    Integrated Energy Management of a Plug-in Electric Vehicle in Residential Distribution Systems with Renewables

    International audienceAccording to innovation in grid connected transportation industry and with ever increasing concerns on environmental issues and clean energy, electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with low noise, zero emission, and high efficiency have attracted more and more attention of researchers, governments and industries, they are becoming the most likely fleets to replace gasoline vehicles in future power systems. In addition to the approved advantages for transportation, EVs have the potential to provide other benefits within the connected residential distribution to micro-grids and smart grids as part of a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system, knowing that in future systems residential distribution can be seen as an energy resource with decentralized and autonomous decisions in the energy management called smart house or prosumer. They can participate effectively in helping to balance supply and demand by valley filling and peak shaving. The EV battery can be charged during low demand and the stored power can be fed power back into the micro-grid during high-demand periods, providing a spinning reserve to dump short power demand changes. V2G may also be used to buffer renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic generators, by storing excess energy produced during illumination periods, and feeding it back into the grid during high-load periods, thus effectively stabilizing the intermittency of solar power.     This book is a collection of papers covering various aspects of the optimal control of power and energy production from renewable resources (wind, PV, biomass, hydrogen, etc.). In particular, attention is focused both on the optimal control of new technologies and on their integration in buildings, microgrids, and energy markets. The examples presented in this book are among the most promising technologies for satisfying an increasing share of thermal and electrical demands with renewable sources: from solar cooling plants to offshore wind generation; hybrid plants, combining traditional and renewable sources, are also considered, as well as traditional and innovative storage systems.     The role of off-board EV battery chargers in smart homes and smart grids: operation with renewables and energy storage systems

    Concerns about climate changes and environmental air pollution are leading to the adoption of new technologies for transportation, mainly based on vehicle electrification and the interaction with smart grids, and also with the introduction of renewable energy sources (RES) accompanied by energy storage systems (ESS). For these three fundamental pillars, new power electronics technologies are emerging to transform the electrical power grid, targeting a flexible and collaborative operation. As a distinctive factor, the vehicle electrification has stimulated the presence of new technologies in terms of power management, both for smart homes and smart grids. As the title indicates, this book chapter focuses on the role of off-board EV battery chargers in terms of operation modes and contextualization for smart homes and smart grids in terms of opportunities. Based on a review of on-board and off-board EV battery charging systems (EV-BCS), this chapter focus on the off-board EV-BCS framed with RES and ESS as a dominant system in future smart homes. Contextualizing these aspects, three distinct cases are considered: (1) An ac smart home using separate power converters, according to the considered technologies; (2) A hybrid ac and dc smart home with an off-board EV-BCS interfacing RES and ESS, and with the electrical appliances plugged-in to the ac power grid; (3) A dc smart home using a unified 2 off-board EV-BCS with a single interface for the electrical power grid, and with multiple dc interfaces (RES, ESS, and electrical appliances). The results for each case are obtained in terms of efficiency and power quality, demonstrating that the off-board EV-BCS, as a unified structure for smart homes, presents better results. Besides, the off-board EV-BCS can also be used as an important asset for the smart grid, even when the EV is not plugged-in at the smart home.(undefined

    It's About How and Where We Build: Connecting Energy and Smart Growth

    In recent years, energy issues have become a growing concern for Americans. Largely missing from present energy discussions, however, is the role that land-use practices have on energy consumption and the use of alternative energy resources. By efficiently locating development, we can reduce the amount of energy needed for transportation and for other infrastructure as compared with spread-out, suburban development. Moreover, by including greater use of energy efficient design, these "smart growth" land-use practices could become even smarter -- and better achieve their goals of environmental protection, economic prosperity, and community livability. The smart growth land-use and energy efficiency movements are intrinsically linked, yet these two fields have mostly operated in separate worlds. Greater coordination between these two professions is warranted, yet substantial barriers exist. A recent survey reveals that planners' technical knowledge of energy issues is limited, as is their inclusion of energy factors in comprehensive planning, zoning, and development review. Heightened concern about foreign oil dependence, climate change, and the other ill effects of fossil fuel usage makes the energy-land-use collaboration especially important.
