PQ issues are raised not only in normal three-phase systems but also with the incorporation of different distributed generations (DGs), including renewable energy sources, storage systems, and other systems like diesel generators, fuel cells, etc. The prevalence of these issues comes from the non-linear features and rapid changing of power electronics devices, such as switch-mode converters for adjustable speed drives and diode or thyristor rectifiers. The wide use of these fast switching devices in the utility system leads to an increase in disturbances associated with harmonics and reactive power. The occurrence of PQ disturbances in turn creates several unwanted effects on the utility system. Therefore, many researchers are working on the enhancement of PQ using different custom power devices (CPDs). In this work, the authors highlight the significance of the PQ in the utility network, its effect, and its solution, using different CPDs, such as passive, active, and hybrid filters. Further, the authors point out several compensation strategies, including reference signal generation and gating signal strategies. In addition, this paper also presents the role of the active power filter (APF) in different DG systems. Some technical and economic considerations and future developments are also discussed in this literature. For easy reference, a volume of journals of more than 140 publications on this particular subject is reported. The Power Quality (PQ) problems in power distribution systems are not new but only recently the effects of these problems have gained public awareness. These non-linear loads are constructed by nonlinear devices in which the current is not proportional to the applied voltage. For the harmonic elimination different methods are used, but in this paper a novel fuzzy logic controller for a three-phase shunt active power filter for the power quality improvement such as reactive power and harmonic current compensation generated due to nonlinear loads. The hybrid fuzzy sliding-mode control (HFSMC) approach is proposed such that it can be applied with advantages to both fuzzy and sliding-mode controller. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy.     Analysis, Dimensioning and Robust Control of Shunt Active Filter for Harmonic Currents Compensation in Electrical Mains

    In this chapter some results related to Shunt Active Filters (SAFs) and obtained by the authors and some coauthors are reported. SAFs are complex power electronics equipments adopted to compensate for cur-rent harmonic pollution in electric mains, due to nonlinear loads. By using a proper "floating" capacitor as energy reservoir, the SAF purpose is to inject in the line grid currents canceling the polluting har-monics. Control algorithms play a key role for such devices and, in general, in many power electronics applications. Moreover, systems theory is crucial, since it is the mathematical tool that enables a deep understanding of the involved dynamics of such systems, allowing a correct dimensioning, beside an effective control. As a matter of facts, current injection objective can be straightforwardly formulated as an output tracking control problem. In this fashion, the structural and insidious marginally-stable internal/zero dynamics of SAFs can be immediately highlighted and characterized in terms of sizing and control issues. For what concerns the control design strictly, time-scale separation among output and internal dynamics can be effectively exploited to split the control design in different stages that can be later aggregated, by using singular perturbation analysis.     Non-linear load deteriorates the quality of current waveforms at the point of common coupling of various consumers. Active power filter (APFs) is used to mitigate the most concern harmonic pollution in an electrical network. The controller part is the nucleus of an active power filter configuration. Active power filter performance is affected significantly by the selection of current control techniques. The active filter and its current control must have the capability to track sudden slope variations in the current reference to compensate the distorted current drawn by the voltage source inverter. Therefore, the choice and implementation of the current regulator is more important for the achievement of a satisfactory performance level. In this survey, technical reviews of various types of controllers covering a wide range have been presented. This work also reveals the advantages and disadvantages of the practiced control strategies. The effectiveness of the study will help the researchers to choose the proper control methods for various applicationsof active power filter.Nelinearni tereti pogorĆĄavaju kvalitetu strujnih valova u točki u kojoj se spaja viĆĄe potroĆĄača.     Neuro-Fuzzy Control Technique in Hybrid Power Filter for Power Quality Improvement in a Three-Phase Three-Wire Power System

    Hybrid power filters have proven to play a vital role in harmonic elimination as well as reactive power compensation in power systems concentrated with highly nonlinear loads which has in the last decade increased due to industrial automation and use of power converters based systems in industries and our homes. This paper presents an approach to hybrid shunt active filter for compensating voltage/current harmonics in a three phase three wire system. It is a combination of a shunt C-type high-pass filter in parallel with an active filter controlled by a Neuro-fuzzy controller. The C-type will help to reduce component rating for active filter and suppress the overall filter resonance while active filter compensate for the low order harmonics.  A three phase converter supplying highly inductive load has been chosen as a typical nonlinear load for which a shunt hybrid power filter comprising of a shunt C-type high pass passive  filter and a shunt active filter is employed to improve the power quality at the source end. Extensive simulation has been carried out and results obtained from the proposed approach gives comparatively better total harmonic distortion (THD) value.     Kajian ini adalah berkisar tentang pembelajaran rnelalui pencarian maklumat pembelajaran menggunakan enjin pencari. Terdapat banyak jenis enjin pencari yang popular di dalam internet seperti Yahoo, Google, Altavista, Infoseek dan Excite. Namun begitu, enjin pencari tersebut mempamerkan keputusan carian secara meluas dan ada kalanya tidak berkaitan dengan carian topik. Oleh sebab itu, pengguna internet perlu mempunyai kemahiran untuk melakukan carian bagi mendapatkan keputusan carian yang bersesuaian dengan carian ke atas topik. Pengguna internet juga mesti mengkaji dan mempraktikkan beberapa teknik untuk memperincikan keputusan carian dalam memperolehi maklumat yang relevan. Alternatif kepada masalah ini adalah membangunkan enjin pencari ODITS untuk kegunaan pelajar. Di dalam enjin pencari ini, aspek-aspek yang dikaji adalah rekabentuk antaramuka, penggunaan enjin pencari dalam mendapatkan bahan pembelajaran, pembelajaran kendiri dan rujukan tambahan untuk kegunaan pelajar. Seramai 28 orang pelajar Diploma Teknologi Maklumat semester III dipilih sebagai responden. Instrumen kajian yang digunakan adalah borang soal selidik. Ia dibahagikan kepada 5 bahagian iaitu bahagian A (demografi), bahagian B (bahan pembelajaran), bahagian C (pembelajaran kendiri) dan bahagian E (rujukan tambahan). Data-data yang diperolehi dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences). Data-data dipaparkan di dalam bentuk min, peratusan dan sisihan piawai. Keputusan dibentangkan dalam bentuk jadual dan rajah. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa rekabentuk antaramuka enjin pencari ODITS adalah menarik dan enjin pencari ODITS boleh dijadikan bahan pembelajaran. Selain itu, pembelajaran kendiri dapat dilaksanakan dan penggunaan enjin pencari ini boleh dijadikan sebagai rujukan tambahan kepada para pelajar. Akhir sekali, beberapa cadangan untuk kajian lanjutan telah dikemukakan
