    Repositioning of european chemicals groups and changes in innovation management : the case of the french chimical industry

    Germany, Great Britain, and Switzerland are usually considered to be the dominant powers in the European chemical industry, since they are associated with companies of international stature such as Bayer, BASF, ICI, Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. Founded decades ago, these firms have marked the sector dynamics with their strategies regarding academic relations, the importance of patents, diversification within a multidivisional structure, and internationalization. At first sight, France would seem to be a less important player in the European chemical industry. However, today it is ranked second in Europe, just behind Germany, and with a greater annual growth rate, as shown in the table below. The current position of the French chemical industry is a result of two simultaneous factors: a change in the relative activity of sectors, and the repositioning of companies. This paper will examine the strategies used by the four French firms that today are the major players in achieving France's unexpected success: Atofina, the chemicals division of Total-Fina-Elf; Aventis, the company formed by a merger between Hoechst Life Sciences and Rhône-Poulenc; L'Oréal; and Air Liquide. The companies have differing histories with regards to the characteristics of the firm at its creation, the consequences of the oil crisis, and recent mergers and acquisitions.

    Study on the influence of indoor environment on perceived comfort in elderly care buildings

    北九州市立大学博士(工学)The paper takes a human-centered approach and aims to achieve perceived comfort. It applies physiological sensing technology and eye tracking technology to the study of perception-environment and quantifies the unobservable variable of perceived comfort through human factors technology. By analyzing the physiological indicators of different perceptual states obtained through measurements, and synchronously verifying the representativeness of the changes in various physiological indicators through subjective questionnaires, comfort states are determined, and corresponding spatial indicators and parameters are derived. Through experiments conducted in residential and restaurant spaces, one-way perceived comfort, room brightness under single functional behavior, spatial distance, appropriate sound pressure levels, comfortable temperature, humidity, and the use of warm and safe decorative materials are obtained as spatial indicators and features.doctoral thesi

    Alleviating Academic Stress Among 18-19-year-old Older Adolescents Through The Use Of Natural Elements In Indoor Spaces

    Mental stress is particularly prevalent among adolescents between the ages of 13-19, and long-term stress can lead to more serious problems such as anxiety and depression. The link between nature and adolescent health has long been a subject of interest. This research study is an exploration related to the theme “mental health protection,” exploring how a design intervention could inject natural elements into the interior spaces where stressful adolescents spend their time. This research paper reviews previous literature regarding mental health and adolescents, expounds on the causes and effects of adolescents’ stress, how adolescents are exposed to the natural environment, and multiple correlations between natural factors and adolescents’ psychological well-being. Based on student feedback, this study proposes a strategy for a prototype design that makes use of gutta-percha, a kind of bio-material from Eucommia Ulmoides. In order to verify the reliability of the design, alternative yet similar structural material was used for assembly and testing. The result of my testing was positive. In addition, I was able to define a research gap that separates this work from previous scholarship. Through my work, I also proposed a speculative prospect of integrating plant-human interaction and biofeedback through plant bionics responses to stress

    In July 2006 archaeologists from the University of Bristol and Atkins Heritage embarked on a contemporary archaeology project with a difference. We ‘excavated’ an old (1991) Ford Transit van, used by archaeologists and later by works and maintenance teams at the Ironbridge Museum. The object: to see what can be learnt from a very particular, common and characteristic type of contemporary place; to establish what archaeologists and archaeology can contribute to understanding the way society, and specifically we as archaeologists, use and inhabit these places; and to challenge and critique archaeologies of the contemporary past. In this report we describe our excavation and situate it within a wider debate about research practice in contemporary archaeology

    Exploring Epoxy Use at the Oak Ridge K-25 Facility and New Concerns about Neurotoxic Risks

    Epoxies are used widely in industrial and domestic applications, and apart from carcinogenic concerns, they are best known as both sensitizers and irritants in terms of dermatological and respiratory impacts. Neurological impacts from epoxy use, however, have not been reported thus far in the occupational or environmental health literature. This project was designed to further the understanding of epoxy materials and their applications in terms of the potential for harmful exposures, to understand what is presented in the industry, agency, and other scientific literature relative to exposure opportunities and the potential for neurotoxic impacts, and to document past usage of epoxies at the K-25 facility as a representation of circumstances involving higher exposures. With this information a public health strategy specific to the K-25 population and the epoxy industry as a whole was to be formulated to address potential neurotoxic concerns including the need for further medical care, industrial hygiene measurements, protective measures, toxicology, and epidemiology. To accomplish these tasks, comprehensive and current industry textbooks and literature were reviewed on epoxy formulation and usage. Key epoxy constituents were identified to complete the search for any existing literature on neurotoxic findings. Regulatory or agency investigations were explored to identify what is known thus far about exposures to these constituents and effects on workers. Relative to K-25 activities, a formal survey instrument was developed for information gathering purposes only, to ask workers about typical epoxy use practices, and to gain an understanding of the potential level of epoxy exposures in these settings. This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.
