    Referee assignment in the Chilean football league using integer programming and patterns

    This article uses integer linear programming to address the referee assignment problem in the First Division of the Chilean professional football league. The proposed approach considers balance in the number of matches each referee must officiate, the frequency of each referee being assigned to a given team, the distance each referee must travel over the course of a season, and the appropriate pairings of referee experience or skill category with the importance of the matches. Two methodologies are studied, one traditional and the other a pattern-based formulation inspired by the home-away patterns for scheduling season match calendars. Both methodologies are tested in real-world and experimental instances, reporting results that improve significantly on the manual assignments. The pattern-based formulation attains major reductions in execution times, solving real instances to optimality in just a few seconds, while the traditional one takes anywhere from several minutes to more than an hour.Fil: Alarcón, Fernando.     A flexible mathematical model for the planning and designing of a sporting fixture by considering the assignment of referees

    Indexación: Scopus.This paper deals with the problems faced with the designing and planning of a sporting fixture considering correct referee assignments. A non-linear binary program model is proposed to solve the problems, which aims to minimize the sums of the differences that exist between the requirements of each match and the quality of the referee assigned achieving the design of the most adequate referee for each match. The efficiency of the proposed model is proved using some real data obtained from various fixtures for sports such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball. The mathematical model is solved by using CPLEX 12.7.0., which allows the automatic linearization of the problems. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology for tackling problems, as well as its extension to other sporting disciplines, which require a similar type of planning.     Operations research techniques for scheduling chile's second division soccer league

    In this paper, we use operations research (OR) techniques to schedule the Second Division of the Chilean professional soccer league. The solution must satisfy a series of conditions requested by league officials. Because the teams generally travel long distances by bus, geographical restrictions are particularly important. We specify the scheduling problem and solve it using an integer linear programming (ILP) model that defines when and where each match is played, subject to constraints. For the most difficult instances, we formulate a second ILP model that generates home-away patterns and assigns them to the teams; we then run the model, which determines the match schedule. Chilean league officials have successfully used the models to schedule all five Second Division tournaments between 2007 and 2010, replacing the random scheduling methodology that they used previously. Since 2007, the two formulations have been adapted to various formats with which the Second Division has experimented; these include a quadruple round robin and a two-phase tournament with zonal and national phases. The application we present is one of a number of such projects that the authors and their colleagues developed over the past few years, and it represents an expansion of the use of OR techniques for managing tasks in Chilean soccer.Fil: Duran, Guillermo Alfredo.     Fair draws for group rounds in sport tournaments

    We propose two draw systems for the group round of sport tournaments where there are some geographical and/or seeding restrictions. One of the systems, related to the equal-sum partition problem, is "perfect, " since it yields perfectly balanced groups. The other system, which uses the classical scheme of extracting teams from pots, is heuristic and gives results where the groups have very similar scores. We apply our results to Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Soccer World Cups and show that our proposals are much better than the FIFA system and also outperform other recently developed systems

    Sailing League Problems

    We describe a class of combinatorial design problems which typically occur in professional sailing league competitions. We discuss connections to mathematical optimization and give suitable boolean quadratic and integer linear optimization problem formulations, as well as further heuristics and restrictions, that can be used to solve sailing league problems in practice. We apply those techniques to three case studies obtained from real sailing leagues and compare the results with used tournament plans.Comment: 22 pages, improved exposition, added additional reference

    Solving Challenging Real-World Scheduling Problems

    This work contains a series of studies on the optimization of three real-world scheduling problems, school timetabling, sports scheduling and staff scheduling. These challenging problems are solved to customer satisfaction using the proposed PEAST algorithm. The customer satisfaction refers to the fact that implementations of the algorithm are in industry use. The PEAST algorithm is a product of long-term research and development. The first version of it was introduced in 1998. This thesis is a result of a five-year development of the algorithm. One of the most valuable characteristics of the algorithm has proven to be the ability to solve a wide range of scheduling problems. It is likely that it can be tuned to tackle also a range of other combinatorial problems. The algorithm uses features from numerous different metaheuristics which is the main reason for its success.     English Premier League scheduling using simulated annealing

    This is the first known attempt at scheduling the English Premier League (EPL), which is a NP-hard problem, in the literature. In this research an initial schedule is created using a ‘polygon’ construction method, a method which originates in graph theory. Two distinct simulated annealing metaheuristic solving methodologies are then created to improve this initial schedule. One method is based on a temperature schedule, finite epoch length and reheats while the other is based on a gradually reducing temperature schedule and non-finite epoch length. These two methods were evaluated with respect to solution quality (total penalty), reliability (variation of solution quality over numerous trials) and speed. The official schedule used by the EPL organisers was used for comparison. It was found that the first method produced comparable results, while the second produced improved results. The second method was validated over three seasons and consistently performed well. The findings in this research can be used as the maiden real-world framework and benchmark for the unsolved EPL scheduling problem in the sports scheduling literature

    Self-efficacy, mental models and team adaptation: a first approach on football and futsal refereeing

    Objective: Within the football and futsal refereeing context, even though referees work within teams, there is very little research considering the implications of team dynamics. In response, this study starts to address this gap in the literature by investigating the moderating effect of mental models on the relationship between self-efficacy beliefs and perceptions of team adaptation within the exciting context of professional and national football and futsal refereeing. Design: We obtained online questionnaires from 339 active football and futsal referees within the National and Professional league at two distinct points (April and May) within the football season. Results: Self-efficacy beliefs were positively associated with perceptions of team adaptation (only for football referees). Mental models were positively associated with team adaptation. Likewise, the moderation between mental models and self-efficacy beliefs was positively associated with perceptions of team adaptation (only for futsal referees). However, such an effect was only significant at the futsal referees’ level. Conclusion: This study emphasises the importance of mental models for team adaptation and the importance of self-efficacy beliefs in predicting perceptions of team adaptation. We hope that this study represents the first step in a greater appreciation of the salience of team dynamics and their impact on football and futsal referees’ performance and that future research can build upon our work.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
