    Development and integration of Honeywell’s One-Wireless network

    The purpose of this project has been to develop upon the Honeywell One-Wireless network in the Murdoch University Pilot Plant and integrate it into the Distributed Control System. This will give future students exposure to developing process control schemes around industrial wireless technology in a small plant setting. Industrial Wireless is still on the cutting edge of technology and it will challenge the status quo in Industry with its many advantages. A brief review of Industrial wireless technology has been included in this thesis report to provide the reader a background to the communications technology. Also included is Honeywell’s One-Wireless Network solution which was used in this project. There, where significant challenges in getting the network operational, and as a result a systematic troubleshooting process was followed. Once the network was operational additional wireless instruments where added to expand the network and set up in the system. From here the One-Wireless network was integrated into the Distributive Control System which operates the pilot plant, this was done using Modbus TCP/IP. To determine the effectiveness of the network a post Radio Frequency assessment was carried out to determine the impact of the network and ensure that it was following best practices. Relevant documentation on the network was developed as a handover for future students to build upon the work carried out

    Remote Weather Information Systems (RWIS) are an important part of deciding maintenance activities and scheduling. However, the cost of RWIS limits the number of systems that can be deployed. Because of the lack of power and the high power budget of commonly used systems, some locations are not suitable for RWIS even though the information would be of great value. This project focuses on the development of a low-cost, low-power RWIS that is suitable for remote locations and allows for a higher density of RWIS. The system produced under this study uses less than 10 watts of power and costs less than $10,000 for the basic system. The system has performed well in Fairbanks, Alaska, over two winters. In addition, the system has been fully integrated into the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities RWIS network.WeatherCloud Inc

    A feasibility of incorporating PDAs into problem-based learning approach to medical education: An overview

    This paper explores the feasibility of incorporating personal digital assistants (PDAs) into problem-based learning (PBL) approach in medical education. Method: Database searched was conducted by using relevant keywords. From 1,317 relevant journal articles, 489 articles (37%) are related to the use of PDAs in medical settings, medical education and aspects regarding PDA use in both areas. The appropriate materials were input into NVivo 7 for analysis. Results: Five PDA functionalities (clinical-log, reference, personal information management, communication and special functions) and 8 factors (data security and information privacy, interoperability, scalability and network connectivity, education and training, technology comfort, electromagnetic interference, social acceptance, and maintenance and support) for the incorporation of PDAs into PBL-medical curriculum were identified. Conclusion: A little is known whether PDAs can be incorporate at the beginning of medical study in particular to a PBL-medical curriculum at the University of Wollongong (UOW). Therefore the further study is to determine whether PDAs, their functionalities and influence factors are feasible to deploy into medical education and how possible they can be incorporated to medical education at the UOW

    BYOD-Insure: A Security Assessment Model for Enterprise BYOD

    As organizations continue allowing employees to use their personal mobile devices to access the organizations’ networks and the corporate data, a phenomenon called ‘Bring Your Own Device’ or BYOD, proper security controls need to be adopted not only to secure the corporate data but also to protect the organizations against possible litigation problems. Until recently, current literature and research have been focused on specific areas or solutions regarding BYOD. The information associated with BYOD security issues in the areas of Management, IT, Users and Mobile Device Solutions is fragmented. This research is based on a need to provide a holistic approach to securing BYOD environments. This dissertation puts forth design science research methods to develop a comprehensive security assessment model, BYOD-Insure, to assess the security posture of an organization’s BYOD environment. BYOD-Insure aims to identify security vulnerabilities in organizations that allow (or are planning to adopt) BYODs. The main questions this research aims to answer are: 1) In order to protect the enterprise and its corporate data, how can an organization identify and mitigate the security risks associated with BYOD? 2) How can a holistic approach to security strengthen the security posture of BYOD environments? BYOD-Insure is composed of 5 modules that, in tandem, use a holistic approach to assess the security posture of the four domains of BYOD environments: assessment of management (BYOD-Insure-Management), assessment of IT (BYOD-Insure-IT), assessment of users’ behavior/security (BYOD-Insure-User), and assessment of the mobile device security adopted by the organization (BYOD-Insure-Mobile). The combined results of the 4 domains provide the overall security posture of the organization (BYOD-Insure-Global). The evaluation process for this model is based on a design science method for artifact evaluation. For BYOD-Insure, this process involves the use of descriptive scenarios to describe different types of BYOD security postures. This entails a detailed description of scenarios that depict low, moderate and high security postures with respect to BYOD. The results, for a particular organization, show the security controls that need to be strengthened, and the safeguards recommended. The BYOD-Insure assessment model helps answer the research questions raised in this study

The most important impact of the work is an increasing network productivity and user experience as a result of creation and deploy a monitoring software.O trabalho descrito no âmbito desta dissertação incide sobre a infraestrutura TI e, em particular, sobre as redes de computadores da KubSAU e do IPB. Além disso, descreve-se um sistema de gestão integrada de redes, designada “NetGlance NMS”, desenvolvido para o Departamento de Administração de Sistemas da KubSAU. O objetivo do trabalho é desenvolver uma ferramenta para otimizar a gestão da estrutura de comunicações das duas instituições.     Survey of End-to-End Mobile Network Measurement Testbeds, Tools, and Services

    Mobile (cellular) networks enable innovation, but can also stifle it and lead to user frustration when network performance falls below expectations. As mobile networks become the predominant method of Internet access, developer, research, network operator, and regulatory communities have taken an increased interest in measuring end-to-end mobile network performance to, among other goals, minimize negative impact on application responsiveness. In this survey we examine current approaches to end-to-end mobile network performance measurement, diagnosis, and application prototyping. We compare available tools and their shortcomings with respect to the needs of researchers, developers, regulators, and the public.     Development and Flight Testing of a Wireless Avionics Network Based on the IEEE 802.11 Protocols

    This report describes the development and flight testing of the IEEE 802.11 protocol-based Wireless Flight Management System (WFMS) using low cost Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment and software. The unlicensed spectrum allocation in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands by the FCC has encouraged the industry to develop new standards for short-range communication that are commercially viable. This has resulted in new short-range communication technologies like Bluetooth and the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The new modulation techniques developed for wireless communication support wired equivalent data rates. The commercial success of these technologies and their wide market adaptation has resulted in reduced costs for the devices that support these technologies. Applications of wireless technology in aerospace engineering are vast, including development, testing, manufacturing, prognostics health management, ground support equipment and active control. The high data rates offered by technologies like WLAN (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g) are sufficient to implement critical and essential data applications of avionics systems. A wireless avionics network based on IEEE 802.11a/b/g protocols will reduce the complexity and cost of installation and maintenance of the avionics system when compared to the existing wired system. The proposed WFMS imitates the flight management system of any commercial aircraft in terms of functionality. It utilizes a radio frequency for the transmission of the sensor data to the Cockpit Display Unit (CDU) and the Flight Management Computer (FMC). WFMS consists of a FMC, data acquisition node, sensor node and a user interface node. The FMC and the data acquisition nodes are built using PC/104 standard modules. The sensor node consists of an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) and a GPS integrated with a serial device server. The user interface node is installed with moving map software which receives data from the AHRS and GPS to display flight information including topographic maps, attitude, heading, velocity, et cetera. This thesis demonstrates the performance evaluation of the WFMS both on the ground and in flight, and its advantages over a wired system. This thesis focuses on the evaluation of IEEE 802.11a/b/g protocols for avionics application. Efforts taken to calibrate the available bandwidth of the WLAN network at different operating conditions and varying ranges using different network analysis tools are explained briefly. Considerable research on issues like electromagnetic interference and network security critical to the development of a wireless network for avionics has also been done. This report covers different aspects of the implementation of wireless technology for aircraft systems. This work is a successful starting point for the new fly-by-wireless concept with extensions to active wireless flight control
