A decision support system for strategic maintenance planning in offshore wind farms
This paper presents a Decision Support System (DSS) for maintenance cost optimisation at an Offshore Wind Farm (OWF). The DSS is designed for use by multiple stakeholders in the OWF sector with the overall goal of informing maintenance strategy and hence reducing overall lifecycle maintenance costs at the OWF. Two optimisation models underpin the DSS. The first is a deterministic model that is intended for use by stakeholders with access to accurate failure rate data. The second is a stochastic model that is intended for use by stakeholders who have less certainty about failure rates. Solutions of both models are presented using a UK OWF that is in construction as an example. Conclusions as to the value of failure rate data are drawn by comparing the results of the two models. Sensitivity analysis is undertaken with respect to the turbine failure rate frequency and number of turbines at the site, with near linear trends observed for both factors. Finally, overall conclusions are drawn in the context of maintenance planning in the OWF sector

A reliability-and-cost-based fuzzy approach to optimize preventive maintenance scheduling for offshore wind farms
We study the preventive maintenance scheduling problem of wind farms in the offshore wind energy sector which operates under uncertainty due to the state of the ocean and market demand. We formulate a fuzzy multi-objective non-linear chance-constrained programming model with newly-defined reliability and cost criteria and constraints to obtain satisfying schedules for wind turbine maintenance. To solve the optimization model, a 2-phase solution framework integrating the operational law for fuzzy arithmetic and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II for multi-objective programming is developed. Pareto-optimal solutions of the schedules are obtained to form the trade-offs between the reliability maximization and cost minimization objectives. A numerical example is illustrated to validate the model
A cost optimisation model for maintenance planning in offshore wind farms with wind speed dependent failure rates
This paper presents an optimisation model for cost optimisation of maintenance at an Offshore Wind Farm (OWF). The model is created for OWF project developers to optimise strategically resources to meet their maintenance demand. The model takes into account various maintenance categories on a full range of wind turbine components; the failure rate associated with each component is dependent on wind speed in order to consider weather uncertainty. Weibull distribution is used to predict the probability of wind speed occurring during a given period based on available historical data. The performance of the proposed optimisation model has been validated using reference cases and an UK OWF in operation. Various optimal solutions are investigated for the problems with increased and decreased mean turbine failure rates, as a sensitivity test of the model

A review of asset management literature on multi-asset systems
This article gives an overview of the literature on asset management for multi-unit systems with an emphasis on two multi-asset categories: fleet (a system of homogeneous assets) and portfolio (a system of heterogeneous assets). As asset systems become more complicated, researchers have employed different terms to refer to their specific problems. With an
objective to facilitate readers in searching conducive studies to their interests, this paper establishes a novel classification scheme for multi-unit systems in accordance with essential features such as diversity of assets and intervention options. Moreover, discerning differences in characteristics between cross-component and cross-asset interactions, we select three types of potential multi-component dependencies (performance, stochastic, and resource) and extend their notions to be applicable to multi-asset systems. The investigation into these dependencies enables the identification of problems that could exist in real industrial settings
but are yet to be determined in academia. Ultimately, we delve into modelling approaches adopted by previous researchers. This comprehensive information allows us to offer the insights into the current trends in multi-asset maintenance. We expect that the output of this review paper will not only stress research gaps on multi-asset systems, but more importantly
help systematise future studies on this aspect

Constrained non-linear multi-objective optimisation of preventive maintenance scheduling for offshore wind farms
Offshore wind farm is an emerging source of renewable energy, which has been shown to have tremendous potential in recent years. In this blooming area, a key challenge is that the preventive maintenance of offshore turbines should be scheduled reasonably to satisfy the power supply without failure. In this direction, two significant goals should be considered simultaneously as a trade-off. One is to maximise the system reliability and the other is to minimise the maintenance related cost. Thus, a non-linear multi-objective programming model is proposed including two newly defined objectives with thirteen families of constraints suitable for the preventive maintenance of offshore wind farms. In order to solve our model effectively, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II, especially for the multi-objective optimisation is utilised and Pareto-optimal solutions of schedules can be obtained to offer adequate support to decision-makers. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the performances of the devised model and algorithm, and explore the relationships of the two targets with the help of a contrast model.... the gracious supports of the EPSRC and ESRC Centre for Doctoral Training on Quantification and Management of Risk and Uncertainty in Complex Systems and Environment (EP/L015927/1), the Recruitment
