Considering the increasing of the number cars on the roads, the rate of road accident has also increased with many people died or sustained serious injuries in a road  accident. Increasing the phenomenon of road accident frequency, a study on the factors that may be associated with the occurrence of the accident was conducted. This paper also discussed about road accident prevention method based on the factors studied. The study of this paper can provide forceful data analysis support for the road traffic safety related research. Keywords: road accident; accident prevention; road safety

Every year road accident in Malaysia is kept rising, especially road accidents occur in between a collision with passenger cars, other motorcycles and single-motorcycle accidents. In early 2016, Johor has been mentioned as the highest ranking hazardous road accident especially federal roads. However, the problem road accident on hazardous road still unsolved even though others research has been done. This study using a new method design consistency and the accident prediction model to decreasing road accidents from occurring at hazardous road locations. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of accidents between motorcycles and cars on select segments Federal route 050 (Jalan Kluang – Ayer Itam – Batu Pahat) and Federal route 023 (Jalan Muar – Tangkak). These studies were related a geometry elements of access point, median, shoulder width, lane width and continuous speed of motorcycle and cars to determine value design consistency model (IC) and threshold. The data collections were GPS DG-200 to collect continuous speed data, the geometry data collection during the site visit and police data. The models were developed based on the new method of speed profiles, analysis to determine the value of the index integrated design consistency model (IC) between motorcycles and cars. The result showed similarities the value of design consistency model with hazardous locations. Hence, the developed accident prediction model was related road design consistency models and accident rates to evaluate the impact of design consistency with road safety. Therefore, based on results and analysis, some discussions of geometric elements based on design consistency result and relationship with road accident occurs between motorcycles and cars at hazardous road locations and some of recommended are provided such as improve widen shoulder for inadequate shoulder, increase enforcement for illegal parking and others

The number road accident kept rising in every year in Malaysia. In early 2016, Johor has been mentioned as the among highest-ranking road accident at hazard road locations. The main accidents occur are a road accident with passenger cars, road accident with other motorcycles and single-motorcycle road accidents. Furthermore, the problem road accident on hazard road location are still unsolved, especially for main road accident types of vehicle; motorcycles and cars. The study location segments were selected at Johor Federal Route 50; KM1- KM5. Therefore, this study using an accident prediction model by relating integrated design consistency model, through a comprehensive speed characteristic using a global positioning system and based on an operating profile to develop a continuous speed profile between motorcycles and cars and to determine design consistency models. Poisson model is used to relate road design consistency models and accident rates to evaluate the impact of design consistency with road safety

This paper introduces about the study of temporal pattern properties of road accident that occur at Kedah state. Data sources of the road accident was obtaining from police department who consists of a data that describing a few factor such as types of accident, time and date of accident and address where it happened. Next, data visualization and analysis of the properties of temporal pattern road accident can be done using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. Using this technology, it allows spatial analysis and spatial statistic that rely on geographically referenced data to be done so that better interpretation about the temporal pattern road accident can be achieved. The use of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology can provides the capability for capturing, storing, querying, analyzing and displaying geospatial data. Besides that, GIS also stand out for their ability of managing the geospatial data. Generally, geospatial data was function as to locate spatial features on the Earth’s surface and it can be done either by using a geographic or a projected coordinate system. In this paper, several GIS analysis methods had been used as to get a clear view about the properties of spatial temporal pattern of road accident at Kedah state. Hotspot analysis of Getis-Ord Gi* had been used as to determine the hotspot area of road accident cases occurrences. This may reflect with the result show the hot and cold area represent the frequency of it happened. Spatial analyst by using point density was performed in order to shows the relation between the effect of road accident on types of fatality based on types of road. Many previous study introduce GIS only for determination of the hotspot area but on this study it tells more about an analysis of road accident based on its temporal pattern properties

High-Resolution Road Vehicle Collision Prediction for the City of Montreal

Road accidents are an important issue of our modern societies, responsible for millions of deaths and injuries every year in the world. In Quebec only, in 2018, road accidents are responsible for 359 deaths and 33 thousands of injuries. In this paper, we show how one can leverage open datasets of a city like Montreal, Canada, to create high-resolution accident prediction models, using big data analytics. Compared to other studies in road accident prediction, we have a much higher prediction resolution, i.e., our models predict the occurrence of an accident within an hour, on road segments defined by intersections. Such models could be used in the context of road accident prevention, but also to identify key factors that can lead to a road accident, and consequently, help elaborate new policies. We tested various machine learning methods to deal with the severe class imbalance inherent to accident prediction problems. In particular, we implemented the Balanced Random Forest algorithm, a variant of the Random Forest machine learning algorithm in Apache Spark. Interestingly, we found that in our case, Balanced Random Forest does not perform significantly better than Random Forest. Experimental results show that 85% of road vehicle collisions are detected by our model with a false positive rate of 13%. The examples identified as positive are likely to correspond to high-risk situations. In addition, we identify the most important predictors of vehicle collisions for the area of Montreal: the count of accidents on the same road segment during previous years, the temperature, the day of the year, the hour and the visibility

This paper reports on some aspects of the findings of a recent piece of research into road traffic accidents in Yemen. The aim of the research was to provide a better understanding of road accident problems in Yemen by investigating its real dimensions. This includes the identification of the shortcomings in road accident data and to develop a method that can be adopted to adjust (correct) the official data. Two field surveys were employed to check the shortcomings in the official records. The main findings obtained are presented as follows: •The actual size of the road accident problem in Yemen is much greater than it appears in the official figures. In 1993, the registered accidents accounted for only about 13.3% of the estimated accidents and injuries accounted for only about 30% of the estimated injuries.•The registered fatalities account for only about 48% of the actual number of fatalities using the 30 days definition. The 30 days definition for road accident fatalities is not adopted in Yemen and the relevant agencies are not implementing this definition properly.•Methods for adjusting road accident data were adopted in this study. It is believed that this method can adjust the road accident data with an acceptable degree of satisfaction. It is hoped that the findings of this research will help both researchers in their future work and decision makers in the field of road safety to encourage suitable safety programmes to be adopted which are consistent with the actual size of the problem. Knowledge of the true picture of the road accident problem will be useful for the purpose of negotiating adequate funding for road safety activities.Estimating the actual percentage of unreported data in road accidents and casualties is very useful for any further research in road accidents and safety in Yemen. It will also help in dealing with official data and results from previous studies

Recommendations for establishing Pan European transparent and independent road accident investigations

    Get PDF
A set of recommendations for pan-European transparent and independent road accident investigations has been developed by the SafetyNet project. The aim of these recommendations is to pave the way for future EU scale accident investigation activities by setting out the necessary steps for establishing safety oriented road accident investigations in Member States. This can be seen as the start of the process for establishing road accident investigations throughout Europe which operate according to a common methodology. The recommendations propose a European Safety Oriented Road Accident Investigation Programme which sets out the procedures that need to be put in place to investigate a sample of every day road accidents. They address four sets of issues; institutional addressing the characteristics of the programme; operational describing the conditions under which data is collected; data storage and protection; and reports, countermeasures and the dissemination of data
