Component-based Segmentation of words from handwritten Arabic text
Efficient preprocessing is very essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this paper, techniques on segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Firstly, connected components (ccs) are extracted, and distances among different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of this distance is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for words segmentation. Meanwhile, an improved projection based method is also employed for baseline detection. The proposed method has been successfully tested on IFN/ENIT database consisting of 26459 Arabic words handwritten by 411 different writers, and the results were promising and very encouraging in more accurate detection of the baseline and segmentation of words for further recognition
A Novel Method to Detect Segmentation points of Arabic Words using Peaks and Neural Network
Many methods of segmentation using detection of segmentation points or where the location of segmentation points is expected before the segmentation process, the validity of segmentation points is verified by using ANNs. In this paper apply a novel method to detect correctly of location segmentation points by detect of peaks with neural networks for Arabic word. This method employs baseline and peaks identification; where using two steps to segmenting text. Where peaks identification function is applied which at the subword segment level to frame the minimum and maximum peaks, and baseline detection. Where these two steps have led to the best result through the model depends on minimum peaks attained by utilising a stroke operator with a view to extracting potential points of segmentation, and determining the baseline procedure was developed to approximate the parameters. Where this method has yielded highly accurate positive results for Arabic characters’ segmentation with four kinds of handwritten datasets as AHDB, IFN-ENIT, AHDB-FTR and ACDAR. Earlier results showed that the use of EDMS to MLP_ANN gives better results than GLCM and MOMENT in different groups and gives results of EDMS features on MNN with an accuracy level of 95.09% classifier for IFN-ENIT set of data
Ensemble learning using multi-objective optimisation for arabic handwritten words
Arabic handwriting recognition is a dynamic and stimulating field of study within
pattern recognition. This system plays quite a significant part in today's global
environment. It is a widespread and computationally costly function due to cursive
writing, a massive number of words, and writing style. Based on the literature, the
existing features lack data supportive techniques and building geometric features.
Most ensemble learning approaches are based on the assumption of linear
combination, which is not valid due to differences in data types. Also, the existing
approaches of classifier generation do not support decision-making for selecting the
most suitable classifier, and it requires enabling multi-objective optimisation to handle
these differences in data types. In this thesis, new type of feature for handwriting using
Segments Interpolation (SI) to find the best fitting line in each of the windows with a
model for finding the best operating point window size for SI features. Multi-Objective
Ensemble Oriented (MOEO) formulated to control the classifier topology and provide
feedback support for changing the classifiers' topology and weights based on the
extension of Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II). It is designated
as the Random Subset based Parents Selection (RSPS-NSGA-II) to handle neurons
and accuracy. Evaluation metrics from two perspectives classification and Multiobjective
optimization. The experimental design based on two subsets of the
IFN/ENIT database. The first one consists of 10 classes (C10) and 22 classes (C22).
The features were tested with Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Extreme Learning
Machine (ELM). This work improved due to the SI feature. SI shows a significant
result with SVM with 88.53% for C22. RSPS for C10 at k=2 achieved 91% accuracy
with fewer neurons than NSGA-II, and for C22 at k=10, accuracy has been increased
81% compared to NSGA-II 78%. Future work may consider introducing more features
to the system, applying them to other languages, and integrating it with sequence
learning for more accuracy

Word based off-line handwritten Arabic classification and recognition. Design of automatic recognition system for large vocabulary offline handwritten Arabic words using machine learning approaches.
The design of a machine which reads unconstrained words still remains an unsolved problem. For example, automatic interpretation of handwritten documents by a computer is still under research. Most systems attempt to segment words into letters and read words one character at a time. However, segmenting handwritten words is very difficult. So to avoid this words are treated as a whole. This research investigates a number of features computed from whole words for the recognition of handwritten words in particular. Arabic text classification and recognition is a complicated process compared to Latin and Chinese text recognition systems. This is due to the nature cursiveness of Arabic text.
The work presented in this thesis is proposed for word based recognition of handwritten Arabic scripts. This work is divided into three main stages to provide a recognition system. The first stage is the pre-processing, which applies efficient pre-processing methods which are essential for automatic recognition of handwritten documents. In this stage, techniques for detecting baseline and segmenting words in handwritten Arabic text are presented. Then connected components are extracted, and distances between different components are analyzed. The statistical distribution of these distances is then obtained to determine an optimal threshold for word segmentation. The second stage is feature extraction. This stage makes use of the normalized images to extract features that are essential in recognizing the images. Various method of feature extraction are implemented and examined. The third and final stage is the classification. Various classifiers are used for classification such as K nearest neighbour classifier (k-NN), neural network classifier (NN), Hidden Markov models (HMMs), and the Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN). To test this concept, the particular pattern recognition problem studied is the classification of 32492 words using

the IFN/ENIT database. The results were promising and very encouraging in terms of improved baseline detection and word segmentation for further recognition. Moreover, several feature subsets were examined and a best recognition performance of 81.5% is achieved
Off-line Arabic Handwriting Recognition System Using Fast Wavelet Transform
In this research, off-line handwriting recognition system for Arabic alphabet is
introduced. The system contains three main stages: preprocessing, segmentation and
recognition stage. In the preprocessing stage, Radon transform was used in the design
of algorithms for page, line and word skew correction as well as for word slant
correction. In the segmentation stage, Hough transform approach was used for line
extraction. For line to words and word to characters segmentation, a statistical method
using mathematic representation of the lines and words binary image was used.
Unlike most of current handwriting recognition system, our system simulates the
human mechanism for image recognition, where images are encoded and saved in
memory as groups according to their similarity to each other. Characters are
decomposed into a coefficient vectors, using fast wavelet transform, then, vectors,
that represent a character in different possible shapes, are saved as groups with one
representative for each group. The recognition is achieved by comparing a vector of
the character to be recognized with group representatives.
Experiments showed that the proposed system is able to achieve the recognition task
with 90.26% of accuracy. The system needs only 3.41 seconds a most to recognize a
single character in a text of 15 lines where each line has 10 words on average
An intelligent framework for pre-processing ancient Thai manuscripts on palm leaves
In Thailand’s early history, prior to the availability of paper and printing technologies, palm leaves were used to record information written by hand. These ancient documents contain invaluable knowledge. By digitising the manuscripts, the content can be preserved and made widely available to the interested community via electronic media. However, the content is difficult to access or retrieve. In order to extract relevant information from the document images efficiently, each step of the process requires reduction of irrelevant data such as noise or interference on the images. The pre-processing techniques serve the purpose of extracting regions of interest, reducing noise from the image and degrading the irrelevant background. The image can then be directly and efficiently processed for feature selection and extraction prior to the subsequent phase of character recognition. It is therefore the main objective of this study to develop an efficient and intelligent image preprocessing system that could be used to extract components from ancient manuscripts for information extraction and retrieval purposes.
The main contributions of this thesis are the provision and enhancement of the region of interest by using an intelligent approach for the pre-processing of ancient Thai manuscripts on palm leaves and a detailed examination of the preprocessing techniques for palm leaf manuscripts. As noise reduction and binarisation are involved in the first step of pre-processing to eliminate noise and background from image documents, it is necessary for this step to provide a good quality output; otherwise, the accuracy of the subsequent stages will be affected. In this work, an intelligent approach to eliminate background was proposed and carried out by a selection of appropriate binarisation techniques using SVM. As there could be multiple binarisation techniques of choice, another approach was proposed to eliminate the background in this study in order to generate an optimal binarised image. The proposal is an ensemble architecture based on the majority vote scheme utilising local neighbouring information around a pixel of interest. To extract text from that binarised image, line segmentation was then applied based on the partial projection method as this method provides good results with slant texts and connected components. To improve the quality of the partial projection method, an Adaptive Partial Projection (APP) method was proposed. This technique adjusts the size of a character strip automatically by adapting the width of the strip to separate the connected component of consecutive lines through divide and conquer, and analysing the upper vowels and lower vowels of the text line. Finally, character segmentation was proposed using a hierarchical segmentation technique based on a contour-tracing algorithm. Touching components identified from the previous step were then separated by a trace of the background skeletons, and a combined method of segmentation.
The key datasets used in this study are images provided by the Project for Palm Leaf Preservation, Northeastern Thailand Division, and benchmark datasets from the Document Image Binarisation Contest (DIBCO) series are used to compare the results of this work against other binarisation techniques. The experimental results have shown that the proposed methods in this study provide superior performance and will be used to support subsequent processing of the Thai ancient palm leaf documents. It is expected that the contributions from this study will also benefit research work on ancient manuscripts in other languages

Arabic text recognition of printed manuscripts. Efficient recognition of off-line printed Arabic text using Hidden Markov Models, Bigram Statistical Language Model, and post-processing.
Arabic text recognition was not researched as thoroughly as other natural languages. The need for automatic Arabic text recognition is clear. In addition to the traditional applications like postal address reading, check verification in banks, and office automation, there is a large interest in searching scanned documents that are available on the internet and for searching handwritten manuscripts. Other possible applications are building digital libraries, recognizing text on digitized maps, recognizing vehicle license plates, using it as first phase in text readers for visually impaired people and understanding filled forms.
This research work aims to contribute to the current research in the field of optical character recognition (OCR) of printed Arabic text by developing novel techniques and schemes to advance the performance of the state of the art Arabic OCR systems.
Statistical and analytical analysis for Arabic Text was carried out to estimate the probabilities of occurrences of Arabic character for use with Hidden Markov models (HMM) and other techniques.
Since there is no publicly available dataset for printed Arabic text for recognition purposes it was decided to create one. In addition, a minimal Arabic script is proposed. The proposed script contains all basic shapes of Arabic letters. The script provides efficient representation for Arabic text in terms of effort and time.
Based on the success of using HMM for speech and text recognition, the use of HMM for the automatic recognition of Arabic text was investigated. The HMM technique adapts to noise and font variations and does not require word or character segmentation of Arabic line images.
In the feature extraction phase, experiments were conducted with a number of different features to investigate their suitability for HMM. Finally, a novel set of features, which resulted in high recognition rates for different fonts, was selected.
The developed techniques do not need word or character segmentation before the classification phase as segmentation is a byproduct of recognition. This seems to be the most advantageous feature of using HMM for Arabic text as segmentation tends to produce errors which are usually propagated to the classification phase.
Eight different Arabic fonts were used in the classification phase. The recognition rates were in the range from 98% to 99.9% depending on the used fonts. As far as we know, these are new results in their context. Moreover, the proposed technique could be used for other languages. A proof-of-concept experiment was conducted on English characters with a recognition rate of 98.9% using the same HMM setup. The same techniques where conducted on Bangla characters with a recognition rate above 95%.
Moreover, the recognition of printed Arabic text with multi-fonts was also conducted using the same technique. Fonts were categorized into different groups. New high recognition results were achieved.
To enhance the recognition rate further, a post-processing module was developed to correct the OCR output through character level post-processing and word level post-processing. The use of this module increased the accuracy of the recognition rate by more than 1%.King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM
