    Producing approximate answers to database queries

    We have designed and implemented a query processor, called APPROXIMATE, that makes approximate answers available if part of the database is unavailable or if there is not enough time to produce an exact answer. The accuracy of the approximate answers produced improves monotonically with the amount of data retrieved to produce the result. The exact answer is produced if all of the needed data are available and query processing is allowed to continue until completion. The monotone query processing algorithm of APPROXIMATE works within the standard relational algebra framework and can be implemented on a relational database system with little change to the relational architecture. We describe here the approximation semantics of APPROXIMATE that serves as the basis for meaningful approximations of both set-valued and single-valued queries. We show how APPROXIMATE is implemented to make effective use of semantic information, provided by an object-oriented view of the database, and describe the additional overhead required by APPROXIMATE

    Statistic Rate Monotonic Scheduling

    In this paper we present Statistical Rate Monotonic Scheduling (SRMS), a generalization of the classical RMS results of Liu and Layland that allows scheduling periodic tasks with highly variable execution times and statistical QoS requirements. Similar to RMS, SRMS has two components: a feasibility test and a scheduling algorithm. The feasibility test for SRMS ensures that using SRMS' scheduling algorithms, it is possible for a given periodic task set to share a given resource (e.g. a processor, communication medium, switching device, etc.) in such a way that such sharing does not result in the violation of any of the periodic tasks QoS constraints. The SRMS scheduling algorithm incorporates a number of unique features. First, it allows for fixed priority scheduling that keeps the tasks' value (or importance) independent of their periods. Second, it allows for job admission control, which allows the rejection of jobs that are not guaranteed to finish by their deadlines as soon as they are released, thus enabling the system to take necessary compensating actions. Also, admission control allows the preservation of resources since no time is spent on jobs that will miss their deadlines anyway. Third, SRMS integrates reservation-based and best-effort resource scheduling seamlessly. Reservation-based scheduling ensures the delivery of the minimal requested QoS; best-effort scheduling ensures that unused, reserved bandwidth is not wasted, but rather used to improve QoS further. Fourth, SRMS allows a system to deal gracefully with overload conditions by ensuring a fair deterioration in QoS across all tasks---as opposed to penalizing tasks with longer periods, for example. Finally, SRMS has the added advantage that its schedulability test is simple and its scheduling algorithm has a constant overhead in the sense that the complexity of the scheduler is not dependent on the number of the tasks in the system. We have evaluated SRMS against a number of alternative scheduling algorithms suggested in the literature (e.g. RMS and slack stealing), as well as refinements thereof, which we describe in this paper. Consistently throughout our experiments, SRMS provided the best performance.     Quality estimation and optimization of adaptive stereo matching algorithms for smart vehicles

    Stereo matching is a promising approach for smart vehicles to find the depth of nearby objects. Transforming a traditional stereo matching algorithm to its adaptive version has potential advantages to achieve the maximum quality (depth accuracy) in a best-effort manner. However, it is very challenging to support this adaptive feature, since (1) the internal mechanism of adaptive stereo matching (ASM) has to be accurately modeled, and (2) scheduling ASM tasks on multiprocessors to generate the maximum quality is difficult under strict real-time constraints of smart vehicles. In this article, we propose a framework for constructing an ASM application and optimizing its output quality on smart vehicles. First, we empirically convert stereo matching into ASM by exploiting its inherent characteristics of disparity–cycle correspondence and introduce an exponential quality model that accurately represents the quality–cycle relationship. Second, with the explicit quality model, we propose an efficient quadratic programming-based dynamic voltage/frequency scaling (DVFS) algorithm to decide the optimal operating strategy, which maximizes the output quality under timing, energy, and temperature constraints. Third, we propose two novel methods to efficiently estimate the parameters of the quality model, namely location similarity-based feature point thresholding and street scenario-confined CNN prediction. Results show that our DVFS algorithm achieves at least 1.61 times quality improvement compared to the state-of-the-art techniques, and average parameter estimation for the quality model achieves 96.35% accuracy on the straight road

    A linguistic geometry for 3D strategic planning

    This paper is a new step in the development and application of the Linguistic Geometry. This formal theory is intended to discover the inner properties of human expert heuristics, which have been successful in a certain class of complex control systems, and apply them to different systems. In this paper we investigate heuristics extracted in the form of hierarchical networks of planning paths of autonomous agents. Employing Linguistic Geometry tools the dynamic hierarchy of networks is represented as a hierarchy of formal attribute languages. The main ideas of this methodology are shown in this paper on the new pilot example of the solution of the extremely complex 3D optimization problem of strategic planning for the space combat of autonomous vehicles. This example demonstrates deep and highly selective search in comparison with conventional search algorithms

    Scheduling Techniques for Operating Systems for Medical and IoT Devices: A Review

    Software and Hardware synthesis are the major subtasks in the implementation of hardware/software systems. Increasing trend is to build SoCs/NoC/Embedded System for Implantable Medical Devices (IMD) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which includes multiple Microprocessors and Signal Processors, allowing designing complex hardware and software systems, yet flexible with respect to the delivered performance and executed application. An important technique, which affect the macroscopic system implementation characteristics is the scheduling of hardware operations, program instructions and software processes. This paper presents a survey of the various scheduling strategies in process scheduling. Process Scheduling has to take into account the real-time constraints. Processes are characterized by their timing constraints, periodicity, precedence and data dependency, pre-emptivity, priority etc. The affect of these characteristics on scheduling decisions has been described in this paper

    Scheduling Periodic Real-Time Tasks with Heterogeneous Reward Requirements

    Abstract—We study the problem of scheduling periodic real-time tasks which have individual minimum reward requirements. We consider situations where tasks generate jobs that can be provided arbitrary service times before their deadlines, and obtain rewards based on the service times received by the jobs of the task. We show that this model is compatible with the imprecise computation models and the increasing reward with increasing service models. In contrast to previous work on these models, which mainly focus on maximizing the total reward in the system, we additionally aim to fulfill different reward requirements of different tasks. This provides better fairness and also allows fine-grained tradeoff between tasks. We first derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a system with reward requirements of tasks to be feasible. We next obtain an off-line feasibility optimal scheduling policy. We then study a sufficient condition for a policy to be feasibility optimal or achieve some approximation bound. This condition serves as a guideline for designing on-line scheduling policy and we obtain a greedy policy based on it. We prove that the on-line policy is feasibility optimal when all tasks have the same periods, and also obtain an approximation bound for the policy under general cases. We test our policies through comparative simulations. I
