    Towards Comfortable Cycling: A Practical Approach to Monitor the Conditions in Cycling Paths

    This is a no brainer. Using bicycles to commute is the most sustainable form of transport, is the least expensive to use and are pollution-free. Towns and cities have to be made bicycle-friendly to encourage their wide usage. Therefore, cycling paths should be more convenient, comfortable, and safe to ride. This paper investigates a smartphone application, which passively monitors the road conditions during cyclists ride. To overcome the problems of monitoring roads, we present novel algorithms that sense the rough cycling paths and locate road bumps. Each event is detected in real time to improve the user friendliness of the application. Cyclists may keep their smartphones at any random orientation and placement. Moreover, different smartphones sense the same incident dissimilarly and hence report discrepant sensor values. We further address the aforementioned difficulties that limit such crowd-sourcing application.     Speed Bump Detection Using Accelerometric Features: A Genetic Algorithm Approach

Abnormalities in the road, such as manholes and potholes, can cause accidents when not identified by the drivers. Furthermore, human-induced abnormalities, such as speed bumps, could also cause accidents. In addition, while said obstacles ought to be signalized according to specific road regulation, they are not always correctly labeled. Therefore, we developed a novel method for the detection of road abnormalities (i.e., speed bumps). This method makes use of a gyro, an accelerometer, and a GPS sensor mounted in a car. After having the vehicle cruise through several streets, data is retrieved from the sensors. Then, using a cross-validation strategy, a genetic algorithm is used to find a logistic model that accurately detects road abnormalities. The proposed model had an accuracy of 0.9714 in a blind evaluation, with a false positive rate smaller than 0.018, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.9784.     Improving Displacement Measurement for Evaluating Longitudinal Road Profiles

In this application, the HWPM model is designed for profilers which utilize a laser displacement sensor with an accelerometer for detecting surface irregularities. The process of converting acceleration to displacement by double integration (which is used in most rofilers) is error-prone, and although there are techniques to minimize the effect of this error, this paper proposes a novel approach for improving the generated road profile results. The technique amends the vertical displacement derived from the accelerometer samples, by using data from the laser displacement sensor as a reference. The vehicle based profiler developed for this experiment (which uses the HWPM model) shows a huge improvement in detected longitudinal irregularities when compared with pre-processed results, and uses a 3-m rolling straight edge as a benchmark.Peer reviewe

    Automated Productivity Models for Earthmoving Operations

    Earthmoving operations have significant importance, particularly for civil infrastructure projects. The performance of these operations should be monitored regularly to support timely recognition of undesirable productivity variances. Although productivity assessment occupies high importance in earthmoving operations, it does not provide sufficient information to assist project managers in taking the necessary actions in a timely manner. Assessment only is not capable of identifying problems encountered in these operations and their causes. Many studies recognized conditions and related factors that influence productivity of earthmoving operations. These conditions are mainly project-specific and vary from one project to another. Most of reported work in the literature focused on assessment rather than analysis of productivity. This study presents three integrated models that automate productivity measurement and analysis processes with capabilities to detect different adverse conditions that influence the productivity of earthmoving operations. The models exploit innovations in wireless and remote sensing technologies to provide project managers, contractors, and decision makers with a near-real-time automated productivity measurement and analysis. The developed models account for various uncertainties associated with earthmoving projects. The first model introduces a fuzzy-based standardization for customizing the configuration of onsite data acquisition systems for earthmoving operations. While the second model consists of two interrelated modules. The first is a customized automated data acquisition module, where a variety of sensors, smart boards, and microcontrollers are used to automate the data acquisition process. This module encompasses onsite fixed unit and a set of portable units attached to each truck used in the earthmoving fleet. The fixed unit is a communication gateway (Meshlium®), which has integrated MySQL database with data processing capabilities. Each mobile unit consists of a microcontroller equipped with a smart board that hosts a GPS module as well as a number of sensors such as accelerometer, temperature and humidity sensors, load cell and automated weather station. The second is a productivity measurement and analysis module, which processes and analyzes the data collected automatically in the first module. It automates the analysis process using data mining and machine learning techniques; providing a near-real-time web-based visualized representation of measurement and analysis outcomes. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to model productivity losses due to the existence of different influencing conditions. Laboratory and field work was conducted in the development and validation processes of the developed models. The work encompassed field and scaled laboratory experiments. The laboratory experiments were conducted in an open to sky terrace to allow for a reliable access to GPS satellites. Also, to make a direct connection between the data communication gateway (Meshlium®), initially installed on a PC computer to observe the received data latency. The laboratory experiments unitized 1:24 scaled loader and dumping truck to simulate loading, hauling and dumping operations. The truck was instrumented with the microcontroller equipped with an accelerometer, GPS module, load cell, and soil water content sensor. Thirty simulated earthmoving cycles were conducted using the scaled equipment. The collected data was recorded in a micro secure digital (SD) card in a comma separated value (CSV) format. The field work was carried out in the city of Saint-Laurent, Montreal, Quebec, Canada using a passenger vehicle to mimic the hauling truck operational modes. Fifteen Field simulated earthmoving cycles were performed. In this work two roads with different surface conditions, but of equal length (1150 m) represented the haul and return roads. These two roads were selected to validate the developed road condition analysis algorithm and to study the model’s capability in determining the consequences of adverse road conditions on the haul and return durations and thus on the tuck and fleet productivity. The data collected from the lab experiments and field work was used as input for the developed model. The developed model has shown perfect recognition of the state of truck throughout the fifteen field simulated earthmoving cycles. The developed road condition analysis algorithm has demonstrated an accuracy of 83.3% and 82.6% in recognizing road bumps and potholes, respectively. Also, the results indicated tiny variances in measuring the durations compared with actual durations using time laps displayed on a smart cell telephone; with an average invalidity percentage AIP% of 1.89 % and 1.33% for the joint hauling and return duration and total cycle duration, respectively

    SenSys: A Smartphone-Based Framework for ITS applications

    Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) use different methods to collect and process traffic data. Conventional techniques suffer from different challenges, like the high installation and maintenance cost, connectivity and communication problems, and the limited set of data. The recent massive spread of smartphones among drivers encouraged the ITS community to use them to solve ITS challenges. Using smartphones in ITS is gaining an increasing interest among researchers and developers. Typically, the set of sensors that comes with smartphones is utilized to develop tools and services in order to enhance safety and driving experience. GPS, cameras, Bluetooth, inertial sensors and other embedded sensors are used to detect and analyze drivers\u27 behavior and vehicles\u27 motion. The use of smartphones made the data collection process easier because of their availability among drivers, the set of different sensors, the computation ability, and the low installation and maintenance cost. On the other hand, different smartphones sensors have diverse characteristics and accuracy and each one of them needs special fusion, processing, and filtration methods to generate more stable and accurate data. Using smartphones in ITS faces different challenges like inaccurate readings, weak GPS reception, noisy sensors and unaligned readings.These challenges waste researchers and developers time and effort, and they prevent them from building accurate ITS applications. This work proposes SenSys a smartphone framework that collects and processes traffic data and then analyzes and extracts vehicle dynamics and vehicle activities which can be used by developers and researchers to create their navigation, communication, and safety ITS applications. SenSys framework fuses and filters smartphone\u27s sensors readings which result in enhancing the accuracy of tracking and analyzing various vehicle dynamics such as vehicle\u27s stops, lane changes, turn detection, and accurate vehicle speed calculation that, in turn, will enable development of new ITS applications and services
