    Understanding the Kepler Reaction Wheels & Satellite

    Following the loss of two reaction wheels four years into its mission, the Kepler team was faced with reinventing an operational approach to continue to deliver compelling science using an unanticipated suite of actuators. Spacecraft thrusters were not designed for accurate pointing control, yet with only two reaction wheels, only two axes could be actively controlled. With solar pressure as the only disturbing force, and recognizing the innate symmetry of the spacecraft, the K2 mission points the spacecraft in the orbital plane for three months at a time, placing the antennas 90 from the earth. Mapping the solar balance ridge 70 M km from Earth, with limited communications and a reduced staff presented a significant operational challenge

    Part 1 of the paper, ‘Issues in making courseware exploitable’, is about dealing with the legacy of large volumes of incompatible non‐integrated courseware which are currently being generated within initiatives such as the Teaching and Learning Technology Programme (TLTP). We suggest strategies for allowing end‐users to apply courseware management techniques belatedly to current courseware developments, thereby offering ways of making the emerging courseware more exploitable than it otherwise would be. Part 2 of the paper, ‘Issues in making exploitable courseware’, takes a forward‐looking approach which recognizes that future courseware development efforts must pre‐empt these problems of incompatibility and non‐integration. Courseware development must mature to the stage where it makes use of courseware design standards, embraces a host of essential lessons from conventional software development, and recognizes the importance of courseware management issues

    Reinventing the Library at Eastern Washington University: An Intensive Strategic Planning Experience with Faculty

    In the spring of 2006, Eastern Washington University Libraries received an institutional strategic planning grant to hold a two-week strategic planning institute with faculty members representing the six colleges at Eastern Washington University (EWU). The purpose of the institute, titled “Reinventing the Library,” was to articulate a five-year vision for the role of the library within the university. The institute was held at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library on the Cheney campus of EWU from July 24 through August 4, 2007, and was planned and facilitated by Dean of Libraries Patricia Kelley. Thirteen faculty members, including two members of the library faculty, participated. The curriculum for “Reinventing the Library” included presentations by guest speakers on national and institutional trends affecting EWU Libraries, group discussion, and planning activities. In the last days of the institute, participants achieved consensus on the future role of the EWU Libraries and drafted a vision statement. The institute has had a significant impact on library planning and operations

    AI Education: Open-Access Educational Resources on AI

    Open-access AI educational resources are vital to the quality of the AI education we offer. Avoiding the reinvention of wheels is especially important to us because of the special challenges of AI Education. AI could be said to be “the really interesting miscellaneous pile of Computer Science”. While “artificial” is well-understood to encompass engineered artifacts, “intelligence” could be said to encompass any sufficiently difficult problem as would require an intelligent approach and yet does not fall neatly into established Computer Science subdisciplines. Thus AI consists of so many diverse topics that we would be hard-pressed to individually create quality learning experiences for each topic from scratch. In this column, we focus on a few online resources that we would recommend to AI Educators looking to find good starting points for course development. [excerpt

    Reinventing the Wheel

    Reinventing the Wheel selected tires and designed wheels for the 2018 Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Formula SAE combustion vehicle. Available tire options were evaluated for steady-state and transient performance as well as vehicle integration. A single-piece composite wheel with hollow spokes was designed to meet stiffness, strength, and tolerance requirements. A detailed study of wheel loading and geometric structural efficiency was performed. Finite element analysis was used to iterate the geometry and laminate. A two-piece male mold was designed and machined to manufacture the wheel. Removable silicone inserts were used to create the hollow spokes

    A new, more efficient waterwheel design for very-low-head hydropower schemes

    Very-low-head hydropower constitutes a large untapped renewable energy source, estimated at 1 GW in the UK alone. A new type of low-impact waterwheel has been developed and tested at Abertay University in Scotland to improve the economic viability of such schemes. For example, on a 2·5 m high weir in the UK with 5 m3/s mean flow, one waterwheel could produce an annual investment return of 7·5% for over 100 years. This paper describes the evolution of the design and reports on scale-model tests. These show that the new design harnesses significant potential and kinetic energy to generate power and handles over four times as much water per metre width compared to traditional designs

    C6 Wheels

    This document details the C6 Wheels project being undertaken for senior design. The objective is to design and manufacture carbon fiber reinforced polymer wheels for the Cal Poly Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) team. The wheel shells will be used on FSAE’s competition vehicles. FSAE requested the wheels to improve the handling characteristics of their vehicles by reducing the unsprung and rotational mass. They have attempted carbon fiber wheels previously but have not yet run any on their vehicles. FSAE specifically proposed the design of carbon fiber shells with an aluminum center as opposed to full carbon fiber wheels on the recommendation of the 2018 attempt. C6 Wheels is responsible for designing the wheel shells—including interfacing with the aluminum centers, designing and manufacturing the mold tooling, and molding of the carbon fiber wheel shells—including any post machining. The aluminum centers are being designed and manufactured by the FSAE team

    This article illuminates the common concepts and widely-observed practices concerning open source. Positioning 'open-source' as a common practice and a viable methodology for collaborative participatory co-production in today's knowledge society, the article explains how open-source co-production participatory methods, now also seen in mundane cultural, food and beverage production and consumption, evolve from the Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) movement, what motivate people to participate, and how such practices implicate in different sectors in contemporary societies. This article argues that the open-source practices resemble the amateur DIY cultures and can be considered as a lifestyle, elected and subscribed by some. Open source suggests that consumption is no longer simply a passive activity; it could be a personal statement, a liberating, creative and varied experience
