    More-than-words: Reconceptualising Two-year-old Children’s Onto-epistemologies Through Improvisation and the Temporal Arts

    This thesis project takes place at a time of increasing focus upon two-year-old children and the words they speak. On the one hand there is a mounting pressure, driven by the school readiness agenda, to make children talk as early as possible. On the other hand, there is an increased interest in understanding children’s communication in order to create effective pedagogies. More-than-words (MTW) examines an improvised art-education practice that combines heterogenous elements: sound, movement and materials (such as silk, string, light) to create encounters for young children, educators and practitioners from diverse backgrounds. During these encounters, adults adopt a practice of stripping back their words in order to tune into the polyphonic ways that children are becoming-with the world. For this research-creation, two MTW sessions for two-year-old children and their carers took place in a specially created installation. These sessions were filmed on a 360˚ camera, nursery school iPad and on a specially made child-friendly Toddler-cam (Tcam) that rolled around in the installation-event with the children. Through using the frameless technology of 360˚ film, I hoped to make tangible the relation and movement of an emergent and improvised happening and the way in which young children operate fluidly through multiple modes. Travelling with posthuman, Deleuzio-Guattarian and feminist vital material philosophy, I wander and wonder speculatively through practice, memory, and film data as a bag lady, a Haraway-ian writer/artist/researcher-creator who resists the story of the wordless child as lacking and tragic; the story that positions the word as heroic. Instead, through returning to the uncertainty of improvisation, I attempt to tune into the savage, untamed and wild music of young children’s animistic onto-epistemologies

    Towards a centralized multicore automotive system

    Today’s automotive systems are inundated with embedded electronics to host chassis, powertrain, infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems, and other modern vehicle functions. As many as 100 embedded microcontrollers execute hundreds of millions of lines of code in a single vehicle. To control the increasing complexity in vehicle electronics and services, automakers are planning to consolidate different on-board automotive functions as software tasks on centralized multicore hardware platforms. However, these vehicle software services have different and contrasting timing, safety, and security requirements. Existing vehicle operating systems are ill-equipped to provide all the required service guarantees on a single machine. A centralized automotive system aims to tackle this by assigning software tasks to multiple criticality domains or levels according to their consequences of failures, or international safety standards like ISO 26262. This research investigates several emerging challenges in time-critical systems for a centralized multicore automotive platform and proposes a novel vehicle operating system framework to address them. This thesis first introduces an integrated vehicle management system (VMS), called DriveOS™, for a PC-class multicore hardware platform. Its separation kernel design enables temporal and spatial isolation among critical and non-critical vehicle services in different domains on the same machine. Time- and safety-critical vehicle functions are implemented in a sandboxed Real-time Operating System (OS) domain, and non-critical software is developed in a sandboxed general-purpose OS (e.g., Linux, Android) domain. To leverage the advantages of model-driven vehicle function development, DriveOS provides a multi-domain application framework in Simulink. This thesis also presents a real-time task pipeline scheduling algorithm in multiprocessors for communication between connected vehicle services with end-to-end guarantees. The benefits and performance of the overall automotive system framework are demonstrated with hardware-in-the-loop testing using real-world applications, car datasets and simulated benchmarks, and with an early-stage deployment in a production-grade luxury electric vehicle

    La epilepsia es una enfermedad crónica con un enorme impacto sociosanitario. Aunque en la actualidad se dispone de una gran cantidad de fármacos antiepilépticos y de otros tratamientos más selectivos como la cirugía o la estimulación cerebral, un porcentaje considerable de pacientes no están controlados y continúan teniendo crisis epilépticas. Estas personas suelen vivir condicionadas por la posibilidad de un ataque epiléptico y sus posibles consecuencias, como accidentes, lesiones o incluso la muerte súbita inexplicable. En este contexto, un dispositivo capaz de monitorizar el estado de salud y avisar de un posible ataque epiléptico contribuiría a mejorar la calidad de vida de estas personas. La presente Tesis Doctoral se centra en el desarrollo de un novedoso sistema de monitorización ambulatoria que permita identificar y predecir los ataques epilépticos. Dicho sistema está compuesto por diferentes sensores capaces de registrar de forma sincronizada diferentes señales biomédicas. Mediante técnicas de aprendizaje automático supervisado, se han desarrollado diferentes modelos predictivos capaces de clasificar el estado de la persona epiléptica en normal, preictal (antes de la crisis) e ictal (crisis)
