    Web Cube: A New Model for 3-D Web Browsing Based on Hand Gesture Interaction

    3-D web browsing is a promising trend for interaction with web content. However it is still illusive between virtual reality applications on the one side, and conventional web browsing on the other. In this research we propose a new model for 3-D web browsing that capitalizes on features of virtual reality technology with those of conventional browsing in order to provide an enhanced interactive user experience with web content. The new model is based on representing information content elements in 3-D perspective and organizing them inside a 3-D container that we call a “Web Cube” for 3-D web browsing. Furthermore, the model defines appropriate interaction mechanisms based on hand gestures. The model has been evaluated using an experimental technique to evaluate its efficiency, and a questionnaire to evaluate user satisfaction

    IDeixis : image-based deixis for recognizing locations

This is an image-based deixis capable of pointing at a distant location away from the user's current location. We demonstrate our approach on an application allowing users to browse web pages matching the image of a nearby location. Common image search metrics can match images captured with a camera-equipped mobile device to images found on the World Wide Web. The users can recognize the location if those pages contain information about this location (e.g. name, facts, stories ... etc). Since the amount of information displayable on the device is limited, automatic keyword extraction methods can be applied to help efficiently identify relevant pieces of location information. Searching the entire web can be computationally overwhelming, so we devise a hybrid image-and-keyword searching technique. First, image-search is performed over images and links to their source web pages in a database that indexes only a small fraction of the web. Then, relevant keywords on these web pages are automatically identified and submitted to an existing text-based search engine (e.g. Google) that indexes a much larger portion of the web. Finally, the resulting image set is filtered to retain images close to the original query in terms of visual similarity.     Seamful interweaving: heterogeneity in the theory and design of interactive systems

    Design experience and theoretical discussion suggest that a narrow design focus on one tool or medium as primary may clash with the way that everyday activity involves the interweaving and combination of many heterogeneous media. Interaction may become seamless and unproblematic, even if the differences, boundaries and 'seams' in media are objectively perceivable. People accommodate and take advantage of seams and heterogeneity, in and through the process of interaction. We use an experiment with a mixed reality system to ground and detail our discussion of seamful design, which takes account of this process, and theory that reflects and informs such design. We critique the 'disappearance' mentioned by Weiser as a goal for ubicomp, and Dourish's 'embodied interaction' approach to HCI, suggesting that these design ideals may be unachievable or incomplete because they underemphasise the interdependence of 'invisible' non-rationalising interaction and focused rationalising interaction within ongoing activity

    Image Retrieval within Augmented Reality

    Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht das Potenzial von Augmented Reality zur Verbesserung von Image Retrieval Prozessen. Herausforderungen in Design und Gebrauchstauglichkeit wurden für beide Forschungsbereiche dargelegt und genutzt, um Designziele für Konzepte zu entwerfen. Eine Taxonomie für Image Retrieval in Augmented Reality wurde basierend auf der Forschungsarbeit entworfen und eingesetzt, um verwandte Arbeiten und generelle Ideen für Interaktionsmöglichkeiten zu strukturieren. Basierend auf der Taxonomie wurden Anwendungsszenarien als weitere Anforderungen für Konzepte formuliert. Mit Hilfe der generellen Ideen und Anforderungen wurden zwei umfassende Konzepte für Image Retrieval in Augmented Reality ausgearbeitet. Eins der Konzepte wurde auf einer Microsoft HoloLens umgesetzt und in einer Nutzerstudie evaluiert. Design and usability challenges were identified for both fields of research in order to formulate design goals for the development of concepts. A taxonomy for image retrieval within augmented reality was elaborated based on research work and used to structure related work and basic ideas for interaction. Based on the taxonomy, application scenarios were formulated as further requirements for concepts. Using the basic interaction ideas and the requirements, two comprehensive concepts for image retrieval within augmented reality were elaborated. One of the concepts was implemented using a Microsoft HoloLens and evaluated in a user study.     Gravity optimised particle filter for hand tracking

    This paper presents a gravity optimised particle filter (GOPF) where the magnitude of the gravitational force for every particle is proportional to its weight. GOPF attracts nearby particles and replicates new particles as if moving the particles towards the peak of the likelihood distribution, improving the sampling efficiency. GOPF is incorporated into a technique for hand features tracking. A fast approach to hand features detection and labelling using convexity defects is also presented. Experimental results show that GOPF outperforms the standard particle filter and its variants, as well as state-of-the-art CamShift guided particle filter using a significantly reduced number of particles

    Effective Identity Management on Mobile Devices Using Multi-Sensor Measurements

    Due to the dramatic increase in popularity of mobile devices in the past decade, sensitive user information is stored and accessed on these devices every day. Securing sensitive data stored and accessed from mobile devices, makes user-identity management a problem of paramount importance. The tension between security and usability renders the task of user-identity verification on mobile devices challenging. Meanwhile, an appropriate identity management approach is missing since most existing technologies for user-identity verification are either one-shot user verification or only work in restricted controlled environments. To solve the aforementioned problems, we investigated and sought approaches from the sensor data generated by human-mobile interactions. The data are collected from the on-board sensors, including voice data from microphone, acceleration data from accelerometer, angular acceleration data from gyroscope, magnetic force data from magnetometer, and multi-touch gesture input data from touchscreen. We studied the feasibility of extracting biometric and behaviour features from the on-board sensor data and how to efficiently employ the features extracted to perform user-identity verification on the smartphone device. Based on the experimental results of the single-sensor modalities, we further investigated how to integrate them with hardware such as fingerprint and Trust Zone to practically fulfill a usable identity management system for both local application and remote services control.
