An architecture for autonomic web service process planning
Web service composition is a technology that has received
considerable attention in the last number of years. Languages and tools to aid in the process of creating composite web services have been received specific attention. Web service composition is the process of linking single web services together in order to accomplish more complex tasks. One area of web service composition that has not received as much attention is the area of dynamic error handling and re-planning, enabling autonomic composition. Given a repository of service descriptions and a task to complete, it is possible for AI planners to automatically create a plan that will achieve this goal. If however a service in the plan is unavailable or erroneous the plan will fail. Motivated by this problem, this paper suggests autonomous re-planning as a means to overcome dynamic problems. Our solution involves automatically recovering from faults and creating a context-dependent alternate plan
Policy Enforcement with Proactive Libraries
Software libraries implement APIs that deliver reusable functionalities. To
correctly use these functionalities, software applications must satisfy certain
correctness policies, for instance policies about the order some API methods
can be invoked and about the values that can be used for the parameters. If
these policies are violated, applications may produce misbehaviors and failures
at runtime. Although this problem is general, applications that incorrectly use
API methods are more frequent in certain contexts. For instance, Android
provides a rich and rapidly evolving set of APIs that might be used incorrectly
by app developers who often implement and publish faulty apps in the
marketplaces. To mitigate this problem, we introduce the novel notion of
proactive library, which augments classic libraries with the capability of
proactively detecting and healing misuses at run- time. Proactive libraries
blend libraries with multiple proactive modules that collect data, check the
correctness policies of the libraries, and heal executions as soon as the
violation of a correctness policy is detected. The proactive modules can be
activated or deactivated at runtime by the users and can be implemented without
requiring any change to the original library and any knowledge about the
applications that may use the library. We evaluated proactive libraries in the
context of the Android ecosystem. Results show that proactive libraries can
automati- cally overcome several problems related to bad resource usage at the
cost of a small overhead.Comment: O. Riganelli, D. Micucci and L. Mariani, "Policy Enforcement with

Distributed aspect-oriented service composition for business compliance governance with public service processes
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) offers a technical foundation for Enterprise Application Integration and
business collaboration through service-based business components. With increasing process outsourcing and cloud computing, enterprises need process-level integration and collaboration (process-oriented) to quickly launch new business processes for new customers and products. However, business processes that cross organisationsā compliance regulation boundaries are still unaddressed. We introduce a distributed aspect-oriented service composition approach, which enables multiple process clients hot-plugging their business compliance models (business rules, fault handling policy, and execution monitor) to BPEL business processes
Prototype of Fault Adaptive Embedded Software for Large-Scale Real-Time Systems
This paper describes a comprehensive prototype of large-scale fault adaptive
embedded software developed for the proposed Fermilab BTeV high energy physics
experiment. Lightweight self-optimizing agents embedded within Level 1 of the
prototype are responsible for proactive and reactive monitoring and mitigation
based on specified layers of competence. The agents are self-protecting,
detecting cascading failures using a distributed approach. Adaptive,
reconfigurable, and mobile objects for reliablility are designed to be
self-configuring to adapt automatically to dynamically changing environments.
These objects provide a self-healing layer with the ability to discover,
diagnose, and react to discontinuities in real-time processing. A generic
modeling environment was developed to facilitate design and implementation of
hardware resource specifications, application data flow, and failure mitigation
strategies. Level 1 of the planned BTeV trigger system alone will consist of
2500 DSPs, so the number of components and intractable fault scenarios involved
make it impossible to design an `expert system' that applies traditional
centralized mitigative strategies based on rules capturing every possible
system state. Instead, a distributed reactive approach is implemented using the
tools and methodologies developed by the Real-Time Embedded Systems group.Comment: 2nd Workshop on Engineering of Autonomic Systems (EASe), in the 12th

Context constraint integration and validation in dynamic web service compositions
System architectures that cross organisational boundaries are usually implemented based on Web service technologies due to their inherent interoperability benets. With increasing exibility requirements, such as on-demand service provision, a dynamic approach to service architecture focussing on composition at runtime is needed. The possibility of technical faults, but also violations of functional and semantic constraints require a comprehensive notion of context that captures composition-relevant aspects. Context-aware techniques are consequently required to support constraint validation for dynamic service composition. We present techniques to respond to problems occurring during the execution of dynamically composed Web
services implemented in WS-BPEL. A notion of context { covering physical and contractual
faults and violations { is used to safeguard composed service executions dynamically. Our aim is to present an architectural framework from an application-oriented perspective, addressing practical considerations of a technical framework
Continuous maintenance and the future ā Foundations and technological challenges
High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ābig dataā analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product. Future of continuous maintenance within the Industry 4.0 context also identifies the role of IoT, standards and cyber security
Automatic Software Repair: a Bibliography
This article presents a survey on automatic software repair. Automatic
software repair consists of automatically finding a solution to software bugs
without human intervention. This article considers all kinds of repairs. First,
it discusses behavioral repair where test suites, contracts, models, and
crashing inputs are taken as oracle. Second, it discusses state repair, also
known as runtime repair or runtime recovery, with techniques such as checkpoint
and restart, reconfiguration, and invariant restoration. The uniqueness of this
article is that it spans the research communities that contribute to this body
of knowledge: software engineering, dependability, operating systems,
programming languages, and security. It provides a novel and structured
overview of the diversity of bug oracles and repair operators used in the
literature
