    Approximate Computing Survey, Part I: Terminology and Software & Hardware Approximation Techniques

    The rapid growth of demanding applications in domains applying multimedia processing and machine learning has marked a new era for edge and cloud computing. These applications involve massive data and compute-intensive tasks, and thus, typical computing paradigms in embedded systems and data centers are stressed to meet the worldwide demand for high performance. Concurrently, the landscape of the semiconductor field in the last 15 years has constituted power as a first-class design concern. As a result, the community of computing systems is forced to find alternative design approaches to facilitate high-performance and/or power-efficient computing. Among the examined solutions, Approximate Computing has attracted an ever-increasing interest, with research works applying approximations across the entire traditional computing stack, i.e., at software, hardware, and architectural levels. Over the last decade, there is a plethora of approximation techniques in software (programs, frameworks, compilers, runtimes, languages), hardware (circuits, accelerators), and architectures (processors, memories). The current article is Part I of our comprehensive survey on Approximate Computing, and it reviews its motivation, terminology and principles, as well it classifies and presents the technical details of the state-of-the-art software and hardware approximation techniques.Comment: Under Review at ACM Computing Survey

    TeamSTEPPS and Organizational Culture

    Patient safety issues remain despite several strategies developed for their deterrence. While many safety initiatives bring about improvement, they are repeatedly unsustainable and short-lived. The index hospital’s goal was to build an organizational culture within a groundwork that improves teamwork and continuing healthcare team engagement. Teamwork influences the efficiency of patient care, patient safety, and clinical outcomes, as it has been identified as an approach for enhancing collaboration, decreasing medical errors, and building a culture of safety in healthcare. The facility implemented Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS), an evidence-based framework which was used for team training to produce valuable and needed changes, facilitating modification of organizational culture, increasing patient safety compliance, or solving particular issues. This study aimed to identify the correlation between TeamSTEPPS enactment and improved organizational culture in the ambulatory care nursing department of a New York City public hospital

    An Efficient Authentication Protocol for Smart Grid Communication Based on On-Chip-Error-Correcting Physical Unclonable Function

    Security has become a main concern for the smart grid to move from research and development to industry. The concept of security has usually referred to resistance to threats by an active or passive attacker. However, since smart meters (SMs) are often placed in unprotected areas, physical security has become one of the important security goals in the smart grid. Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) have been largely utilized for ensuring physical security in recent years, though their reliability has remained a major problem to be practically used in cryptographic applications. Although fuzzy extractors have been considered as a solution to solve the reliability problem of PUFs, they put a considerable computational cost to the resource-constrained SMs. To that end, we first propose an on-chip-error-correcting (OCEC) PUF that efficiently generates stable digits for the authentication process. Afterward, we introduce a lightweight authentication protocol between the SMs and neighborhood gateway (NG) based on the proposed PUF. The provable security analysis shows that not only the proposed protocol can stand secure in the Canetti-Krawczyk (CK) adversary model but also provides additional security features.     Organizational capacity is based upon internal relationships which exist within an organization with the goal of enhancing structure through the talents and competencies of its people. Although at times used by profit organizations as a means to strengthen company performance and assist with strategic planning, the use of capitalizing on the value of organizational capacity in nonprofits has been largely ignored. A study was undertaken to capture the essence of capacity building specifically for nonprofits. An appreciative inquiry process was utilized with favorable results toward assisting an organization to accomplish its mission of serving stakeholders effectively by building on the collaborative strengths, talents and skills of its human resources

    Filling the gaps in video transcoder deployment in the cloud

    Cloud-based deployment of content production and broadcast workflows has continued to disrupt the industry after the pandemic. The key tools required for unlocking cloud workflows, e.g., transcoding, metadata parsing, and streaming playback, are increasingly commoditized. However, as video traffic continues to increase there is a need to consider tools which offer opportunities for further bitrate/quality gains as well as those which facilitate cloud deployment. In this paper we consider preprocessing, rate/distortion optimisation and cloud cost prediction tools which are only just emerging from the research community. These tools are posed as part of the per-clip optimisation approach to transcoding which has been adopted by large streaming media processing entities but has yet to be made more widely available for the industry.Comment: Camera-ready version of BEIT Conference at NAB 202

    Bridging technology and educational psychology: an exploration of individual differences in technology-assisted language learning within an Algerian EFL setting

    The implementation of technology in language learning and teaching has a great influence onthe teaching and learning process as a whole and its impact on the learners’ psychological state seems of paramount significance, since it could be either an aid or a barrier to students’ academic performance. This thesis therefore explores individual learner differences in technology-assisted language learning (TALL) and when using educational technologies in higher education within an Algerian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. Although I initially intended to investigate the relationship between TALL and certain affective variables mainly motivation, anxiety, self-confidence, and learning styles inside the classroom, the collection and analysis of data shifted my focus to a holistic view of individual learner differences in TALL environments and when using educational technologies within and beyond the classroom. In an attempt to bridge technology and educational psychology, this ethnographic case study considers the nature of the impact of technology integration in language teaching and learning on the psychology of individual language learners inside and outside the classroom. The study considers the reality constructed by participants and reveals multiple and distinctive views about the relationship between the use of educational technologies in higher education and individual learner differences. It took place in a university in the north-west of Algeria and involved 27 main and secondary student and teacher participants. It consisted of focus-group discussions, follow-up discussions, teachers’ interviews, learners’ diaries, observation, and field notes. It was initially conducted within the classroom but gradually expanded to other settings outside the classroom depending on the availability of participants, their actions, and activities. The study indicates that the impact of technology integration in EFL learning on individual learner differences is both complex and dynamic. It is complex in the sense that it is shown in multiple aspects and reflected on the students and their differences. In addition to various positive and different negative influences of different technology uses and the different psychological reactions among students to the same technology scenario, the study reveals the unrecognised different manifestations of similar psychological traits in the same ELT technology scenario. It is also dynamic since it is characterised by constant change according to contextual approaches to and practical realities of technology integration in language teaching and learning in the setting, including discrepancies between students’ attitudes and teacher’ actions, mismatches between technological experiences inside and outside the classroom, local concerns and generalised beliefs about TALL in the context, and the rapid and unplanned shift to online educational delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The study may therefore be of interest, not only to Algerian teachers and students, but also to academics and institutions in other contexts through considering the complex and dynamic impact of TALL and technology integration at higher education on individual differences, and to academics in similar low-resource contexts by undertaking a context approach to technology integration
