    Towards adaptive multi-robot systems: self-organization and self-adaptation

The reason for this is that system designers are not able to fully specify the system during specification and development and before it is being deployed. Natural swarm systems enjoy similar characteristics, yet, being self-adaptive and being able to self-organize, these systems show beneficial emergent behaviour. Similar concepts can be extremely helpful for artificial systems, especially when it comes to multi-robot scenarios, which require such solution in order to be applicable to highly uncertain real world application. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview over state-of-the-art solutions in emergent systems, self-organization, self-adaptation, and robotics. We discuss these approaches in the light of a framework for multi-robot systems and identify similarities, differences missing links and open gaps that have to be addressed in order to make this framework possible

    Enabling Cyber Physical Systems with Wireless Sensor Networking Technologies, Multiagent System Paradigm, and Natural Ecosystems

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are key components in the emergent cyber physical systems (CPSs). They may include hundreds of spatially distributed sensors which interact to solve complex tasks going beyond their individual capabilities. Due to the limited capabilities of sensors, sensor actions cannot meet CPS requirements while controlling and coordinating the operations of physical and engineered systems. To overcome these constraints, we explore the ecosystem metaphor for WSNs with the aim of taking advantage of the efficient adaptation behavior and communication mechanisms of living organisms. By mapping these organisms onto sensors and ecosystems onto WSNs, we highlight shortcomings that prevent WSNs from delivering the capabilities of ecosystems at several levels, including structure, topology, goals, communications, and functions. We then propose an agent-based architecture that migrates complex processing tasks outside the physical sensor network while incorporating missing characteristics of autonomy, intelligence, and context awareness to the WSN. Unlike existing works, we use software agents to map WSNs to natural ecosystems and enhance WSN capabilities to take advantage of bioinspired algorithms. We extend our architecture and propose a new intelligent CPS framework where several control levels are embedded in the physical system, thereby allowing agents to support WSNs technologies in enabling CPSs

    Biologically Inspired Self-Healing Software System Architecture

    Self-healing capabilities have begun to emerge as an interesting and potentially valuable property of software systems. Self-healing characteristic enables software systems to continuously and dynamically monitor, diagnose, and adapt itself after a failures has occur in their components. Adding such characteristic into existing software systems is immensely useful and valuable for allowing them to recover from failures. However, developing such self-healing software systems is a significant challenge. The nature introduces to us unforeseen concepts in terms of presenting biological systems that have the ability to handle its abnormal conditions. Based on this observation, this thesis presents self healing architecture for software system based on one of the biological processes that have the ability to heal by itself (the wound-healing process). The self-healing architecture provides software systems the ability to handle anomalous conditions that appear among its components. The presented architecture is divided into to layers, functional and healing layer. In the functional layer, the components of the system provide its services without any disruptions. The component is considered as faulty component if it fails to provide its services. The healing layer aims to heal the faulty component and return it to the running system without the awareness of the user. The presented self-healing software system is formally described to prove its functionality. Set-theoretic and Finite State Machine (FSM) is introduced. A prototype for the presented architecture has been implemented using Java language. Java objects are considered as the system components. The modules of the healing layer in the selfhealing architecture have been implemented into Java classes. An object from the module class will be created to perform its task for the healing process. The thesis concludes with recommendations for future works in this area and enhancement of the presented architecture

    Self-organized Data Ecologies for Pervasive Situation-Aware Services: the Knowledge Networks Approach

    Pervasive computing services exploit information about the physical world both to adapt their own behavior in a context-aware way and to deliver to users enhanced means of interaction with their surrounding environment. The technology to acquire digital information about the physical world is increasingly available, making services at risk of being overwhelmed by such growing amounts of data. This calls for novel approaches to represent and automatically organize, aggregate, and prune such growing amounts of data before delivering it to services. In particular, individual data items should form a sort of self-organized ecology in which, by linking and combining with each other into sorts of “knowledge networks”, they can be able to provide to services compact and easy to be managed higher-level knowledge about situations occurring in the environment. In this context, the contribution of this paper is twofold. First, with the help of a simple case study, we motivate the need to evolve from models of “context-awareness” towards models of “situation-awareness” via proper self-organized “knowledge networks” tools, and introduce a general reference architecture for knowledge networks. Second, we describe the design and implementation of a knowledge network toolkit we have developed, and exemplify algorithms for knowledge self-organization integrated within it.     Modern computing: Vision and challenges

    Over the past six decades, the computing systems field has experienced significant transformations, profoundly impacting society with transformational developments, such as the Internet and the commodification of computing. Underpinned by technological advancements, computer systems, far from being static, have been continuously evolving and adapting to cover multifaceted societal niches. This has led to new paradigms such as cloud, fog, edge computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), which offer fresh economic and creative opportunities. Nevertheless, this rapid change poses complex research challenges, especially in maximizing potential and enhancing functionality. As such, to maintain an economical level of performance that meets ever-tighter requirements, one must understand the drivers of new model emergence and expansion, and how contemporary challenges differ from past ones. To that end, this article investigates and assesses the factors influencing the evolution of computing systems, covering established systems and architectures as well as newer developments, such as serverless computing, quantum computing, and on-device AI on edge devices. Trends emerge when one traces technological trajectory, which includes the rapid obsolescence of frameworks due to business and technical constraints, a move towards specialized systems and models, and varying approaches to centralized and decentralized control. This comprehensive review of modern computing systems looks ahead to the future of research in the field, highlighting key challenges and emerging trends, and underscoring their importance in cost-effectively driving technological progress

    The complexity of information systems is increasing in recent years, leading to increased effort for maintenance and configuration. Self-adaptive systems (SASs) address this issue. Due to new computing trends, such as pervasive computing, miniaturization of IT leads to mobile devices with the emerging need for context adaptation. Therefore, it is beneficial that devices are able to adapt context. Hence, we propose to extend the definition of SASs and include context adaptation. This paper presents a taxonomy of self-adaptation and a survey on engineering SASs. Based on the taxonomy and the survey, we motivate a new perspective on SAS including context adaptation

    Intelligent Robotics Navigation System: Problems, Methods, and Algorithm

    This paper set out to supplement new studies with a brief and comprehensible review of the advanced development in the area of the navigation system, starting from a single robot, multi-robot, and swarm robots from a particular perspective by taking insights from these biological systems. The inspiration is taken from nature by observing the human and the social animal that is believed to be very beneficial for this purpose. The intelligent navigation system is developed based on an individual characteristic or a social animal biological structure. The discussion of this paper will focus on how simple agent’s structure utilizes flexible and potential outcomes in order to navigate in a productive and unorganized surrounding.
