Optimizing Scrubbing by Netlist Analysis for FPGA Configuration Bit Classification and Floorplanning
Existing scrubbing techniques for SEU mitigation on FPGAs do not guarantee an
error-free operation after SEU recovering if the affected configuration bits do
belong to feedback loops of the implemented circuits. In this paper, we a)
provide a netlist-based circuit analysis technique to distinguish so-called
critical configuration bits from essential bits in order to identify
configuration bits which will need also state-restoring actions after a
recovered SEU and which not. Furthermore, b) an alternative classification
approach using fault injection is developed in order to compare both
classification techniques. Moreover, c) we will propose a floorplanning
approach for reducing the effective number of scrubbed frames and d),
experimental results will give evidence that our optimization methodology not
only allows to detect errors earlier but also to minimize the
Mean-Time-To-Repair (MTTR) of a circuit considerably. In particular, we show
that by using our approach, the MTTR for datapath-intensive circuits can be
reduced by up to 48.5% in comparison to standard approaches
Advanced information processing system: The Army fault tolerant architecture conceptual study. Volume 2: Army fault tolerant architecture design and analysis
Described here is the Army Fault Tolerant Architecture (AFTA) hardware architecture and components and the operating system. The architectural and operational theory of the AFTA Fault Tolerant Data Bus is discussed. The test and maintenance strategy developed for use in fielded AFTA installations is presented. An approach to be used in reducing the probability of AFTA failure due to common mode faults is described. Analytical models for AFTA performance, reliability, availability, life cycle cost, weight, power, and volume are developed. An approach is presented for using VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) to describe and design AFTA's developmental hardware. A plan is described for verifying and validating key AFTA concepts during the Dem/Val phase. Analytical models and partial mission requirements are used to generate AFTA configurations for the TF/TA/NOE and Ground Vehicle missions
A Flip-Flop Matching Engine to Verify Sequential Optimizations
Equivalence checking tools often use a flip-flop matching step to avoid the state space traversal. Due to sequential optimizations performed during synthesis (merge, replication, redundancy removal, ...) and don't care conditions, the matching step can be very complex as well as incomplete. If the matching is incomplete, even the use of a fast and efficient SAT solver during the combinational equivalence-checking step may not prevent the failure of this approach. In this paper, we present a flip-flop matching engine, which is able to verify optimized circuits and handle don't care conditions
Investigations into the feasibility of an on-line test methodology
This thesis aims to understand how information coding and the protocol that it
supports can affect the characteristics of electronic circuits. More specifically, it
investigates an on-line test methodology called IFIS (If it Fails It Stops) and its
impact on the design, implementation and subsequent characteristics of circuits
intended for application specific lC (ASIC) technology.
The first study investigates the influences of information coding and protocol on the
characteristics of IFIS systems. The second study investigates methods of circuit
design applicable to IFIS cells and identifies the· technique possessing the
characteristics most suitable for on-line testing. The third study investigates the
characteristics of a 'real-life' commercial UART re-engineered using the techniques
resulting from the previous two studies. The final study investigates the effects of the
halting properties endowed by the protocol on failure diagnosis within IFIS systems.
The outcome of this work is an identification and characterisation of the factors that
influence behaviour, implementation costs and the ability to test and diagnose IFIS
designs
Advanced CO2 removal process control and monitor instrumentation development
A progam to evaluate, design and demonstrate major advances in control and monitor instrumentation was undertaken. A carbon dioxide removal process, one whose maturity level makes it a prime candidate for early flight demonstration was investigated. The instrumentation design incorporates features which are compatible with anticipated flight requirements. Current electronics technology and projected advances are included. In addition, the program established commonality of components for all advanced life support subsystems. It was concluded from the studies and design activities conducted under this program that the next generation of instrumentation will be greatly smaller than the prior one. Not only physical size but weight, power and heat rejection requirements were reduced in the range of 80 to 85% from the former level of research and development instrumentation. Using a microprocessor based computer, a standard computer bus structure and nonvolatile memory, improved fabrication techniques and aerospace packaging this instrumentation will greatly enhance overall reliability and total system availability
Fault diagnostic instrumentation design for environmental control and life support systems
As a development phase moves toward flight hardware, the system availability becomes an important design aspect which requires high reliability and maintainability. As part of continous development efforts, a program to evaluate, design, and demonstrate advanced instrumentation fault diagnostics was successfully completed. Fault tolerance designs for reliability and other instrumenation capabilities to increase maintainability were evaluated and studied

In earlier days, interfacing peripheral devices to host computer has a big problematic. There existed so many different kinds’ ports like serial port, parallel port, PS/2 etc. And their use restricts many situations, Such as no hot-pluggability and involuntary configuration. There are very less number of methods to connect the peripheral devices to host computer. The main reason that Universal Serial Bus was implemented to provide an additional benefits compared to earlier interfacing ports. USB is designed to allow many peripheral be connecting using single standardize interface. It provides an expandable fast, cost effective, hot-pluggable plug and play serial hardware interface that makes life of computer user easier allowing them to plug different devices to into USB port and have them configured automatically. In this thesis demonstrated the USB v1.1 architecture part in briefly and generated gate level net list form RTL code by applying the different constraints like timing, area and power. By applying the various types design constraints so that the performance was improved by 30%. And then it implemented in physically by using SoC encounter EDI system, estimation of chip size, power analysis and routing the clock signal to all flip-flops presented in the design. To reduce the clock switching power implemented register clustering algorithm (DBSCAN). In this design implementation TSMC 180nm technology library is used
Decomposition of sequential and concurrent models
Le macchine a stati finiti (FSM), sistemi di transizioni (TS) e le reti di Petri (PN) sono importanti modelli formali per la progettazione di sistemi. Un problema fodamentale è la conversione da un modello all'altro. Questa tesi esplora il mondo delle reti di Petri e della decomposizione di sistemi di transizioni. Per quanto riguarda la decomposizione dei sistemi di transizioni, la teoria delle regioni rappresenta la colonna portante dell'intero processo di decomposizione, mirato soprattutto a decomposizioni che utilizzano due sottoclassi delle reti di Petri: macchine a stati e reti di Petri a scelta libera. Nella tesi si dimostra che una proprietà chiamata ``chiusura rispetto all'eccitazione" (excitation-closure) è sufficiente per produrre un insieme di reti di Petri la cui sincronizzazione è bisimile al sistema di transizioni (o rete di Petri di partenza, se la decomposizione parte da una rete di Petri), dimostrando costruttivamente l'esistenza di una bisimulazione. Inoltre, è stato implementato un software che esegue la decomposizione dei sistemi di transizioni, per rafforzare i risultati teorici con dati sperimentali sistematici. Nella seconda parte della dissertazione si analizza un nuovo modello chiamato MSFSM, che rappresenta un insieme di FSM sincronizzate da due primitive specifiche (Wait State - Stato d'Attesa e Transition Barrier - Barriera di Transizione). Tale modello trova un utilizzo significativo nella sintesi di circuiti sincroni a partire da reti di Petri a scelta libera. In particolare vengono identificati degli errori nell'approccio originale, fornendo delle correzioni.Finite State Machines (FSMs), transition systems (TSs) and Petri nets (PNs) are important models of computation ubiquitous in formal methods for modeling systems. Important problems involve the transition from one model to another. This thesis explores Petri nets, transition systems and Finite State Machines decomposition and optimization. The first part addresses decomposition of transition systems and Petri nets, based on the theory of regions, representing them by means of restricted PNs, e.g., State Machines (SMs) and Free-choice Petri nets (FCPNs). We show that the property called ``excitation-closure" is sufficient to produce a set of synchronized Petri nets bisimilar to the original transition system or to the initial Petri net (if the decomposition starts from a PN), proving by construction the existence of a bisimulation. Furthermore, we implemented a software performing the decomposition of transition systems, and reported extensive experiments. The second part of the dissertation discusses Multiple Synchronized Finite State Machines (MSFSMs) specifying a set of FSMs synchronized by specific primitives: Wait State and Transition Barrier. It introduces a method for converting Petri nets into synchronous circuits using MSFSM, identifies errors in the initial approach, and provides corrections
Airborne Advanced Reconfigurable Computer System (ARCS)
A digital computer subsystem fault-tolerant concept was defined, and the potential benefits and costs of such a subsystem were assessed when used as the central element of a new transport's flight control system. The derived advanced reconfigurable computer system (ARCS) is a triple-redundant computer subsystem that automatically reconfigures, under multiple fault conditions, from triplex to duplex to simplex operation, with redundancy recovery if the fault condition is transient. The study included criteria development covering factors at the aircraft's operation level that would influence the design of a fault-tolerant system for commercial airline use. A new reliability analysis tool was developed for evaluating redundant, fault-tolerant system availability and survivability; and a stringent digital system software design methodology was used to achieve design/implementation visibility
N-variant Hardware Design
The emergence of lightweight embedded devices imposes stringent constraints on
the area and power of the circuits used to construct them. Meanwhile, many of
these embedded devices are used in applications that require diversity and flexibility
to make them secure and adaptable to the fluctuating workload or variable fabric.
While field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) provide high flexibility, the use of
application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to implement such devices is more
appealing because ASICs can currently provide an order of magnitude less area and
better performance in terms of power and speed. My proposed research introduces the
N-variant hardware design methodology that adds the sufficient flexibility needed by
such devices while preserving the performance and area advantages of using ASICs.
The N-variant hardware design embeds different variants of the design control
part on the same IC to provide diversity and flexibility. Because the control circuitry
usually represents a small fraction of the whole circuit, using multiple versions of the
control circuitry is expected to have a low overhead. The objective of my thesis is to
formulate a method that provides the following advantages: (i) ease of integration in
the current ASIC design flow, (ii) minimal impact on the performance and area of the
ASIC design, and (iii) providing a wide range of applications for hardware security
and tuning the performance of chips either statically (e.g., post-silicon optimization)
or dynamically (at runtime). This is achieved by adding diversity at two orthogonal
levels: (i) state space diversity, and (ii) scheduling diversity. State space diversity
expands the state space of the controller. Using state space diversity, we introduce
an authentication mechanism and the first active hardware metering schemes. On the
other hand, scheduling diversity is achieved by embedding different control schedules
in the same design. The scheduling diversity can be spatial, temporal, or a hybrid
of both methods. Spatial diversity is achieved by implementing multiple control
schedules that use various parts of the chip at different rates. Temporal diversity
provides variants of the controller that can operate at unequal speeds. A hybrid of
both spatial and temporal diversities can also be implemented. Scheduling diversity
is used to add the flexibility to tune the performance of the chip. An application
of the thermal management of the chip is demonstrated using scheduling diversity.
Experimental results show that the proposed method is easy to integrate in the current
ASIC flow, has a wide range of applications, and incurs low overhead
