    Serving Graph Neural Networks With Distributed Fog Servers For Smart IoT Services

    Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have gained growing interest in miscellaneous applications owing to their outstanding ability in extracting latent representation on graph structures. To render GNN-based service for IoT-driven smart applications, traditional model serving paradigms usually resort to the cloud by fully uploading geo-distributed input data to remote datacenters. However, our empirical measurements reveal the significant communication overhead of such cloud-based serving and highlight the profound potential in applying the emerging fog computing. To maximize the architectural benefits brought by fog computing, in this paper, we present Fograph, a novel distributed real-time GNN inference framework that leverages diverse and dynamic resources of multiple fog nodes in proximity to IoT data sources. By introducing heterogeneity-aware execution planning and GNN-specific compression techniques, Fograph tailors its design to well accommodate the unique characteristics of GNN serving in fog environments. Prototype-based evaluation and case study demonstrate that Fograph significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art cloud serving and fog deployment by up to 5.39x execution speedup and 6.84x throughput improvement.Comment: Accepted by IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networkin

    Towards Visual Localization, Mapping and Moving Objects Tracking by a Mobile Robot: a Geometric and Probabilistic Approach

    Dans cette thèse, nous résolvons le problème de reconstruire simultanément une représentation de la géométrie du monde, de la trajectoire de l'observateur, et de la trajectoire des objets mobiles, à l'aide de la vision. Nous divisons le problème en trois étapes : D'abord, nous donnons une solution au problème de la cartographie et localisation simultanées pour la vision monoculaire qui fonctionne dans les situations les moins bien conditionnées géométriquement. Ensuite, nous incorporons l'observabilité 3D instantanée en dupliquant le matériel de vision avec traitement monoculaire. Ceci élimine les inconvénients inhérents aux systèmes stéréo classiques. Nous ajoutons enfin la détection et suivi des objets mobiles proches en nous servant de cette observabilité 3D. Nous choisissons une représentation éparse et ponctuelle du monde et ses objets. La charge calculatoire des algorithmes de perception est allégée en focalisant activement l'attention aux régions de l'image avec plus d'intérêt. ABSTRACT : In this thesis we give new means for a machine to understand complex and dynamic visual scenes in real time. In particular, we solve the problem of simultaneously reconstructing a certain representation of the world's geometry, the observer's trajectory, and the moving objects' structures and trajectories, with the aid of vision exteroceptive sensors. We proceeded by dividing the problem into three main steps: First, we give a solution to the Simultaneous Localization And Mapping problem (SLAM) for monocular vision that is able to adequately perform in the most ill-conditioned situations: those where the observer approaches the scene in straight line. Second, we incorporate full 3D instantaneous observability by duplicating vision hardware with monocular algorithms. This permits us to avoid some of the inherent drawbacks of classic stereo systems, notably their limited range of 3D observability and the necessity of frequent mechanical calibration. Third, we add detection and tracking of moving objects by making use of this full 3D observability, whose necessity we judge almost inevitable. We choose a sparse, punctual representation of both the world and the moving objects in order to alleviate the computational payload of the image processing algorithms, which are required to extract the necessary geometrical information out of the images. This alleviation is additionally supported by active feature detection and search mechanisms which focus the attention to those image regions with the highest interest. This focusing is achieved by an extensive exploitation of the current knowledge available on the system (all the mapped information), something that we finally highlight to be the ultimate key to success

    The continuous growth in the Internet's size, the amount of data traffic, and the complexity of processing this traffic gives rise to new challenges in building high performance network devices. Such an exponential growth coupledwith the increasing sophistication of attacks, is placing stringent demands on the performance of networked systems (Firewalls). These challengesrequire new designs, architecture and algorithms for the optimization of such systems.The current or classical security of present day Internet is "static" and "oblivious" to traffic dynamics in the network. Hence, there are tremendous efforts towards the design and development of several techniques and strategies to deal with the above shortcomings. Unfortunately, the current solutions have been successful in addressing only some aspects ofsecurity. However, as a whole security remains a major issue. This is primarily due to the lack of adaptation and dynamics in the design of such intrusion detection and mitigation systems.This thesis focuses on the design of architectures and algorithms for theoptimization of such networked systems, to aid not only adaptive and real-time "packet filtering' but also fast "content basedrouting (differentiated services)' in today's data-driven networks.The approach proposed involves a unique combination of algorithmic andarchitectural techniques that aims to outperform all current solutions in termsof adaptiveness, speed of operation (under attack or heavily loaded conditions) andoverall operational cost-effectiveness of such systems. The tools proposed in thisthesis also aim to offer the flexibility to include new approaches, and providethe ability to migrate or deploy additional entities for attack detection and defense

    Design and Implementation of a Scalable Crowdsensing Platform for Geospatial Data

    In the recent years smart devices and small low-powered sensors are becoming ubiquitous and nowadays everything is connected altogether, which is a promising foundation for crowdsensing of data related to various environmental and societal phenomena. Very often, such data is especially meaningful when related to time and location, which is possible by already equipped GPS capabilities of modern smart devices. However, in order to gain knowledge from high-volume crowd-sensed data, it has to be collected and stored in a central platform, where it can be processed and transformed for various use cases. Conventional approaches built around classical relational databases and monolithic backends, that load and process the geospatial data on a per-request basis are not suitable for supporting the data requests of a large crowd willing to visualize phenomena. The possibly millions of data points introduce challenges for calculation, data-transfer and visualization on smartphones with limited graphics performance. We have created an architectural design, which combines a cloud-native approach with Big Data concepts used in the Internet of Things. The architectural design can be used as a generic foundation to implement a scalable backend for a platform, that covers aspects important for crowdsensing, such as social- and incentive features, as well as a sophisticated stream processing concept to calculate incoming measurement data and store pre-aggregated results. The calculation is based on a global grid system to index geospatial data for efficient aggregation and building a hierarchical geospatial relationship of averaged values, that can be directly used to rapidly and efficiently provide data on requests for visualization. We introduce the Noisemap project as an exemplary use case of such a platform and elaborate on certain requirements and challenges also related to frontend implementations. The goal of the project is to collect crowd-sensed noise measurements via smartphones and provide users information and a visualization of noise levels in their environment, which requires storing and processing in a central platform. A prototypic implementation for the measurement context of the Noisemap project is showing that the architectural design is indeed feasible to realize

    Traffic Re-engineering: Extending Resource Pooling Through the Application of Re-feedback

    Parallelism pervades the Internet, yet efficiently pooling this increasing path diversity has remained elusive. With no holistic solution for resource pooling, each layer of the Internet architecture attempts to balance traffic according to its own needs, potentially at the expense of others. From the edges, traffic is implicitly pooled over multiple paths by retrieving content from different sources. Within the network, traffic is explicitly balanced across multiple links through the use of traffic engineering. This work explores how the current architecture can be realigned to facilitate resource pooling at both network and transport layers, where tension between stakeholders is strongest. The central theme of this thesis is that traffic engineering can be performed more efficiently, flexibly and robustly through the use of re-feedback. A cross-layer architecture is proposed for sharing the responsibility for resource pooling across both hosts and network. Building on this framework, two novel forms of traffic management are evaluated. Efficient pooling of traffic across paths is achieved through the development of an in-network congestion balancer, which can function in the absence of multipath transport. Network and transport mechanisms are then designed and implemented to facilitate path fail-over, greatly improving resilience without requiring receiver side cooperation. These contributions are framed by a longitudinal measurement study which provides evidence for many of the design choices taken. A methodology for scalably recovering flow metrics from passive traces is developed which in turn is systematically applied to over five years of interdomain traffic data. The resulting findings challenge traditional assumptions on the preponderance of congestion control on resource sharing, with over half of all traffic being constrained by limits other than network capacity. All of the above represent concerted attempts to rethink and reassert traffic engineering in an Internet where competing solutions for resource pooling proliferate. By delegating responsibilities currently overloading the routing architecture towards hosts and re-engineering traffic management around the core strengths of the network, the proposed architectural changes allow the tussle surrounding resource pooling to be drawn out without compromising the scalability and evolvability of the Internet

    Geospatial Information Research: State of the Art, Case Studies and Future Perspectives

    Geospatial information science (GI science) is concerned with the development and application of geodetic and information science methods for modeling, acquiring, sharing, managing, exploring, analyzing, synthesizing, visualizing, and evaluating data on spatio-temporal phenomena related to the Earth. As an interdisciplinary scientific discipline, it focuses on developing and adapting information technologies to understand processes on the Earth and human-place interactions, to detect and predict trends and patterns in the observed data, and to support decision making. The authors – members of DGK, the Geoinformatics division, as part of the Committee on Geodesy of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, representing geodetic research and university teaching in Germany – have prepared this paper as a means to point out future research questions and directions in geospatial information science. For the different facets of geospatial information science, the state of art is presented and underlined with mostly own case studies. The paper thus illustrates which contributions the German GI community makes and which research perspectives arise in geospatial information science. The paper further demonstrates that GI science, with its expertise in data acquisition and interpretation, information modeling and management, integration, decision support, visualization, and dissemination, can help solve many of the grand challenges facing society today and in the future

    Self-adaptive Grid Resource Monitoring and discovery

    The Grid provides a novel platform where the scientific and engineering communities can share data and computation across multiple administrative domains. There are several key services that must be offered by Grid middleware; one of them being the Grid Information Service( GIS). A GIS is a Grid middleware component which maintains information about hardware, software, services and people participating in a virtual organisation( VO). There is an inherent need in these systems for the delivery of reliable performance. This thesis describes a number of approaches which detail the development and application of a suite of benchmarks for the prediction of the process of resource discovery and monitoring on the Grid. A series of experimental studies of the characterisation of performance using benchmarking, are carried out. Several novel predictive algorithms are presented and evaluated in terms of their predictive error. Furthermore, predictive methods are developed which describe the behaviour of MDS2 for a variable number of user requests. The MDS is also extended to include job information from a local scheduler; this information is queried using requests of greatly varying complexity. The response of the MDS to these queries is then assessed in terms of several performance metrics. The benchmarking of the dynamic nature of information within MDS3 which is based on the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA), and also the successor to MDS2, is also carried out. The performance of both the pull and push query mechanisms is analysed. GridAdapt (Self-adaptive Grid Resource Monitoring) is a new system that is proposed, built upon the Globus MDS3 benchmarking. It offers self-adaptation, autonomy and admission control at the Index Service, whilst ensuring that the MIDS is not overloaded and can meet its quality-of-service,f or example,i n terms of its average response time for servicing synchronous queries and the total number of queries returned per unit time
