Advances in PID Control
Since the foundation and up to the current state-of-the-art in control engineering, the problems of PID control steadily attract great attention of numerous researchers and remain inexhaustible source of new ideas for process of control system design and industrial applications. PID control effectiveness is usually caused by the nature of dynamical processes, conditioned that the majority of the industrial dynamical processes are well described by simple dynamic model of the first or second order. The efficacy of PID controllers vastly falls in case of complicated dynamics, nonlinearities, and varying parameters of the plant. This gives a pulse to further researches in the field of PID control. Consequently, the problems of advanced PID control system design methodologies, rules of adaptive PID control, self-tuning procedures, and particularly robustness and transient performance for nonlinear systems, still remain as the areas of the lively interests for many scientists and researchers at the present time. The recent research results presented in this book provide new ideas for improved performance of PID control applications
Recent Advances in Robust Control
Robust control has been a topic of active research in the last three decades culminating in H_2/H_\infty and \mu design methods followed by research on parametric robustness, initially motivated by Kharitonov's theorem, the extension to non-linear time delay systems, and other more recent methods. The two volumes of Recent Advances in Robust Control give a selective overview of recent theoretical developments and present selected application examples. The volumes comprise 39 contributions covering various theoretical aspects as well as different application areas. The first volume covers selected problems in the theory of robust control and its application to robotic and electromechanical systems. The second volume is dedicated to special topics in robust control and problem specific solutions. Recent Advances in Robust Control will be a valuable reference for those interested in the recent theoretical advances and for researchers working in the broad field of robotics and mechatronics

Diagnostic and adaptive redundant robotic planning and control
Neural networks and fuzzy logic are combined into a hierarchical structure capable of planning, diagnosis, and control for a redundant, nonlinear robotic system in a real world scenario. Throughout this work levels of this overall approach are demonstrated for a redundant robot and hand combination as it is commanded to approach, grasp, and successfully manipulate objects for a wheelchair-bound user in a crowded, unpredictable environment. Four levels of hierarchy are developed and demonstrated, from the lowest level upward: diagnostic individual motor control, optimal redundant joint allocation for trajectory planning, grasp planning with tip and slip control, and high level task planning for multiple arms and manipulated objects. Given the expectations of the user and of the constantly changing nature of processes, the robot hierarchy learns from its experiences in order to more efficiently execute the next related task, and allocate this knowledge to the appropriate levels of planning and control. The above approaches are then extended to automotive and space applications

Oracle-Guided Design and Analysis of Learning-Based Cyber-Physical Systems
We are in world where autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars, surgical robots, robotic manipulators are becoming a reality. Such systems are considered \textit{safety-critical} since they interact with humans on a regular basis. Hence, before such systems can be integrated into our day to day life, we need to guarantee their safety. Recent success in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) has led to an increase in their use in real world robotic systems. For example, complex perception modules in self-driving cars and deep reinforcement learning controllers in robotic manipulators. Although powerful, they introduce an additional level of complexity when it comes to the formal analysis of autonomous systems. In this thesis, such systems are designated as Learning-Based Cyber-Physical Systems~(LB-CPS). In this thesis, we take inspiration from the Oracle-Guided Inductive Synthesis~(OGIS) paradigm to develop frameworks which can aid in achieving formal guarantees in different stages of an autonomous system design and analysis pipeline. Furthermore, we show that to guarantee the safety of LB-CPS, the design (synthesis) and analysis (verification) must consider feedback from the other. We consider five important parts of the design and analysis process and show a strong coupling among them, namely (i) Robust Control Synthesis from High Level Safety Specifications; (ii) Diagnosis and Repair of Safety Requirements for Control Synthesis; (iii) Counter-example Guided Data Augmentation for training high-accuracy ML models; (iv) Simulation-Guided Falsification and Verification against Adversarial Environments; and (v) Bridging Model and Real-World Gap. Finally, we introduce a software toolkit \verifai{} for the design and analysis of AI based systems, which was developed to provide a common formal platform to implement design and analysis frameworks for LB-CPS

Design, implementation and validation of an exoskeletal robot for locomotion studies in rodents
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2012.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 214-226).Growing interest in robotic treatment of patients with neurological injury motivates the development of therapeutic robots for basic research into recovery. Though humans are the ultimate beneficiaries, basic research frequently involves rodent models of neurological injury, which motivates robotic devices that can interact with rats or mice. Currently, available apparatus for locomotion studies of rodents is built upon treadmills, which simplify the design and implementation but also restrict the scope of possible experiments. This is largely due to the treadmill's single-dimensional movement and the lack of accommodation for natural or voluntary movement of the animal. In order to open up new possibilities for locomotion studies in rodents, this work introduces newly developed apparatus for locomotion research in rodents. The key concept is to allow maximal freedom of voluntary movement of the animal while providing forceful interaction when necessary. Advantages and challenges of the proposed machine over other existing designs are discussed. Design and implementation issues are presented and discussed, emphasizing their impact on free, voluntary, movement of the animal. A live-animal experiment was conducted to verify the design principles. Unconstrained natural movement of the animal was compared with movement with the overground robot attached. The compact, overground design and backdrivable implementation of this robot allow novel experiments that involve open-space, free (or interactive) locomotion of the animal.by Yun Seong Song.Ph.D
