    Semantic web-based document: editing and browsing in AktiveDoc

    This paper presents a tool for supporting sharing and reuse of knowledge in document creation (writing) and use (reading). Semantic Web technologies are used to support the production of ontology based annotations while the document is written. Free text annotations (comments) can be added to integrate the knowledge in the document. In addition the tool uses external services (e.g. a Semantic Web harvester) to propose relevant content to writing user, enabling easy knowledge reuse. Similar facilities are provided for readers when their task does not coincide with the author’s one. The tool is specifically designed for Knowledge Management in organisations. In this paper we present and discuss how Semantic Web technologies are designed and integrated in the system

    The latest Semantic Web developments and insights in knowledge management challenge the new era of semantic-based knowledge-management systems, where lies the new possibilities that Semantic Web affords for improved knowledge management. Connectivity and interoperability of knowledge management systems is the key to the vision of the future. We need a comprehensive framework that addresses main issues related to distributed Knowledge Management. Semantic Web Services (SWS) is the next major generation of the Web in which e-services and business communication become more knowledge-based. It proposes to extend the traditional Web Services technologies with its key enabling technologies of ontologies and semantics; to solve the problem of heterogeneity and interoperability of data across applications. This makes it possible to select, integrate and invocate services dynamically, which enable services to adapt themselves to changes without human intervention. The main purpose of this paper is to present the relevance of SWS technologies to KMS. Further, we discuss about the two major initiatives in SWS research. Later, we will propose ontology based semantic web services framework for KMS. Our focus is in the web service provider layer where we will introduce the three main components; knowledge manager, web service manager and ontology mapping manager

    Currently, the exploration, improvement, and application of knowledge management and semantic technologies to health care are in a revolution from Health 2.0 to Health 3.0. However, what accurately are knowledge management and semantic technologies and how can they improve a healthcare system? The study aims to review what constitute a Health 3.0 system, and identify key factors in the health care system. First, the study analyzes semantic web, definition of Health 2.0 and Health 3.0, new models for linked data: (1) semantic web and linked data graphs (2) semantic web and healthcare information challenges, OWL and linked knowledge, from linked data to linked knowledge, consistent knowledge representation, and Health 3.0 system. Secondly, the research analyzes two case studies of Health 3.0, and summarizes six key factors that constitute a Health 3.0 system. Finally, the study recommends the application of knowledge management and semantic technologies to Health 3.0 health care model requires the cooperation among emergency care, insurance companies, hospitals, pharmacies, government, specialists, academic researchers, and customer (patients)

    At the beginning of the decade, the Agent Mediated Knowledge Management workshops series as well as Bonifacio's theoretical approach layed the foundations of a new eld of distributed knowledge management based upon the agent paradigm. The agent based approach enables key features for knowledge management. The local management of knowledge by agents allows to go beyond the limitations of centralized knowledge management. Thus, knowledge can be maintained in each agent at a coarse-grained level, with different representations. In the mean time the rise of the semantic web technologies enables a new range of possibilities for agents dedicated to knowledge management. In this chapter we investigate the integration of semantic web technologies into an agent architecture that allows agents to represent their knowledge and their behavior in a semantic manner. We present the semantic agent model, its implementation and we discuss the perpectives open by semantic agents

    The usage of Wikis for the purpose of knowledge management within a business company is only of value if the stored information can be found easily. The fundamental characteristic of a Wiki, its easy and informal usage, results in large amounts of steadily changing, unstructured documents. The widely used full-text search often provides search results of insufficient accuracy. In this paper, we will present an approach likely to improve search quality, through the use of Semantic Web, Text Mining, and Case Based Reasoning (CBR) technologies. Search results are more precise and complete because, in contrast to full-text search, the proposed knowledge-based search operates on the semantic layer

    Context: Web information technologies developed and applied in the last decade have considerably changed the way web applications operate and have revolutionised information management and knowledge discovery. Social technologies, user-generated classification schemes and formal semantics have a far-reaching sphere of influence. They promote collective intelligence, support interoperability, enhance sustainability and instigate innovation. Contribution: The research carried out and consequent publications follow the various paradigms of semantic technologies, assess each approach, evaluate its efficiency, identify the challenges involved and propose a comprehensive framework for web information modelling and semantic annotation, which is the thesis’ original contribution to knowledge. The proposed framework assists web information modelling, facilitates semantic annotation and information retrieval, enables system interoperability and enhances information quality. Implications: Semantic technologies coupled with social media and end-user involvement can instigate innovative influence with wide organisational implications that can benefit a considerable range of industries. The scalable and sustainable business models of social computing and the collective intelligence of organisational social media can be resourcefully paired with internal research and knowledge from interoperable information repositories, back-end databases and legacy systems.     Multivalent Metadata : Exploiting the Layers of Meaning in Digital Resources

    The rapid growth of the World Wide Web was due in part to the simplicity of the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). It is anticipated that the next generation of web technology, coined the Semantic Web, by Tim Berners-Lee (1989, p. 1), will be driven by the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The XML suite of technologies provides a framework for the application of metadata, and hence semantic information, to web resources. Advantages of a semantic web include improved sharing and reuse of resources, enhanced search mechanisms and knowledge management. The knowledge or meaning contained in digital information may vary according to the perspective of the viewer and can be seen therefore as multivalent in nature. Semantic information that is highly relevant to one user may be of no interest to another. The aim of this project was to demonstrate the layers of meaning inherent in a data sample and how they could be encapsulated in metadata then accessed and manipulated using current technologies, thus leveraging the knowledge contained. Analysis of the data sample, a typical component of an online training product, determined meaningful ways in which the knowledge contained could be reused and adapted. From this analysis a set of test criteria was generated. Metadata was then created for the sample data and the tests implemented using a range of XML technologies

    A Semantic Web Based Approach to Knowledge Management for Grid Applications

    Knowledge has become increasingly important to support intelligent process automation and collaborative problem solving in large-scale science over the Internet. This paper addresses distributed knowledge management, its approach and methodology, in the context of grid application. We start by analyzing the nature of grid computing and its requirements for knowledge support; then, we discuss knowledge characteristics and the challenges for knowledge management on the grid. A semantic Web-based approach is proposed to tackle the six challenges of the knowledge lifecycle - namely, those of acquiring, modeling, retrieving, reusing, publishing, and maintaining knowledge. To facilitate the application of the approach, a systematic methodology is conceived and designed to provide a general implementation guideline. We use a real-world Grid application, the GEODISE project, as a case study in which the core semantic Web technologies such as ontologies, semantic enrichment, and semantic reasoning are used for knowledge engineering and management.
