    Register allocation and optimization techniques in compiler construction

    The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the implementation of register allocation and optimization techniques used in the process of compiler construction. The implementation issues were investigated by choosing an architecture and examining various register allocation and optimization techniques. In choosing the techniques to be implemented, only the most promising possibilities were explored for the specific architecture chosen. The goal was to categorize the register allocation and optimization schemes for the architecture

    Simple optimizing JIT compilation of higher-order dynamic programming languages

    ImplĂ©menter efficacement les langages de programmation dynamiques demande beaucoup d’effort de dĂ©veloppement. Les compilateurs ne cessent de devenir de plus en plus complexes. Aujourd’hui, ils incluent souvent une phase d’interprĂ©tation, plusieurs phases de compilation, plusieurs reprĂ©sentations intermĂ©diaires et des analyses de code. Toutes ces techniques permettent d’implĂ©menter efficacement un langage de programmation dynamique, mais leur mise en oeuvre est difficile dans un contexte oĂč les ressources de dĂ©veloppement sont limitĂ©es. Nous proposons une nouvelle approche et de nouvelles techniques dynamiques permettant de dĂ©velopper des compilateurs performants pour les langages dynamiques avec de relativement bonnes performances et un faible effort de dĂ©veloppement. Nous prĂ©sentons une approche simple de compilation Ă  la volĂ©e qui permet d’implĂ©menter un langage en une seule phase de compilation, sans transformation vers des reprĂ©sentations intermĂ©diaires. Nous expliquons comment le versionnement de blocs de base, une technique de compilation existante, peut ĂȘtre Ă©tendue, sans effort de dĂ©veloppement significatif, pour fonctionner interprocĂ©duralement avec les langages de programmation d’ordre supĂ©rieur, permettant d’appliquer des optimisations interprocĂ©durales sur ces langages. Nous expliquons Ă©galement comment le versionnement de blocs de base permet de supprimer certaines opĂ©rations utilisĂ©es pour implĂ©menter les langages dynamiques et qui impactent les performances comme les vĂ©rifications de type. Nous expliquons aussi comment les compilateurs peuvent exploiter les reprĂ©sentations dynamiques des valeurs par Tagging et NaN-boxing pour optimiser le code gĂ©nĂ©rĂ© avec peu d’effort de dĂ©veloppement. Nous prĂ©sentons Ă©galement notre expĂ©rience de dĂ©veloppement d’un compilateur Ă  la volĂ©e pour le langage de programmation Scheme, pour montrer que ces techniques permettent effectivement de construire un compilateur avec un effort moins important que les compilateurs actuels et qu’elles permettent de gĂ©nĂ©rer du code efficace, qui rivalise avec les meilleures implĂ©mentations du langage Scheme.Efficiently implementing dynamic programming languages requires a significant development effort. Over the years, compilers have become more complex. Today, they typically include an interpretation phase, several compilation phases, several intermediate representations and code analyses. These techniques allow efficiently implementing these programming languages but are difficult to implement in contexts in which development resources are limited. We propose a new approach and new techniques to build optimizing just-in-time compilers for dynamic languages with relatively good performance and low development effort. We present a simple just-in-time compilation approach to implement a language with a single compilation phase, without the need to use code transformations to intermediate representations. We explain how basic block versioning, an existing compilation technique, can be extended without significant development effort, to work interprocedurally with higherorder programming languages allowing interprocedural optimizations on these languages. We also explain how basic block versioning allows removing operations used to implement dynamic languages that degrade performance, such as type checks, and how compilers can use Tagging and NaN-boxing to optimize the generated code with low development effort. We present our experience of building a JIT compiler using these techniques for the Scheme programming language to show that they indeed allow building compilers with less development effort than other implementations and that they allow generating efficient code that competes with current mature implementations of the Scheme language

    The Weakest Failure Detector for Solving Wait-Free, Eventually Bounded-Fair Dining Philosophers

    This dissertation explores the necessary and sufficient conditions to solve a variant of the dining philosophers problem. This dining variant is defined by three properties: wait-freedom, eventual weak exclusion, and eventual bounded fairness. Wait-freedom guarantees that every correct hungry process eventually enters its critical section, regardless of process crashes. Eventual weak exclusion guarantees that every execution has an infinite suffix during which no two live neighbors execute overlapping critical sections. Eventual bounded fairness guarantees that there exists a fairness bound k such that every execution has an infinite suffix during which no correct hungry process is overtaken more than k times by any neighbor. This dining variant (WF-EBF dining for short) is important for synchronization tasks where eventual safety (i.e., eventual weak exclusion) is sufficient for correctness (e.g., duty-cycle scheduling, self-stabilizing daemons, and contention managers). Unfortunately, it is known that wait-free dining is unsolvable in asynchronous message-passing systems subject to crash faults. To circumvent this impossibility result, it is necessary to assume the existence of bounds on timing properties, such as relative process speeds and message delivery time. As such, it is of interest to characterize the necessary and sufficient timing assumptions to solve WF-EBF dining. We focus on implicit timing assumptions, which can be encapsulated by failure detectors. Failure detectors can be viewed as distributed oracles that can be queried for potentially unreliable information about crash faults. The weakest detector D for WF-EBF dining means that D is both necessary and sufficient. Necessity means that every failure detector that solves WF-EBF dining is at least as strong as D. Sufficiency means that there exists at least one algorithm that solves WF-EBF dining using D. As such, our research goal is to characterize the weakest failure detector to solve WF-EBF dining. We prove that the eventually perfect failure detector 3P is the weakest failure detector for solving WF-EBF dining. 3P eventually suspects crashed processes permanently, but may make mistakes by wrongfully suspecting correct processes finitely many times during any execution. As such, 3P eventually stops suspecting correct processes

    Sharing GPUs for Real-Time Autonomous-Driving Systems

    Autonomous vehicles at mass-market scales are on the horizon. Cameras are the least expensive among common sensor types and can preserve features such as color and texture that other sensors cannot. Therefore, realizing full autonomy in vehicles at a reasonable cost is expected to entail computer-vision techniques. These computer-vision applications require massive parallelism provided by the underlying shared accelerators, such as graphics processing units, or GPUs, to function “in real time.” However, when computer-vision researchers and GPU vendors refer to “real time,” they usually mean “real fast”; in contrast, certifiable automotive systems must be “real time” in the sense of being predictable. This dissertation addresses the challenging problem of how GPUs can be shared predictably and efficiently for real-time autonomous-driving systems. We tackle this challenge in four steps. First, we investigate NVIDIA GPUs with respect to scheduling, synchronization, and execution. We conduct an extensive set of experiments to infer NVIDIA GPU scheduling rules, which are unfortunately undisclosed by NVIDIA and are beyond access owing to their closed-source software stack. We also expose a list of pitfalls pertaining to CPU-GPU synchronization that can result in unbounded response times of GPU-using applications. Lastly, we examine a fundamental trade-off for designing real-time tasks under different execution options. Overall, our investigation provides an essential understanding of NVIDIA GPUs, allowing us to further model and analyze GPU tasks. Second, we develop a new model and conduct schedulability analysis for GPU tasks. We extend the well-studied sporadic task model with additional parameters that characterize the parallel execution of GPU tasks. We show that NVIDIA scheduling rules are subject to fundamental capacity loss, which implies a necessary total utilization bound. We derive response-time bounds for GPU task systems that satisfy our schedulability conditions. Third, we address an industrial challenge of supplying the throughput performance of computer-vision frameworks to support adequate coverage and redundancy offered by an array of cameras. We re-think the design of convolution neural network (CNN) software to better utilize hardware resources and achieve increased throughput (number of simultaneous camera streams) without any appreciable increase in per-frame latency (camera to CNN output) or reduction of per-stream accuracy. Fourth, we apply our analysis to a finer-grained graph scheduling of a computer-vision standard, OpenVX, which explicitly targets embedded and real-time systems.
