An extensible product structure model for product lifecycle management in the make-to-order environment
This paper presents a product structure model with a semantic representation technique that make the product structure extensible for developing product lifecycle management (PLM) systems that is flexible for make-to-order environment. In the make-to-order business context, each product could have a number of variants with slightly different constitutions to fulfill different customer requirements. All the variants of a family have common characteristics and each variant has its specific features. A master-variant pattern is proposed for building the product structure model to explicitly represent common characteristics and specific features of individual variants. The model is capable of enforcing the consistency of a family structure and its variant structure, supporting multiple product views, and facilitating the business processes. A semantic representation technique is developed that enables entity attributes to be defined and entities to be categorized in a neutral and semantic format. As a result, entity attributes and entity categorization can be redefined easily with its configurable capability for different requirements of the PLM systems. An XML-based language is developed for semantically representing entities and entity categories. A prototype as a proof-of-concept system is presented to illustrate the capability of the proposed extensible product structure model
Business process modelling and visualisation to support e-government decision making: Business/IS alignment
© 2017 Springer-Verlag. The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-57487-5_4.Alignment between business and information systems plays a vital role in the formation of dependent relationships between different departments in a government organization and the process of alignment can be improved by developing an information system (IS) according to the stakeholdersâ expectations. However, establishing strong alignment in the context of the eGovernment environment can be difficult. It is widely accepted that business processes in the government environment plays a pivotal role in capturing the details of IS requirements. This paper presents a method of business process modelling through UML which can help to visualise and capture the IS requirements for the system development. A series of UML models have been developed and discussed. A case study on patient visits to a healthcare clinic in the context of eGovernment has been used to validate the models
Toward Semantics-aware Representation of Digital Business Processes
An extended enterprise (EE) can be described by a set of models each representing a specific aspect of the EE.
Aspects can for example be the process flow or the value description. However, different models are done by different
people, which may use different terminology, which prevents relating the models. Therefore, we propose a framework
consisting of process flow and value aspects and in addition a static domain model with structural and relational
components. Further, we outline the usage of the static domain model to enable relating the different aspects
Generic PLM system for SMEs: Application to an equipment manufacturer
For several years, digital engineering has increasingly taken a more important place in the strategic issues of mechanical engineering companies. Our proposition is an approach that enables technical data to be managed and used throughout the product life-cycle. This approach aims to provide assistance for costing, development and industrialization of the product, and for the capitalization, the reuse and the extension of fundamental knowledge. This approach has been experimented within several companies. This paper presents the case in a company environment that designs and produces families of ship equipment parts
A characteristics framework for Semantic Information Systems Standards
Semantic Information Systems (IS) Standards play a critical role in the development of the networked economy. While their importance is undoubted by all stakeholdersâsuch as businesses, policy makers, researchers, developersâthe current state of research leaves a number of questions unaddressed. Terminological confusion exists around the notions of âbusiness semanticsâ, âbusiness-to-business interoperabilityâ, and âinteroperability standardsâ amongst others. And, moreover, a comprehensive understanding about the characteristics of Semantic IS Standards is missing. The paper addresses this gap in literature by developing a characteristics framework for Semantic IS Standards. Two case studies are used to check the applicability of the framework in a âreal-lifeâ context. The framework lays the foundation for future research in an important field of the IS discipline and supports practitioners in their efforts to analyze, compare, and evaluate Semantic IS Standard
Digital Preservation, Archival Science and Methodological Foundations for Digital Libraries
Digital libraries, whether commercial, public or personal, lie at the heart of the information society. Yet, research into their longâterm viability and the meaningful accessibility of their contents remains in its infancy. In general, as we have pointed out elsewhere, âafter more
than twenty years of research in digital curation and preservation the actual theories, methods and technologies that can either foster or ensure digital longevity remain
startlingly limited.â Research led by DigitalPreservationEurope (DPE) and the Digital
Preservation Cluster of DELOS has allowed us to refine the key research challenges â theoretical, methodological and technological â that need attention by researchers in digital libraries during the coming five to ten years, if we are to ensure that the materials held in our emerging digital libraries are to remain sustainable, authentic, accessible and understandable over time. Building on this work and taking the theoretical framework of archival science as bedrock, this paper investigates digital preservation and its foundational role if digital libraries are to have longâterm viability at the centre of the
global information society.
A Model-Based Approach for the Management of Electronic Invoices
The globalized market pushes companies to expand their business boundaries to a whole new level. In order to efficiently support this environment, business transactions must be executed over the Internet. However, there are several factors complicating this process, such as the current state of electronic invoices. Electronic invoice adoption is not widespread because of the current format fragmentation originated by national regulations. In this paper we present an approach based on Model-Driven Engineering techniques and abstractions for supporting the core functions of invoice management systems. We compare our solution with the traditional implementations and try to analyze the advantages MDE can bring to this specific domain
