MSE minimized joint transmission in coordinated multipoint systems with sparse feedback and constrained backhaul requirements
In a joint transmission coordinated multipoint (JT-CoMP) system, a shared spectrum is utilized by all neighbor cells. In the downlink, a group of base stations (BSs) coordinately transmit the users’ data to avoid serious interference at the users in the boundary of the cells, thus substantially improving area fairness. However, this comes at the cost of high feedback and backhaul load; In a frequency division duplex system, all users at the cell boundaries have to collect and send feedback of the downlink channel state information (CSI). In centralized JT-CoMP, although with capabilities for perfect coordination, a central coordination node have to send the computed precoding weights and corresponding data to all cells which can overwhelm the backhaul resources. In this paper, we design a JT-CoMP scheme, by which the sum of the mean square error (MSE) at the boundary users is minimized, while feedback and backhaul loads are constrained and the load is balanced between BSs. Our design is based on the singular value decomposition of CSI matrix and optimization of a binary link selection matrix to provide sparse feedback—constrained backhaul link. For comparison, we adopt the previously presented schemes for feedback and backhaul reduction in the physical layer. Extensive numerical evaluations show that the proposed scheme can reduce the MSE with at least 25 % , compared to the adopted and existing schemes
Partial joint processing with efficient backhauling using particle swarm optimization
In cellular communication systems with frequency reuse factor of one, user terminals (UT) at the cell-edge are prone to intercell interference. Joint processing is one of the coordinated multipoint transmission techniques proposed to mitigate this interference. In the case of centralized joint processing, the channel state information fed back by the users need to be available at the central coordination node for precoding. The precoding weights (with the user data) need to be available at the corresponding base stations to serve the UTs. These increase the backhaul traffic. In this article, partial joint processing (PJP) is considered as a general framework that allows reducing the amount of required feedback. However, it is difficult to achieve a corresponding reduction on the backhaul related to the precoding weights, when a linear zero forcing beamforming technique is used. In this work, particle swarm optimization is proposed as a tool to design the precoding weights under feedback and backhaul constraints related to PJP. The precoder obtained with the objective of weighted interference minimization allows some multiuser interference in the system, and it is shown to improve the sum rate by 66% compared to a conventional zero forcing approach, for those users experiencing low signal to interference plus noise ratio
Esquemas de cooperação entre estações base para o LTE no sentido descendente
The explosive growth in wireless traffic and in the number of connected devices as smart phones or computers, are causing a dramatic increase in the levels of interference, which significantly degrades the capacity gains promised by the point-to-point multi input, multi output (MIMO) based techniques. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly clear that major new improvements in spectral efficiency of wireless networks will have to entail addressing intercell interference. So, there is a need for a new cellular architecture that can take these factors under consideration. It is in this context that LTE-Advanced arises.
One of the most promising LTE-Advanced technology is Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP), which allows base stations to cooperate among them, in order to mitigate or eliminate the intercell interference and, by doing so, increase the system’s capacity. This thesis intends to study this concept, implementing some schemes that fall under the CoMP concept.
In this thesis we consider a distributed precoded multicell approach, where the precoders are computed locally at each BS to mitigate the intercell interference. Two precoder are considered: distributed zero forcing (DZF) and distributed virtual signal-to-interference noise ratio (DVSINR) recently proposed. Then the system is further optimized by computing a power allocation algorithm over the subcarriers that minimizes the average bit error rate (BER). The considered algorithms are also evaluated under imperfect channel state information. A quantized version of the CSI associated to the different links between the BS and the UT is feedback from the UT to the BS. This information is then employed by the different BSs to perform the precoding design. A new DVSINR precoder explicitly designed under imperfect CSI is proposed.
The proposed schemes were implemented considering the LTE specifications, and the results show that the considered precoders are efficiently to remove the interference even under imperfect CSI.O crescimento exponencial no tráfego de comunicações sem-fios e no número de dispositivos utilizados (smart phones, computadores portáteis, etc.) está a causar um aumento significativo nos nÃveis de interferência, que prejudicam significativamente os ganhos de capacidade assegurados pelas tecnologias baseadas em ligações ponto-a-ponto MIMO.
Large System Analysis of Base Station Cooperation for Power Minimization
This work focuses on a large-scale multi-cell multi-user MIMO system in which
base stations (BSs) of antennas each communicate with
single-antenna user equipments. We consider the design of the linear precoder
that minimizes the total power consumption while ensuring target user rates.
Three configurations with different degrees of cooperation among BSs are
considered: the coordinated beamforming scheme (only channel state information
is shared among BSs), the coordinated multipoint MIMO processing technology or
network MIMO (channel state and data cooperation), and a single cell
beamforming scheme (only local channel state information is used for
beamforming while channel state cooperation is needed for power allocation).
The analysis is conducted assuming that and grow large with a non
trivial ratio and imperfect channel state information (modeled by the
generic Gauss-Markov formulation form) is available at the BSs. Tools of random
matrix theory are used to compute, in explicit form, deterministic
approximations for: (i) the parameters of the optimal precoder; (ii) the powers
needed to ensure target rates; and (iii) the total transmit power. These
results are instrumental to get further insight into the structure of the
optimal precoders and also to reduce the implementation complexity in
large-scale networks. Numerical results are used to validate the asymptotic
analysis in the finite system regime and to make comparisons among the
different configurations.Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures, to appear IEEE Trans. Wireless Commun. A

Group Sparse Precoding for Cloud-RAN with Multiple User Antennas
Cloud radio access network (C-RAN) has become a promising network
architecture to support the massive data traffic in the next generation
cellular networks. In a C-RAN, a massive number of low-cost remote antenna
ports (RAPs) are connected to a single baseband unit (BBU) pool via high-speed
low-latency fronthaul links, which enables efficient resource allocation and
interference management. As the RAPs are geographically distributed, the group
sparse beamforming schemes attracts extensive studies, where a subset of RAPs
is assigned to be active and a high spectral efficiency can be achieved.
However, most studies assumes that each user is equipped with a single antenna.
How to design the group sparse precoder for the multiple antenna users remains
little understood, as it requires the joint optimization of the mutual coupling
transmit and receive beamformers. This paper formulates an optimal joint RAP
selection and precoding design problem in a C-RAN with multiple antennas at
each user. Specifically, we assume a fixed transmit power constraint for each
RAP, and investigate the optimal tradeoff between the sum rate and the number
of active RAPs. Motivated by the compressive sensing theory, this paper
formulates the group sparse precoding problem by inducing the -norm as
a penalty and then uses the reweighted heuristic to find a solution.
By adopting the idea of block diagonalization precoding, the problem can be
formulated as a convex optimization, and an efficient algorithm is proposed
based on its Lagrangian dual. Simulation results verify that our proposed
algorithm can achieve almost the same sum rate as that obtained from exhaustive
search
Interference Management in 5G Reverse TDD HetNets with Wireless Backhaul: A Large System Analysis
This work analyzes a heterogeneous network (HetNet), which comprises a macro
base station (BS) equipped with a large number of antennas and an overlaid
dense tier of small cell access points (SCAs) using a wireless backhaul for
data traffic. The static and low mobility user equipment terminals (UEs) are
associated with the SCAs while those with medium-to-high mobility are served by
the macro BS. A reverse time division duplexing (TDD) protocol is used by the
two tiers, which allows the BS to locally estimate both the intra-tier and
inter-tier channels. This knowledge is then used at the BS either in the uplink
(UL) or in the downlink (DL) to simultaneously serve the macro UEs (MUEs) and
to provide the wireless backhaul to SCAs. A geographical separation of
co-channel SCAs is proposed to limit the interference coming from the UL
signals of MUEs. A concatenated linear precoding technique employing either
zero-forcing (ZF) or regularized ZF is used at the BS to simultaneously serve
MUEs and SCAs in DL while nulling interference toward those SCAs in UL. We
evaluate and characterize the performance of the system through the power
consumption of UL and DL transmissions under the assumption that target rates
must be satisfied and imperfect channel state information is available for
MUEs. The analysis is conducted in the asymptotic regime where the number of BS
antennas and the network size (MUEs and SCAs) grow large with fixed ratios.
Results from large system analysis are used to provide concise formulae for the
asymptotic UL and DL transmit powers and precoding vectors under the above
assumptions. Numerical results are used to validate the analysis in different
settings and to make comparisons with alternative network architectures.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. To appear IEEE J. Select. Areas Commun. --

A Theoretical Performance Bound for Joint Beamformer Design of Wireless Fronthaul and Access Links in Downlink C-RAN
It is known that data rates in standard cellular networks are limited due to
inter-cell interference. An effective solution of this problem is to use the
multi-cell cooperation idea. In Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), which is a
candidate solution in 5G and future communication networks, cooperation is
applied by means of central processors (CPs) connected to simple remote radio
heads with finite capacity fronthaul links. In this study, we consider a
downlink C-RAN with a wireless fronthaul and aim to minimize total power spent
by jointly designing beamformers for fronthaul and access links. We consider
the case where perfect channel state information is not available in the CP. We
first derive a novel theoretical performance bound for the problem defined.
Then we propose four algorithms with different complexities to show the
tightness of the bound. The first two algorithms apply successive convex
optimizations with semi-definite relaxation idea where other two are adapted
from well-known beamforming design methods. The detailed simulations under
realistic channel conditions show that as the complexity of the algorithm
increases, the corresponding performance becomes closer to the bound.Comment: 30 pages, single column, 11 figures, submitted to Transactions on
