to its popular slip-ring counterpart, the doubly fed induction generator. The controller viability has been demonstrated on a BDFRG laboratory test facility for emulation of variable speed and loading conditions of wind turbines or pump drives
