Pragmatic interoperability in the enterprise : a research agenda
Eective collaboration among today's enterprises is indispensable. Such collaborative synergy is important to foster the creation of innovative value-added products and services that would have otherwise been dicult to achieve if enterprises work in isolation. However, it is a widely held belief that interoperability problems have been one of the perennial hurdles in achieving such collaboration. This research aims to improve the current state of the art in enterprise interoperability research by zeroing in on the notion of pragmatic interoperability(PI). When enterprise systems collaborate by exchanging information, PI goes beyond the compatibility between the structure and the meaning of shared information, it further ensures that the intended eect of the message exchange is realized. This paper outlines our research agenda to address the analysis, design, development and evaluation of a pragmatically interoperable solution for enterprise collaboration
Practitioner requirements for integrated Knowledge-Based Engineering in Product Lifecycle Management.
The effective management of knowledge as capital is considered essential to the
success of engineering product/service systems. As Knowledge Management (KM) and
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) practice gain industrial adoption, the
question of functional overlaps between both the approaches becomes evident.
This article explores the interoperability between PLM and Knowledge-Based
Engineering (KBE) as a strategy for engineering KM. The opinion of key KBE/PLM
practitioners are systematically captured and analysed. A set of ranked business
functionalities to be fulfiled by the KBE/PLM systems integration is elicited.
The article provides insights for the researchers and the practitioners playing
both the user and development roles on the future needs for knowledge systems
based on PLM
A framework for deriving semantic web services
Web service-based development represents an emerging approach for the development of distributed information systems. Web services have been mainly applied by software practitioners as a means to modularize system functionality that can be offered across a network (e.g., intranet and/or the Internet). Although web services have been
predominantly developed as a technical solution for integrating software systems, there is a more business-oriented aspect that developers and enterprises need to deal with in order to benefit from the full potential of web services in an electronic market. This ‘ignored’ aspect is the representation of the semantics underlying the services themselves as well as the ‘things’ that the services manage. Currently languages like the Web Services Description Language (WSDL) provide the syntactic means to describe web services, but
lack in providing a semantic underpinning. In order to harvest all the benefits of web services technology, a framework has been developed for deriving business semantics from syntactic descriptions of web services. The benefits of such a framework are two-fold. Firstly, the framework provides a way to gradually construct domain ontologies from previously defined technical services. Secondly, the framework enables the
migration of syntactically defined web services toward semantic web services. The study follows a design research approach which (1) identifies the problem area and its relevance from an industrial case study and previous research, (2) develops the
framework as a design artifact and (3) evaluates the application of the framework through a relevant scenario
An Ontology Approach for Knowledge Acquisition and Development of Health Information System (HIS)
This paper emphasizes various knowledge acquisition approaches in terms of tacit and explicit knowledge management that can be helpful to capture, codify and communicate within medical unit. The semantic-based knowledge management system (SKMS) supports knowledge acquisition and incorporates various approaches to provide systematic practical platform to knowledge practitioners and to identify various roles of healthcare professionals, tasks that can be performed according to personnel’s competencies, and activities that are carried out as a part of tasks to achieve defined goals of clinical process. This research outcome gives new vision to IT practitioners to manage the tacit and implicit knowledge in XML format which can be taken as foundation for the development of information systems (IS) so that domain end-users can receive timely healthcare related services according to their demands and needs
A standards-based ICT framework to enable a service-oriented approach to clinical decision support
This research provides evidence that standards based Clinical Decision Support (CDS)
at the point of care is an essential ingredient of electronic healthcare service delivery. A
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based solution is explored, that serves as a task
management system to coordinate complex distributed and disparate IT systems,
processes and resources (human and computer) to provide standards based CDS.
This research offers a solution to the challenges in implementing computerised CDS such
as integration with heterogeneous legacy systems. Reuse of components and services to
reduce costs and save time. The benefits of a sharable CDS service that can be reused by
different healthcare practitioners to provide collaborative patient care is demonstrated.
This solution provides orchestration among different services by extracting data from
sources like patient databases, clinical knowledge bases and evidence-based clinical
guidelines (CGs) in order to facilitate multiple CDS requests coming from different
healthcare settings. This architecture aims to aid users at different levels of Healthcare
Delivery Organizations (HCOs) to maintain a CDS repository, along with monitoring and
managing services, thus enabling transparency.
The research employs the Design Science research methodology (DSRM) combined with
The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), an open source group initiative for
Enterprise Architecture Framework (EAF). DSRM’s iterative capability addresses the
rapidly evolving nature of workflows in healthcare. This SOA based solution uses
standards-based open source technologies and platforms, the latest healthcare standards
by HL7 and OMG, Decision Support Service (DSS) and Retrieve, Update Locate Service
(RLUS) standard. Combining business process management (BPM) technologies,
business rules with SOA ensures the HCO’s capability to manage its processes. This
architectural solution is evaluated by successfully implementing evidence based CGs at
the point of care in areas such as; a) Diagnostics (Chronic Obstructive Disease), b) Urgent
Referral (Lung Cancer), c) Genome testing and integration with CDS in screening
(Lynch’s syndrome). In addition to medical care, the CDS solution can benefit
organizational processes for collaborative care delivery by connecting patients,
physicians and other associated members. This framework facilitates integration of
different types of CDS ideal for the different healthcare processes, enabling sharable CDS
capabilities within and across organizations

Computerization of workflows, guidelines and care pathways: a review of implementation challenges for process-oriented health information systems
There is a need to integrate the various theoretical frameworks and formalisms for modeling clinical guidelines, workflows, and pathways, in order to move beyond providing support for individual clinical decisions and toward the provision of process-oriented, patient-centered, health information systems (HIS). In this review, we analyze the challenges in developing process-oriented HIS that formally model guidelines, workflows, and care pathways. A qualitative meta-synthesis was performed on studies published in English between 1995 and 2010 that addressed the modeling process and reported the exposition of a new methodology, model, system implementation, or system architecture. Thematic analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and data visualisation techniques were used to identify and cluster the underlying implementation ‘challenge’ themes. One hundred and eight relevant studies were selected for review. Twenty-five underlying ‘challenge’ themes were identified. These were clustered into 10 distinct groups, from which a conceptual model of the implementation process was developed. We found that the development of systems supporting individual clinical decisions is evolving toward the implementation of adaptable care pathways on the semantic web, incorporating formal, clinical, and organizational ontologies, and the use of workflow management systems. These architectures now need to be implemented and evaluated on a wider scale within clinical settings
From service-oriented architecture to service-oriented enterprise
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) was originally motivated by enterprise demands for better business-technology alignment and higher flexibility and reuse. SOA evolved from an initial set of ideas and principles to Web services (WS) standards now widely accepted by industry. The next phase of SOA development is concerned with a scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure based on these standards, and guidelines, methods and techniques for developing and maintaining service delivery in dynamic enterprise settings. In this paper we discuss the principles and main elements of SOA. We then present an overview of WS standards. And finally we come back to the original motivation for SOA, and how these can be realized
