    Multivariate texture discrimination based on geodesics to class centroids on a generalized Gaussian Manifold

    A texture discrimination scheme is proposed wherein probability distributions are deployed on a probabilistic manifold for modeling the wavelet statistics of images. We consider the Rao geodesic distance (GD) to the class centroid for texture discrimination in various classification experiments. We compare the performance of GD to class centroid with the Euclidean distance in a similar context, both in terms of accuracy and computational complexity. Also, we compare our proposed classification scheme with the k-nearest neighbor algorithm. Univariate and multivariate Gaussian and Laplace distributions, as well as generalized Gaussian distributions with variable shape parameter are each evaluated as a statistical model for the wavelet coefficients. The GD to the centroid outperforms the Euclidean distance and yields superior discrimination compared to the k-nearest neighbor approach

    Gray-level Texture Characterization Based on a New Adaptive

    In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear exponential adaptive two-dimensional (2-D) filter for texture characterization. The filter coefficients are updated with the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm. The proposed nonlinear model is used for texture characterization with a 2-D Auto-Regressive (AR) adaptive model. The main advantage of the new nonlinear exponential adaptive 2-D filter is the reduced number of coefficients used to characterize the nonlinear parametric models of images regarding the 2-D second-order Volterra model. Whatever the degree of the non-linearity, the problem results in the same number of coefficients as in the linear case. The characterization efficiency of the proposed exponential model is compared to the one provided by both 2-D linear and Volterra filters and the cooccurrence matrix method. The comparison is based on two criteria usually used to evaluate the features discriminating ability and the class quantification. Extensive experiments proved that the exponential model coefficients give better results in texture discrimination than several other parametric features even in a noisy context

    Rotation-Covariant Texture Learning Using Steerable Riesz Wavelets

    We propose a texture learning approach that exploits local organizations of scales and directions. First, linear combinations of Riesz wavelets are learned using kernel support vector machines. The resulting texture signatures are modeling optimal class-wise discriminatory properties. The visualization of the obtained signatures allows verifying the visual relevance of the learned concepts. Second, the local orientations of the signatures are optimized to maximize their responses, which is carried out analytically and can still be expressed as a linear combination of the initial steerable Riesz templates. The global process is iteratively repeated to obtain final rotation-covariant texture signatures. Rapid convergence of class-wise signatures is observed, which demonstrates that the instances are projected into a feature space that leverages the local organizations of scales and directions. Experimental evaluation reveals average classification accuracies in the range of 97% to 98% for the Outex_TC_00010, the Outex_TC_00012, and the Contrib_TC_00000 suites for even orders of the Riesz transform, and suggests high robustness to changes in images orientation and illumination. The proposed framework requires no arbitrary choices of scales and directions and is expected to perform well in a large range of computer vision applications

    Rotation-invariant texture retrieval with Gaussianized steerable pyramids

    Abstract—This paper presents a novel rotation-invariant image retrieval scheme based on a transformation of the texture information via a steerable pyramid. First, we fit the distribution of the subband coefficients using a joint alpha-stable sub-Gaussian model to capture their non-Gaussian behavior. Then, we apply a normalization process in order to Gaussianize the coefficients. As a result, the feature extraction step consists of estimating the covariances between the normalized pyramid coefficients. The similarity between two distinct texture images is measured by minimizing a rotation-invariant version of the Kullback–Leibler Divergence between their corresponding multivariate Gaussian distributions, where the minimization is performed over a set of rotation angles.
