    A LYAPUNOV BASED APPROACH TO ENERGY MAXIMIZATION IN RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

    This dissertation describes the design and implementation of Lyapunov-based control strategies for the maximization of the power captured by renewable energy harnessing technologies such as (i) a variable speed, variable pitch wind turbine, (ii) a variable speed wind turbine coupled to a doubly fed induction generator, and (iii) a solar power generating system charging a constant voltage battery. First, a torque control strategy is presented to maximize wind energy captured in variable speed, variable pitch wind turbines at low to medium wind speeds. The proposed strategy applies control torque to the wind turbine pitch and rotor subsystems to simultaneously control the blade pitch and tip speed ratio, via the rotor angular speed, to an optimum point at which the capture efficiency is maximum. The control method allows for aerodynamic rotor power maximization without exact knowledge of the wind turbine model. A series of numerical results show that the wind turbine can be controlled to achieve maximum energy capture. Next, a control strategy is proposed to maximize the wind energy captured in a variable speed wind turbine, with an internal induction generator, at low to medium wind speeds. The proposed strategy controls the tip speed ratio, via the rotor angular speed, to an optimum point at which the efficiency constant (or power coefficient) is maximal for a particular blade pitch angle and wind speed by using the generator rotor voltage as a control input. This control method allows for aerodynamic rotor power maximization without exact wind turbine model knowledge. Representative numerical results demonstrate that the wind turbine can be controlled to achieve near maximum energy capture. Finally, a power system consisting of a photovoltaic (PV) array panel, dc-to-dc switching converter, charging a battery is considered wherein the environmental conditions are time-varying. A backstepping PWM controller is developed to maximize the power of the solar generating system. The controller tracks a desired array voltage, designed online using an incremental conductance extremum-seeking algorithm, by varying the duty cycle of the switching converter. The stability of the control algorithm is demonstrated by means of Lyapunov analysis. Representative numerical results demonstrate that the grid power system can be controlled to track the maximum power point of the photovoltaic array panel in varying atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the performance of the proposed strategy is compared to the typical maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method of perturb and observe (P&O), where the converter dynamics are ignored, and is shown to yield better results

    Wind Turbine Controls for Farm and Offshore Operation

    Development of advanced control techniques is a critical measure for reducing the cost of energy for wind power generation, in terms of both enhancing energy capture and reducing fatigue load. There are two remarkable trends for wind energy. First, more and more large wind farms are developed in order to reduce the unit-power cost in installation, operation, maintenance and transmission. Second, offshore wind energy has received significant attention when the scarcity of land resource has appeared to be a major bottleneck for next level of wind penetration, especially for Europe and Asia. This dissertation study investigates on several wind turbine control issues in the context of wind farm and offshore operation scenarios. Traditional wind farm control strategies emphasize the effect of the deficit of average wind speed, i.e. on how to guarantee the power quality from grid integration angle by the control of the electrical systems or maximize the energy capture of the whole wind farm by optimizing the setting points of rotor speed and blade pitch angle, based on the use of simple wake models, such as Jensen wake model. In this study, more complex wake models including detailed wind speed deficit distribution across the rotor plane and wake meandering are used for load reduction control of wind turbine. A periodic control scheme is adopted for individual pitch control including static wake interaction, while for the case with wake meandering considered, both a dual-mode model predictive control and a multiple model predictive control is applied to the corresponding individual pitch control problem, based on the use of the computationally efficient quadratic programming solver qpOASES. Simulation results validated the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes. Besides, as an innovative nearly model-free strategy, the nested-loop extremum seeking control (NLESC) scheme is designed to maximize energy capture of a wind farm under both steady and turbulent wind. The NLESC scheme is evaluated with a simple wind turbine array consisting of three cascaded variable-speed turbines using the SimWindFarm simulation platform. For each turbine, the torque gain is adjusted to vary/control the corresponding axial induction factor. Simulation under smooth and turbulent winds shows the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Analysis shows that the optimal torque gain of each turbine in a cascade of turbines is invariant with wind speed if the wind direction does not change, which is supported by simulation results for smooth wind inputs. As changes of upstream turbine operation affects the downstream turbines with significant delays due to wind propagation, a cross-covariance based delay estimate is proposed as adaptive phase compensation between the dither and demodulation signals. Another subject of investigation in this research is the evaluation of an innovative scheme of actuation for stabilization of offshore floating wind turbines based on actively controlled aerodynamic vane actuators. For offshore floating wind turbines, underactuation has become a major issue and stabilization of tower/platform adds complexity to the control problem in addition to the general power/speed regulation and rotor load reduction controls. However, due to the design constraints and the significant power involved in the wind turbine structure, a unique challenge is presented to achieve low-cost, high-bandwidth and low power consumption design of actuation schemes. A recently proposed concept of vertical and horizontal vanes is evaluated to increase damping in roll motion and pitch motion, respectively. The simulation platform FAST has been modified including vertical and horizontal vane control. Simulation results validated the effectiveness of the proposed vertical and horizontal active vane actuators

    Nonlinear Dual-Mode Control of Variable-Speed Wind Turbines with Doubly Fed Induction Generators

    This paper presents a feedback/feedforward nonlinear controller for variable-speed wind turbines with doubly fed induction generators. By appropriately adjusting the rotor voltages and the blade pitch angle, the controller simultaneously enables: (a) control of the active power in both the maximum power tracking and power regulation modes, (b) seamless switching between the two modes, and (c) control of the reactive power so that a desirable power factor is maintained. Unlike many existing designs, the controller is developed based on original, nonlinear, electromechanically-coupled models of wind turbines, without attempting approximate linearization. Its development consists of three steps: (i) employ feedback linearization to exactly cancel some of the nonlinearities and perform arbitrary pole placement, (ii) design a speed controller that makes the rotor angular velocity track a desired reference whenever possible, and (iii) introduce a Lyapunov-like function and present a gradient-based approach for minimizing this function.     Small-Signal Modelling and Analysis of Doubly-Fed Induction Generators in Wind Power Applications

    The worldwide demand for more diverse and greener energy supply has had a significant impact on the development of wind energy in the last decades. From 2 GW in 1990, the global installed capacity has now reached about 100 GW and is estimated to grow to 1000 GW by 2025. As wind power penetration increases, it is important to investigate its effect on the power system. Among the various technologies available for wind energy conversion, the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) is one of the preferred solutions because it offers the advantages of reduced mechanical stress and optimised power capture thanks to variable speed operation. This work presents the small-signal modelling and analysis of the DFIG for power system stability studies. This thesis starts by reviewing the mathematical models of wind turbines with DFIG convenient for power system studies. Different approaches proposed in the literature for the modelling of the turbine, drive-train, generator, rotor converter and external power system are discussed. It is shown that the flexibility of the drive train should be represented by a two-mass model in the presence of a gearbox. In the analysis part, the steady-state behaviour of the DFIG is examined. Comparison is made with the conventional synchronous generators (SG) and squirrel-cage induction generators to highlight the differences between the machines. The initialisation of the DFIG dynamic variables and other operating quantities is then discussed. Various methods are briefly reviewed and a step-by-step procedure is suggested to avoid the iterative computations in initial condition mentioned in the literature. The dynamical behaviour of the DFIG is studied with eigenvalue analysis. Modal analysis is performed for both open-loop and closed-loop situations. The effect of parameters and operating point variations on small signal stability is observed. For the open-loop DFIG, conditions on machine parameters are obtained to ensure stability of the system. For the closed-loop DFIG, it is shown that the generator electrical transients may be neglected once the converter controls are properly tuned. A tuning procedure is proposed and conditions on proportional gains are obtained for stable electrical dynamics. Finally, small-signal analysis of a multi-machine system with both SG and DFIG is performed. It is shown that there is no common mode to the two types of generators. The result confirms that the DFIG does not introduce negative damping to the system, however it is also shown that the overall effect of the DFIG on the power system stability depends on several structural factors and a general statement as to whether it improves or detriorates the oscillatory stability of a system can not be made

    A Practical Model and an Optimal Controller for Variable Speed Wind Turbine Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator

    The aim of this paper is the complete modeling and simulation of an optimal control system using practical setup parameters for a wind energy conversion system (WECS) through a direct driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (D-PMSG) feeding ac power to the utility grid. The generator is connected to the grid through a back-to-back PWM converter with a switching frequency of 10 KHz. A maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is proposed to ensure the maximum power capture from wind turbine, and a PI controller designed for the wind turbine to generate optimum speed for the generator via an aerodynamic model. MATLAB/Simulink results demonstrate the accuracy of the developed control scheme

    Performance prediction of wind turbines utilizing passive smart blades: approaches and evaluation

    The induced deformation, because of the presence of elastic coupling in the structure of passive smart blades, is the key parameter that affects the wind turbine aerodynamic performance, namely rotor mechanical power and blade loading. Therefore, in order to determine the aerodynamic performance of these turbines, a structural analyser is also required to bring the effect of the induced deformation into account. When predicting the rotor mechanical power, additional complexity arises when the blades are bend-twist-coupled. In this case, an iterative coupled-aero-structure analysis must be carried out at each given wind speed. Further difficulties in simulation of these turbines are posed by the fact that the current analytical models for analysis of structures made of anisotropic composite materials are not accurate enough. This differentiates the numerical simulation of wind turbines utilizing passive smart blades from the simulation of wind turbines with conventional blades. Different strategies have been proposed and followed by investigators in simulation of wind turbines utilizing passive smart blades. These methods can be categorized by the approach adopted in treating the torsional-induced deformation. In these studies, the induced twist has been predicted, planned or a combination of both.     Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study

    In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example

    Measured performance of a tip-controlled, teetered rotor with an NACA 64 sub 3-618 tip airfoil

    Tests were conducted on the Mod-O 100 kW Wind Turbine to determine the performance of a tip-controlled rotor having an NACA 64 sub-618 airfoil over the moveable outboard 30% of the blade, while operating at nominal rotor speeds of 21 and 31 rpm. Tests were conducted at two rotor speeds to assess the performance improvement which could be realized with 2-speed operation. Test data are compared with analytical predictions and concluding remarks are presented. The results indicate a clear performance improvement for the 2-speed operation
