An Overview of Security Challenges in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks

© 2017 IEEE. Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) is emerging as a promising technology of the Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) due to its potential benefits for travel planning, notifying road hazards, cautioning of emergency scenarios, alleviating congestion, provisioning parking facilities and environmental predicaments. But, the security threats hinder its wide deployment and acceptability by users. This paper gives an overview of the security threats at the various layers of the VANET communication stack and discuss some of the existing solutions, thus concluding why designing a security framework for VANET needs to consider these threats for overcoming security challenges in VANET

MIMO Techniques for Jamming Threat Suppression in Vehicular Networks

Vehicular ad hoc networks have emerged as a promising field of research and development, since they will be able to accommodate a variety of applications, ranging from infotainment to traffic management and road safety. A specific security-related concern that vehicular ad hoc networks face is how to keep communication alive in the presence of radio frequency jamming, especially during emergency situations. Multiple Input Multiple Output techniques are proven to be able to improve some crucial parameters of vehicular communications such as communication range and throughput. In this article, we investigate how Multiple Input Multiple Output techniques can be used in vehicular ad hoc networks as active defense mechanisms in order to avoid jamming threats. For this reason, a variation of spatial multiplexing is proposed, namely, vSP4, which achieves not only high throughput but also a stable diversity gain upon the interference of a malicious jammer

Security of self-organizing networks: MANET, WSN, WMN, VANET

Reflecting cutting-edge advancements, Security of Self-Organizing Networks: MANET, WSN, WMN, VANET explores wireless network security from all angles. It begins with a review of fundamental security topics and often-used terms to set the foundation for the following chapters. Examining critical security issues in a range of wireless networks, the book proposes specific solutions to security threats. Ideal for those with a basic understanding of network security, the text provides a clear examination of the key aspects of security in self-organizing networks and other networks that use wireless technology for communications. The book is organized into four sections for ease of reference: -General Topics—Security of Wireless and Self-Organizing Networks -Mobile Ad-Hoc Network and Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network Security -Wireless Sensor Network Security -Wireless Mesh Network Security Highlighting potential threats to network security, most chapters are written in a tutorial manner. However, some of the chapters include mathematical equations and detailed analysis for advanced readers. Guiding you through the latest trends, issues, and advances in network security, the text includes questions and sample answers in each chapter to reinforce understanding

A Systematic Approach for Cyber Security in Vehicular Networks

Vehicular Networks (VANET) are the largest real-life paradigm of ad hoc networks which aim to ensure road safety and enhance drivers’ comfort. In VANET, the vehicles communicate or collaborate with each other and with adjacent infrastructure by exchanging significant messages, such as road accident warnings, steep-curve ahead warnings or traffic jam warnings. However, this communication and other assets involved are subject to major threats and provide numerous opportunities for attackers to launch several attacks and compromise security and privacy of vehicular users. This paper reviews the cyber security in VANET and proposes an asset-based approach for VANET security. Firstly, it identifies relevant assets in VANET. Secondly, it provides a detailed taxonomy of vulnerabilities and threats on these assets, and, lastly, it classifies the possible attacks in VANET and critically evaluates them
