    Social influence analysis in microblogging platforms - a topic-sensitive based approach

    The use of Social Media, particularly microblogging platforms such as Twitter, has proven to be an effective channel for promoting ideas to online audiences. In a world where information can bias public opinion it is essential to analyse the propagation and influence of information in large-scale networks. Recent research studying social media data to rank users by topical relevance have largely focused on the “retweet", “following" and “mention" relations. In this paper we propose the use of semantic profiles for deriving influential users based on the retweet subgraph of the Twitter graph. We introduce a variation of the PageRank algorithm for analysing users’ topical and entity influence based on the topical/entity relevance of a retweet relation. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms related algorithms including HITS, InDegree and Topic-Sensitive PageRank.     ONTOLOGY BASED TECHNICAL SKILL SIMILARITY

    Online job boards have become a major platform for technical talent procurement and job search. These job portals have given rise to challenging matching and search problems. The core matching or search happens between technical skills of the job requirements and the candidate\u27s profile or keywords. The extensive list of technical skills and its polyonymous nature makes it less effective to perform a direct keyword matching. This results in substandard job matching or search results which misses out a closely matching candidate on account of it not having the exact skills. It is important to use a semantic similarity measure between skills to improve the relevance of the results. This paper proposes a semantic similarity measure between technical skills using a knowledge based approach. The approach builds an ontology using DBpedia and uses it to derive a similarity score. Feature based ontology similarity measures are used to derive a similarity score between two skills. The ontology also helps in resolving a base skill from its multiple representations. The paper discusses implementation of custom ontology, similarity measuring system and performance of the system in comparing technical skills. The proposed approach performs better than the Resumatcher system in finding the similarity between skills. Keywords

    A Unified multilingual semantic representation of concepts

    Semantic representation lies at the core of several applications in Natural Language Processing. However, most existing semantic representation techniques cannot be used effectively for the representation of individual word senses. We put forward a novel multilingual concept representation, called MUFFIN , which not only enables accurate representation of word senses in different languages, but also provides multiple advantages over existing approaches. MUFFIN represents a given concept in a unified semantic space irrespective of the language of interest, enabling cross-lingual comparison of different concepts. We evaluate our approach in two different evaluation benchmarks, semantic similarity and Word Sense Disambiguation, reporting state-of-the-art performance on several standard datasets

    Thematically Reinforced Explicit Semantic Analysis

    We present an extended, thematically reinforced version of Gabrilovich and Markovitch's Explicit Semantic Analysis (ESA), where we obtain thematic information through the category structure of Wikipedia. For this we first define a notion of categorical tfidf which measures the relevance of terms in categories. Using this measure as a weight we calculate a maximal spanning tree of the Wikipedia corpus considered as a directed graph of pages and categories. This tree provides us with a unique path of "most related categories" between each page and the top of the hierarchy. We reinforce tfidf of words in a page by aggregating it with categorical tfidfs of the nodes of these paths, and define a thematically reinforced ESA semantic relatedness measure which is more robust than standard ESA and less sensitive to noise caused by out-of-context words. We apply our method to the French Wikipedia corpus, evaluate it through a text classification on a 37.5 MB corpus of 20 French newsgroups and obtain a precision increase of 9-10% compared with standard ESA.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, presented at CICLing 201

    ExTaSem! Extending, Taxonomizing and Semantifying Domain Terminologies

    We introduce EXTASEM!, a novel approach for the automatic learning of lexical taxonomies from domain terminologies. First, we exploit a very large semantic network to collect thousands of in-domain textual definitions. Second, we extract (hyponym, hypernym) pairs from each definition with a CRF-based algorithm trained on manuallyvalidated data. Finally, we introduce a graph induction procedure which constructs a full-fledged taxonomy where each edge is weighted according to its domain pertinence. EXTASEM! achieves state-of-the-art results in the following taxonomy evaluation experiments: (1) Hypernym discovery, (2) Reconstructing gold standard taxonomies, and (3) Taxonomy quality according to structural measures.     Finding co-solvers on Twitter, with a little help from Linked Data

    In this paper we propose a method for suggesting potential collaborators for solving innovation challenges online, based on their competence, similarity of interests and social proximity with the user. We rely on Linked Data to derive a measure of semantic relatedness that we use to enrich both user profiles and innovation problems with additional relevant topics, thereby improving the performance of co-solver recommendation. We evaluate this approach against state of the art methods for query enrichment based on the distribution of topics in user profiles, and demonstrate its usefulness in recommending collaborators that are both complementary in competence and compatible with the user. Our experiments are grounded using data from the social networking service Twitter.com
