The aim of this article is to analyze the impact of the level of Integration of Management Systems (IMS) over product and process Innovation Capabilities (IC), by considering the role of Open Innovation (OI) activities as a moderating effect of those relationships

A case study of a simultaneous integration in an SME: Implementation process and cost analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the simultaneous implementation of an integrated management system (IMS) in a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and its impact on costs. Design/methodology/approach Based on a case study, the paper presents and analyzes the implementation of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management system (MS) standards. The organization analyzed is an SME of the heating and air conditioning sector that had no MSs implemented (common in the sector) and decided to implement an IMS based on both function-specific MS standards (MSSs) and also achieving the separated certification. The analysis of expected and real costs is also presented. Findings The results show that a simultaneous integration is possible and the cost analysis evidences the improvement of the organization's efficiency. The certificates for both MSSs were also achieved. These findings help in confirming theoretical statement posed in the literature of the integration of MSs: integration strategy, methodology and level. The organization values this integrated implementation as very positive internally and externally, as this is one of the first organizations of the sector implementing and integrating the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Originality/value Although studies analyzing empirically the integration of MSs have been widely published in recent years, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this is one of the first papers analyzing the implementation of an IMS directly and analyzing its costs. In addition, this paper provides evidence that those organizations implementing integration later than others, can learn from the beginners' experience

Sustainable innovation through management systems integration

In an increasingly competitive world driven by fast changes, companies are challenged to pursue sustainable development through innovation. This matter has led to the discussion about how organizations manage to innovate in a way that they meet the demands of sustainability. Recently, researchers have identified the integration of management systems (IMS) as a potential practice to support both innovation and sustainability. This research aims to contribute to this field by exploring the relationship between IMS and sustainable innovation. European and Latin-American countries are included to contribute to the still scarce empirical evidence analyzing developed and less developed countries. Results suggest that IMS provides the managerial support to foster the adoption of cleaner production technologies. (...

THE IMPACT OF OPEN INNOVATION PRACTICES AND MODERATING EFFECT OF INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL NETWORKS ON INNOVATION PERFORMANCE OF LARGE FIRMS IN SRI LANKA

Innovation plays a prominent role in the contemporary world. It brings novel products and services to the market while exploring new ways of production, distribution, marketing and impacts all other aspects of organizations including human behaviour through hard as well as soft methods. Open innovation has been introduced as a new paradigm in innovation management. This study examines the impact of open innovation on innovation performance of the listed companies in Sri Lanka with the moderating effect of inter-organizational networks. Open innovation practices have been recognized in this study in two folds - as outside-in open innovation and inside-out open innovation Data were collected through a survey among 165 top-level managers of listed companies in Sri Lanka. The sample was selected using purposive and snowballing sampling methods. After testing the validity and the reliability of the instrument and collected data, simple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses. The study findings indicate that both outside-in open innovation and inside-out open innovation positively and significantly impact innovation performance.

A qualitative study on integrated management systems in a non-leading country in certifications

The aim of this study is to analyse the integration of management systems (MSs) in a country with low certifications number and growth rate and propose a research agenda towards improving the competitiveness of organisations that implement multiple MSs. The main research questions focus on the implementation process itself and the effect of low level of national certification to the integration process. To serve this research purpose, an exploratory research is designed in Greece (a country with relatively low certification counts and rates to the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management standards). A case study approach is employed to enable deeper and comprehensive reasoning. A cross-case analysis is presented to explore patterns, similarities and differences among organisations. Findings show that four out of five organisations analysed are integrating its MSs at different levels, the integration methodology applied is similar for all organisations but audits are the most dissimilar aspect. This study is one of the first that addresses MSs' integration in Greece exploring contingency factors

Openness and management systems integration: pursuing innovation benefits

    Get PDF
In a global and highly competitive environment, innovation is becoming riskier and costlier. Against this backdrop, firms are challenged to allocate their innovation resources efficiently to obtain the most benefits. To this end, integration of management systems and open innovation are internally- and externally-oriented managerial practices, respectively, that may foster innovation efficiency. However, they have been scarcely researched jointly. Based on longitudinal analyses of 220 Spanish firms, this study concludes that integrating management systems could foster innovation efficiency. Conversely, open innovation might hinder it. It is also evidenced that innovation efficiency is relevant to boost the sales productivity of new products

Is there a common pattern to integrate multiple management systems? A comparative analysis between organizations in Greece and Spain

The integration of management systems has been mainly studied considering the process within organizations and also comparing the implementation among organizations in the same country. Scarce research has been done comparing the process among organizations in different countries. Thus, the main aim of this study is to analyze and compare the implementation of the integrated management systems between organizations located in two countries, Greece and Spain, which have different ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification rates.A qualitative method has been applied. Six case studies are presented, three per country, to analyze the aspects of the process and comparing both implementation processes. All organizations have, at least, the ISO 9001 and the ISO 14001 management systems certification. The integration aspects studied are: strategy, methodology, level, audits, benefits and difficulties. The findings, although exploratory, show that the differing integration aspect among the analyzed organizations is the audits both internal and external. Greek organizations achieve higher levels of internal audits integration rather than external but these levels are lower compared to the audits integration level of the Spanish organizations. The other aspects analyzed followed a similar pattern, i.e., the majority of organizations implement first the quality management system and then the environmental, common elements analysis is the main methodology applied, the level reported show a tendency to full integration and benefits and difficulties highlighted are also similar. In addition to these results, aspects that could condition the process are proposed for future research, such as: certification rates, top management commitment, internalization of management systems, external auditors' experience, state support and their impact on sustainability. Implications for academia, organizations and certification bodies are also presented.Although the integration of management systems has been analyzed in the literature, this is one of the first studies comparing organizations in countries with different certification rates and proposing specific factors conditioning the process for future research. Total Quality Management (TQM) has become a crucial strategy for companies to maintain their position in the advent of globalization and market competition. At the same time, ISO9001 and innovation have been widely used by companies to gain continuous competitiveness and financial benefits. Unfortunately, limited studies have focused on the relationships between TQM, ISO9001, innovation and organizational performance (OP) in Iraqi manufacturing companies. This study aims to develop a new TQM framework towards improving organizational performance with mediating effects of ISO9001 and innovation in Iraqi manufacturing companies. To achieve this aim, the research approach adopted a quantitative method. A survey was used as the research method, and data was collected using a questionnaire. The respondents involved directors, managers, engineers and executives. One hundred eighty-three usable questionnaires were returned, yielding a 53.83% percent response rate. The findings of the survey were analysed using Partial Least Square (PLS) based on Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) software. The hypotheses were tested to establish the relationships between TQM Practices and OP as well as determine the mediating effects of innovation and ISO9001. The result indicated a significant relationship between TQM and OP (β= 0.468, p0.01). It is found that innovation gives a positive relationship between TQM practices and OP as a mediator, whilst the ISO9001 implementation was not supporting to the relationship between TQM practices and OP. The results of this study are beneficial and act as a guide for Iraqi manufacturing managers and practitioners to improve their organizational performance
