    Desynchronization: Synthesis of asynchronous circuits from synchronous specifications

    Asynchronous implementation techniques, which measure logic delays at run time and activate registers accordingly, are inherently more robust than their synchronous counterparts, which estimate worst-case delays at design time, and constrain the clock cycle accordingly. De-synchronization is a new paradigm to automate the design of asynchronous circuits from synchronous specifications, thus permitting widespread adoption of asynchronicity, without requiring special design skills or tools. In this paper, we first of all study different protocols for de-synchronization and formally prove their correctness, using techniques originally developed for distributed deployment of synchronous language specifications. We also provide a taxonomy of existing protocols for asynchronous latch controllers, covering in particular the four-phase handshake protocols devised in the literature for micro-pipelines. We then propose a new controller which exhibits provably maximal concurrency, and analyze the performance of desynchronized circuits with respect to the original synchronous optimized implementation. We finally prove the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach, by showing its application to a set of real designs, including a complete implementation of the DLX microprocessor architectur

    Energy-Efficient Digital Circuit Design using Threshold Logic Gates

    abstract: Improving energy efficiency has always been the prime objective of the custom and automated digital circuit design techniques. As a result, a multitude of methods to reduce power without sacrificing performance have been proposed. However, as the field of design automation has matured over the last few decades, there have been no new automated design techniques, that can provide considerable improvements in circuit power, leakage and area. Although emerging nano-devices are expected to replace the existing MOSFET devices, they are far from being as mature as semiconductor devices and their full potential and promises are many years away from being practical. The research described in this dissertation consists of four main parts. First is a new circuit architecture of a differential threshold logic flipflop called PNAND. The PNAND gate is an edge-triggered multi-input sequential cell whose next state function is a threshold function of its inputs. Second a new approach, called hybridization, that replaces flipflops and parts of their logic cones with PNAND cells is described. The resulting \hybrid circuit, which consists of conventional logic cells and PNANDs, is shown to have significantly less power consumption, smaller area, less standby power and less power variation. Third, a new architecture of a field programmable array, called field programmable threshold logic array (FPTLA), in which the standard lookup table (LUT) is replaced by a PNAND is described. The FPTLA is shown to have as much as 50% lower energy-delay product compared to conventional FPGA using well known FPGA modeling tool called VPR. Fourth, a novel clock skewing technique that makes use of the completion detection feature of the differential mode flipflops is described. This clock skewing method improves the area and power of the ASIC circuits by increasing slack on timing paths. An additional advantage of this method is the elimination of hold time violation on given short paths. Several circuit design methodologies such as retiming and asynchronous circuit design can use the proposed threshold logic gate effectively. Therefore, the use of threshold logic flipflops in conventional design methodologies opens new avenues of research towards more energy-efficient circuits.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Computer Science 201

    hopCP: A concurrent hardware description language

    Journal ArticlehopCP is a language for the specification, simulation, and synthesis of hardware systems. hopCP captures the behavior of a hardware system by specifying the causal relationships between actions that the system can perform. No specific timing discipline is implied by a hopCP specification. Hence, hopCP specifications can be implemented as synchronous, asynchronous, or mixed synchronous and asynchronous circuits. Salient features of hopCP include nonatomic actions, synchronous and asynchronous styles of value communication, broadcast channels, a purely functional sublanguage to express the computational aspects of hardware behavior, and an efficient tool (called parComp) to infer the composite behavior of a collection of hopCP modules. Operational Semantics of hopCP in terms of labeled transition systems is presented. A few examples are described to illustrate the expressive power of hopCP. A summary of the implementation is also presented

    Adaptation of High Performance and High Capacity Reconfigurable Systems to OpenCL Programming Environments

    [EN] In this work, we adapt a reconfigurable computer system based on FPGA technologies to OpenCL programming environments. The reconfigurable system is part of a compute prototype of the MANGO European project that includes 96 FPGAs. To optimize the use and to obtain its maximum performance, it is essential to adapt it to heterogeneous systems programming environments such as OpenCL, which simplifies its programming. In this work, all the necessary activities for correct implementation of the software and hardware layer required for its use in OpenCL will be carried out, as well as an evaluation of the performance obtained and the flexibility offered by the solution provided. This work has been performed during an internship of 5 months. The internship is linked to an agreement between UPV and UniNa (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II).[ES] En este trabajo se va a realizar la adaptación de un sistema reconfigurable de cómputo basado en tecnologías de FPGAs hacia entornos de programación en OpenCL. El sistema reconfigurable forma parte de un prototipo de cálculo del proyecto Europeo MANGO que incluye 96 FPGAs. Con el fin de optimizar el uso y de obtener sus máximas prestaciones, se hace imprescindible una adaptación a entornos de programación de sistemas heterogéneos como OpenCL, lo cual simplifica su programación y uso. They are pervasive and their complexity is increasing rapidly. Distributed control systems for future "Intelligent Grid" and renewable energy generation systems are demanding high-performance, hard real-time computation, and more programmability. General-purpose computer systems are primarily designed to process data and not to interact with physical processes as required by these systems. Generic general-purpose architectures even with the use of real-time operating systems fail to meet the hard realtime constraints of hybrid system dynamics. ASIC, FPGA, or traditional embedded design approaches to these systems often result in expensive, complicated systems that are hard to program, reuse, or maintain. In this thesis, we propose a domain-specific architecture template targeting hybrid control system applications. Using power electronics control applications, we present new modeling techniques, synthesis methodologies, and a parameterizable computer architecture for these large distributed control systems. We propose a new system modeling approach, called Adaptive Hybrid Automaton, based on previous work in control system theory, that uses a mixed-model abstractions and lends itself well to digital processing. We develop a domain-specific architecture based on this modeling that uses heterogeneous processing units and predictable execution, called MARTHA. We develop a hard real-time aware router architecture to enable deterministic on-chip interconnect network communication. We present several algorithms for scheduling task-based applications onto these types of heterogeneous architectures. We create Heracles, an open-source, functional, parameterized, synthesizable many-core system design toolkit, that can be used to explore future multi/many-core processors with different topologies, routing schemes, processing elements or cores, and memory system organizations. Using the Heracles design tool we build a prototype of the proposed architecture using a state-of-the-art FPGA-based platform, and deploy and test it in actual physical power electronics systems.     Design of asynchronous microprocessor for power proportionality

    PhD ThesisMicroprocessors continue to get exponentially cheaper for end users following Moore’s law, while the costs involved in their design keep growing, also at an exponential rate. The reason is the ever increasing complexity of processors, which modern EDA tools struggle to keep up with. This makes further scaling for performance subject to a high risk in the reliability of the system. To keep this risk low, yet improve the performance, CPU designers try to optimise various parts of the processor. Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) is a significant part of the whole processor design flow, whose optimal design for a particular combination of available hardware resources and software requirements is crucial for building processors with high performance and efficient energy utilisation. This is a challenging task involving a lot of heuristics and high-level design decisions. Another issue impacting CPU reliability is continuous scaling for power consumption. For the last decades CPU designers have been mainly focused on improving performance, but “keeping energy and power consumption in mind”. The consequence of this was a development of energy-efficient systems, where energy was considered as a resource whose consumption should be optimised. As CMOS technology was progressing, with feature size decreasing and power delivered to circuit components becoming less stable, the energy resource turned from an optimisation criterion into a constraint, sometimes a critical one. At this point power proportionality becomes one of the most important aspects in system design. Developing methods and techniques which will address the problem of designing a power-proportional microprocessor, capable to adapt to varying operating conditions (such as low or even unstable voltage levels) and application requirements in the runtime, is one of today’s grand challenges. In this thesis this challenge is addressed by proposing a new design flow for the development of an ISA for microprocessors, which can be altered to suit a particular hardware platform or a specific operating mode. This flow uses an expressive and powerful formalism for the specification of processor instruction sets called the Conditional Partial Order Graph (CPOG). The CPOG model captures large sets of behavioural scenarios for a microarchitectural level in a computationally efficient form amenable to formal transformations for synthesis, verification and automated derivation of asynchronous hardware for the CPU microcontrol. The feasibility of the methodology, novel design flow and a number of optimisation techniques was proven in a full size asynchronous Intel 8051 microprocessor and its demonstrator silicon. The chip showed the ability to work in a wide range of operating voltage and environmental conditions. Depending on application requirements and power budget our ASIC supports several operating modes: one optimised for energy consumption and the other one for performance. This was achieved by extending a traditional datapath structure with an auxiliary control layer for adaptable and fault tolerant operation. These and other optimisations resulted in a reconfigurable and adaptable implementation, which was proven by measurements, analysis and evaluation of the chip.EPSR

    In this thesis we propose to realize the performance benefits of applicationspecific hardware optimizations in a general-purpose, multi-user system environment using a dynamically extensible microprocessor architecture. We have called our dynamically extensible microprocessor design the Extensible Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages, or eMIPS. The eMIPS architecture uses the interaction of fixed and configurable logic available in modern Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This interaction is used to address the limitations of current microprocessor architectures based solely on Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC). These limitations include inflexibility, size, and application specific performance optimization. The eMIPS system allows multiple secure extensions to load dynamically and to plug into the stages of a pipelined central processing unit (CPU) data path, thereby extending the core instruction set of the microprocessor. Extensions can also be used to realize on-chip peripherals, and if area permits, even multiple cores. Extension instructions reduce dramatically the execution time of frequently executed instruction patterns. These new functionalities we have developed can be exploited by patching the binaries of existing applications, without any changes to the compilers. A FPGA based workstation prototype and a flexible simulation system implementating this design demonstrates speedups of 2x-3x on a set of applications that include video games, real-time programs and the SPEC2000 integer benchmarks. eMIPS is the first realized workstation based entirely on a dynamically extensible microprocessor that is safe for general purpose, multi-user applications. By exposing the individual stages of the data path, eMIPS allows optimizations not previously possible. This includes permitting safe and coherent accesses to memory from within an extension, optimizing multi-branched blocks, and throwing precise and restart able exceptions from within an extension. This work describes a simplified implementation of an extensible microprocessor architecture based on the Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipeline Stages (MIPS) Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture. The concepts and methods contained within this thesis may be applied to other similar architectures. Given this simplified prototype we look forward to propose how this architecture will be expanded as it matures
