    PSCoP: planning scheduler coprocessor

    The use of a centralised planning scheduler in fieldbus- based systems requiring real-time operation has proved to be a good compromise between operational flexibility and timeliness guarantees. In this paper a preliminary implementation of a hardware scheduling coprocessor based in the planning paradigm is presented. The coprocessor is installed in a special node of the fieldbus, the bus arbiter, and generates scheduling tables to be dispatched by the node CPU. With this solution it is possible to decrease the response time to changes in the system configuration or message parameters of the software-based planning scheduler. This opens the possibility of allowing automatic on-line changes requested by system nodes in addition to the ones requested by human operators, thus improving system reactivity. In this paper the focus is on the coprocessor’s interface with the node CPU and its overall functionality. Initial calculations showing the feasibility of the unit and its expected performance are also derived

    A hardware scheduler based on task queues for FPGA-based embedded real-time systems

    A hardware scheduler is developed to improve real-time performance of soft-core processor based computing systems. A hardware scheduler typically accelerates system performance at the cost of increased hardware resources, inflexibility and integration difficulty. However, the reprogrammability of FPGA-based systems removes the problems of inflexibility and integration difficulty. This paper introduces a new task-queue architecture to better support practical task controls and maintain good resource scaling. The scheduler can be configured to support various algorithms such as time sliced priority scheduling, Earliest Deadline First and Least Slack Time. The hardware scheduler reduces scheduling overhead by more than 1,000 clock cycles and raises the system utilization bound by a maximum 19.2 percent. Scheduling jitter is reduced from hundreds of clock cycles in software to just two or three cycles for most operations. The additional resource cost is no more than 17 percent of a typical softcore system for a small scale embedded application

Recent techniques such as the planning scheduler can avoid this problem but do not show adequate responsiveness f o r automatic negotiation of parameter values. In this paper the use of ASIC based coprocessors f o r message scheduling is proposed to solve the problem. Such coprocessors can be used in the arbiter nodes of systems based on widely used producer-consumer fieldbuses like WorldFIP and CAN. A prototype built with a Xilinx FPGA is presented. First performance results are shown and analyzed. They demonstrate that the device is able to achieve the expected performance and also point to the possibility of evolution to an almost dynamic scheduling approach

    Flexible time-triggered protocol for CAN: new scheduling and dispatching solutions

    One of the possibilities to build robust communication systems with respect to their temporal behaviour is to use autonomous control based on the time-triggered paradigm. The FTT-CAN - flexible time-triggered protocol, relies on centralised scheduling but makes use of the CAN native distributed arbitration to reduce communication overhead. There, a planning scheduler is used within a master node to reduce the scheduling run-time overhead. On-line changes to the communication requirements can then be made under guaranteed timeliness. In addition FTT-CAN also allows an efficient combination of both time-triggered and event- triggered traffic with temporal isolation. In this paper, recent evolutions of the initial protocol definition concerning transmission of synchronous and asynchronous messages are presented. These consist in a time division of the elementary transmission window which optimises the available bandwidth for asynchronous messages, keeping the timeliness of synchronous messages without jeopardising their transmission jitter. A novel solution for the planning scheduler is also presented. It consists in an FPGA-based coprocessor which implements the planning scheduler technique without imposing overhead to the arbiter CPU. With it, it is possible to reduce strongly the plan duration thus allowing on-line admission demanded by system elements and, also, to extend the protocol application to high-speed networks

    A Real-time Calculus Approach for Integrating Sporadic Events in Time-triggered Systems

    In time-triggered systems, where the schedule table is predefined and statically configured at design time, sporadic event-triggered (ET) tasks can only be handled within specially dedicated slots or when time-triggered (TT) tasks finish their execution early. We introduce a new paradigm for synthesizing TT schedules that guarantee the correct temporal behavior of TT tasks and the schedulability of sporadic ET tasks with arbitrary deadlines. The approach first expresses a constraint for the TT task schedule in the form of a maximal affine envelope that guarantees that as long as the schedule generation respects this envelope, all sporadic ET tasks meet their deadline. The second step consists of modeling this envelope as a burst limiting constraint and building the TT schedule via simulating a modified Least-Laxity-First (LLF) scheduler. Using this novel technique, we show that we achieve equal or better schedulability and a faster schedule generation for most use-cases compared to other approaches inspired by, e.g., hierarchical scheduling. Moreover, we present an extension to our method that finds the most favourable schedule for TT tasks with respect to ET schedulability, thus increasing the probability of the computed TT schedule remaining feasible when ET tasks are later added or changed

    Software development of reconfigurable real-time systems : from specification to implementation

    This thesis deals with reconfigurable real-time systems solving real-time tasks scheduling problems in a mono-core and multi-core architectures. The main focus in this thesis is on providing guidelines, methods, and tools for the synthesis of feasible reconfigurable real-time systems in a mono-processor and multi-processor architectures. The development of these systems faces various challenges particularly in terms of stability, energy consumption, response and blocking time. To address this problem, we propose in this work a new strategy of i) placement and scheduling of tasks to execute real-time applications on mono-core and multi-core architectures, ii) optimization step based on Mixed integer linear programming (MILP), and iii) guidance tool that assists designers to implement a feasible multi-core reconfigurable real-time from specification level to implementation level. We apply and simulate the contribution to a case study, and compare the proposed results with related works in order to show the originality of this methodology.Echtzeitsysteme laufen unter harten Bedingungen an ihre Ausführungszeit. Die Einhaltung der Echtzeit-Bedingungen bestimmt die Zuverlässigkeit und Genauigkeit dieser Systeme. Neben den Echtzeit-Bedingungen müssen rekonfigurierbare Echtzeitsysteme zusätzliche Rekonfigurations-Bedingungen erfüllen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit rekonfigurierbaren Echtzeitsystemen in Mono- und Multicore-Architekturen. An die Entwicklung dieser Systeme sind verschiedene Anforderungen gestellt. Insbesondere muss die Rekonfigurierbarkeit beachtet werden. Dabei sind aber Echtzeit-Bedingungen und Ressourcenbeschränkungen weiterhin zu beachten. Darüber hinaus werden die Kosten für die Entwicklung dieser Systeme insbesondere durch falsche Designentscheidungen in den frühen Phasen der Entwicklung stark beeinträchtigt. Das Hauptziel in dieser Arbeit liegt deshalb auf der Bereitstellung von Handlungsempfehlungen, Methoden und Werkzeugen für die zielgerichtete Entwicklung von realisierbaren rekonfigurierbaren Echtzeitsystemen in Mono- und Multicore-Architekturen. Um diese Herausforderungen zu adressieren wird eine neue Strategie vorgeschlagen, die 1) die Funktionsallokation, 2) die Platzierung und das Scheduling von Tasks, 3) einen Optimierungsschritt auf der Basis von Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) und 4) eine entscheidungsunterstützende Lösung umfasst, die den Designern hilft, eine realisierbare rekonfigurierbare Echtzeitlösung von der Spezifikationsebene bis zur Implementierungsebene zu entwickeln.     Online scheduling for real-time multitasking on reconfigurable hardware devices

    Nowadays the ever increasing algorithmic complexity of embedded applications requires the designers to turn towards heterogeneous and highly integrated systems denoted as SoC (System-on-a-Chip). These architectures may embed CPU-based processors, dedicated datapaths as well as recon gurable units. However, embedded SoCs are submitted to stringent requirements in terms of speed, size, cost, power consumption, throughput, etc. Therefore, new computing paradigms are required to ful l the constraints of the applications and the requirements of the architecture. Recon gurable Computing is a promising paradigm that provides probably the best trade-o between these requirements and constraints. Dynamically recon gurable architectures are their key enabling technology. They enable the hardware to adapt to the application at runtime. However, these architectures raise new challenges in SoC design. For example, on one hand, designing a system that takes advantage of dynamic recon guration is still very time consuming because of the lack of design methodologies and tools. On the other hand, scheduling hardware tasks di ers from classical software tasks scheduling on microprocessor or multiprocessors systems, as it bears a further complicated placement problem. This thesis deals with the problem of scheduling online real-time hardware tasks on Dynamically Recon gurable Hardware Devices (DRHWs). The problem is addressed from two angles : (i) Investigating novel algorithms for online real-time scheduling/placement on DRHWs. (ii) Scheduling/Placement algorithms library for RTOS-driven Design Space Exploration (DSE). Regarding the first point, the thesis proposes two main runtime-aware scheduling and placement techniques and assesses their suitability for online real-time scenarios. The first technique discusses the impact of synthesizing, at design time, several shapes and/or sizes per hardware task (denoted as multi-shape task), in order to ease the online scheduling process. The second technique combines a looking-ahead scheduling approach with a slots-based recon gurable areas management that relies on a 1D placement. The results show that in both techniques, the scheduling and placement quality is improved without signi cantly increasing the algorithm time complexity. Regarding the second point, in the process of designing SoCs embedding recon gurable parts, new design paradigms tend to explore and validate as early as possible, at system level, the architectural design space. Therefore, the RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) services that manage the recon gurable parts of the SoC can be re fined. In such a context, gathering numerous hardware tasks scheduling and placement algorithms of various complexity vs performance trade-o s in a kind of library is required.     Fault Tolerant Real Time Dynamic Scheduling Algorithm For Heterogeneous Distributed System

    Fault-tolerance becomes an important key to establish dependability in Real Time Distributed Systems (RTDS). In fault-tolerant Real Time Distributed systems, detection of fault and its recovery should be executed in timely manner so that in spite of fault occurrences the intended output of real-time computations always take place on time. Hardware and software redundancy are well-known e ective methods for faulttolerance, where extra hard ware (e.g., processors, communication links) and software (e.g., tasks, messages) are added into the system to deal with faults.
