    Establishing and optimising unmanned airborne relay networks in urban environments

    This thesis assesses the use of a group of small, low-altitude, low-power (in terms of communication equipment), xed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a mobile communication relay nodes to facilitate reliable communication between ground nodes in urban environments. This work focuses on enhancing existing models for optimal trajectory planning and enabling UAV relay implementation in realistic urban scenarios. The performance of the proposed UAV relay algorithms was demonstrated and proved through an indoor simulated urban environment, the rst experiment of its kind.The objective of enabling UAV relay deployment in realistic urban environments is addressed through relaxing the constraints on the assumptions of communication prediction models assumptions, reducing knowledge requirements and improving prediction efficiency. This thesis explores assumptions for urban environment knowledge at three different levels: (i) full knowledge about the urban environment, (ii) partially known urban environments, and (iii) no knowledge about the urban environment.     Analysing the police patrol routing problem : a review

    Police patrol is a complex process. While on patrol, police officers must balance many intersecting responsibilities. Most notably, police must proactively patrol and prevent offenders from committing crimes but must also reactively respond to real-time incidents. Efficient patrol strategies are crucial to manage scarce police resources and minimize emergency response times. The objective of this review paper is to discuss solution methods that can be used to solve the so-called police patrol routing problem (PPRP). The starting point of the review is the existing literature on the dynamic vehicle routing problem (DVRP). A keyword search resulted in 30 articles that focus on the DVRP with a link to police. Although the articles refer to policing, there is no specific focus on the PPRP; hence, there is a knowledge gap. A diversity of approaches is put forward ranging from more convenient solution methods such as a (hybrid) Genetic Algorithm (GA), linear programming and routing policies, to more complex Markov Decision Processes and Online Stochastic Combinatorial Optimization. Given the objectives, characteristics, advantages and limitations, the (hybrid) GA, routing policies and local search seem the most valuable solution methods for solving the PPRP

    A systematic review of machine learning techniques related to local energy communities

    In recent years, digitalisation has rendered machine learning a key tool for improving processes in several sectors, as in the case of electrical power systems. Machine learning algorithms are data-driven models based on statistical learning theory and employed as a tool to exploit the data generated by the power system and its users. Energy communities are emerging as novel organisations for consumers and prosumers in the distribution grid. These communities may operate differently depending on their objectives and the potential service the community wants to offer to the distribution system operator. This paper presents the conceptualisation of a local energy community on the basis of a review of 25 energy community projects. Furthermore, an extensive literature review of machine learning algorithms for local energy community applications was conducted, and these algorithms were categorised according to forecasting, storage optimisation, energy management systems, power stability and quality, security, and energy transactions. The main algorithms reported in the literature were analysed and classified as supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning algorithms. The findings demonstrate the manner in which supervised learning can provide accurate models for forecasting tasks.     Multi-Criteria Decision Making in Complex Decision Environments

    In the future, many decisions will either be fully automated or supported by autonomous system. Consequently, it is of high importance that we understand how to integrate human preferences correctly. This dissertation dives into the research field of multi-criteria decision making and investigates the satellite image acquisition scheduling problem and the unmanned aerial vehicle routing problem to further the research on a priori preference integration frameworks. The work will aid in the transition towards autonomous decision making in complex decision environments. A discussion on the future of pairwise and setwise preference articulation methods is also undertaken. "Simply put, a direct consequence of the improved decision-making methods is,that bad decisions more clearly will stand out as what they are - bad decisions.

    Decision tree aided planning and energy balancing of planned community microgrids

    Planned Communities (PCs) present a unique opportunity for deployment of intelligent control of demand-side distributed energy resources (DER) and storage, which may be organized in Microgrids (MGs). MGs require balancing for maintaining safe and resilient operation. This paper discusses the implications of using MG concepts for planning and control of energy systems within PCs. A novel tool is presented, based on decision trees (DTs), with two potential applications: (i) planning of energy storage systems within such MGs and (ii) controlling energy resources for energy balancing within a PC MG. The energy storage planning and energy balancing methodology is validated through sensitivity case studies, demonstrating its effectiveness. A test implementation is presented, utilizing distributed controller hardware to execute the energy balancing algorithm in real-time
