    On-chip adaptive power management for WPT-Enabled IoT

    Internet of Things (IoT), as broadband network connecting every physical objects, is becoming more widely available in various industrial, medical, home and automotive applications. In such network, the physical devices, vehicles, medical assistance, and home appliances among others are supposed to be embedded by sensors, actuators, radio frequency (RF) antennas, memory, and microprocessors, such that these devices are able to exchange data and connect with other devices in the network. Among other IoT’s pillars, wireless sensor network (WSN) is one of the main parts comprising massive clusters of spatially distributed sensor nodes dedicated for sensing and monitoring environmental conditions. The lifetime of a WSN is greatly dependent on the lifetime of the small sensor nodes, which, in turn, is primarily dependent on energy availability within every sensor node. Predominantly, the main energy source for a sensor node is supplied by a small battery attached to it. In a large WSN with massive number of deployed sensor nodes, it becomes a challenge to replace the batteries of every single sensor node especially for sensor nodes deployed in harsh environments. Consequently, powering the sensor nodes becomes a key limiting issue, which poses important challenges for their practicality and cost. Therefore, in this thesis we propose enabling WSN, as the main pillar of IoT, by means of resonant inductive coupling (RIC) wireless power transfer (WPT). In order to enable efficient energy delivery at higher range, high quality factor RIC-WPT system is required in order to boost the magnetic flux generated at the transmitting coil. However, an adaptive front-end is essential for self-tuning the resonant tank against any mismatch in the components values, distance variation, and interference from close metallic objects. Consequently, the purpose of the thesis is to develop and design an adaptive efficient switch-mode front-end for self-tuning in WPT receivers in multiple receiver system. The thesis start by giving background about the IoT system and the technical bottleneck followed by the problem statement and thesis scope. Then, Chapter 2 provides detailed backgrounds about the RIC-WPT system. Specifically, Chapter 2 analyzes the characteristics of different compensation topologies in RIC-WPT followed by the implications of mistuning on efficiency and power transfer capability. Chapter 3 discusses the concept of switch-mode gyrators as a potential candidate for generic variable reactive element synthesis while different potential applications and design cases are provided. Chapter 4 proposes two different self-tuning control for WPT receivers that utilize switch-mode gyrators as variable reactive element synthesis. The performance aspects of control approaches are discussed and evaluated as well in Chapter 4. The development and exploration of more compact front-end for self-tuned WPT receiver is investigated in Chapter 5 by proposing a phase-controlled switched inductor converter. The operation and design details of different switch-mode phase-controlled topologies are given and evaluated in the same chapter. Finally, Chapter 6 provides the conclusions and highlight the contribution of the thesis, in addition to suggesting the related future research topics.Internet de las cosas (IoT), como red de banda ancha que interconecta cualquier cosa, se está estableciendo como una tecnología valiosa en varias aplicaciones industriales, médicas, domóticas y en el sector del automóvil. En dicha red, los dispositivos físicos, los vehículos, los sistemas de asistencia médica y los electrodomésticos, entre otros, incluyen sensores, actuadores, subsistemas de comunicación, memoria y microprocesadores, de modo que son capaces de intercambiar datos e interconectarse con otros elementos de la red. Entre otros pilares que posibilitan IoT, la red de sensores inalámbricos (WSN), que es una de las partes cruciales del sistema, está formada por un conjunto masivo de nodos de sensado distribuidos espacialmente, y dedicados a sensar y monitorizar las condiciones del contexto de las cosas interconectadas. El tiempo de vida útil de una red WSN depende estrechamente del tiempo de vida de los pequeños nodos sensores, los cuales, a su vez, dependen primordialmente de la disponibilidad de energía en cada nodo sensor. La fuente principal de energía para un nodo sensor suele ser una pequeña batería integrada en él. En una red WSN con muchos nodos y con una alta densidad, es un desafío el reemplazar las baterías de cada nodo sensor, especialmente en entornos hostiles, como puedan ser en escenarios de Industria 4.0. En consecuencia, la alimentación de los nodos sensores constituye uno de los cuellos de botella que limitan un despliegue masivo práctico y de bajo coste. A tenor de estas circunstancias, en esta tesis doctoral se propone habilitar las redes WSN, como pilar principal de sistemas IoT, mediante sistemas de transferencia inalámbrica de energía (WPT) basados en acoplamiento inductivo resonante (RIC). Con objeto de posibilitar el suministro eficiente de energía a mayores distancias, deben aumentarse los factores de calidad de los elementos inductivos resonantes del sistema RIC-WPT, especialmente con el propósito de aumentar el flujo magnético generado por el inductor transmisor de energía y su acoplamiento resonante en recepción. Sin embargo, dotar al cabezal electrónico que gestiona y condicionada el flujo de energía de capacidad adaptativa es esencial para conseguir la autosintonía automática del sistema acoplado y resonante RIC-WPT, que es muy propenso a la desintonía ante desajustes en los parámetros nominales de los componentes, variaciones de distancia entre transmisor y receptores, así como debido a la interferencia de objetos metálicos. Es por tanto el objetivo central de esta tesis doctoral el concebir, proponer, diseñar y validar un sistema de WPT para múltiples receptores que incluya funciones adaptativas de autosintonía mediante circuitos conmutados de alto rendimiento energético, y susceptible de ser integrado en un chip para el condicionamiento de energía en cada receptor de forma miniaturizada y desplegable de forma masiva. La tesis empieza proporcionando una revisión del estado del arte en sistemas de IoT destacando el reto tecnológico de la alimentación energética de los nodos sensores distribuidos y planteando así el foco de la tesis doctoral. El capítulo 2 sigue con una revisión crítica del statu quo de los sistemas de transferencia inalámbrica de energía RIC-WPT. Específicamente, el capítulo 2 analiza las características de diferentes estructuras circuitales de compensación en RIC-WPT seguido de una descripción crítica de las implicaciones de la desintonía en la eficiencia y la capacidad de transferencia energética del sistema. El capítulo 3 propone y explora el concepto de utilizar circuitos conmutados con función de girador como potenciales candidatos para la síntesis de propósito general de elementos reactivos variables sintonizables electrónicamente, incluyendo varias aplicaciones y casos de uso.     Harmonic Suppression of Shunt Hybrid Filter Using LQR-PSO based

    In linear quadratic regulator (LQR), two different weighting matrices play an important role in presenting the performance of this controller. Instead of using classic common approach, which is trial and error method, this study proposes a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to track the best solution of the weighting matrices. The proposed algorithm is tested on shunt hybrid active power filter (APF) to mitigate the harmonic contents in voltage and current signals in a nonlinear load system. The modeling work of this proposed system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. From the simulation, the obtained results proved that using PSO in tuning the LQR controller produce smoother nonlinear voltage and current signals. In fact, the amount of current to be injected into network can be reduced up to 95%. Besides, less time is consumed during searching the optimum weighting matrices using the proposed approach

    Wireless power transfer techniques have been gaining researchers' and industry attention due to the increasing number of battery-powered devices, such as mobile computers, mobile phones, smart devices, intelligent sensors, mainly as a way to replace the standard cable charging, but also for powering battery-less equipment. The storage capacity of batteries is an extremely important element of how a device can be used. If we talk about battery-powered electronic equipment, the autonomy is one factor that may be essential in choosing a device or another, making the solution of remote powering very attractive. A distinction has to be made between the two forms of wireless power transmission, as seen in terms of how the transmitted energy is used at the receiving point: - Transmission of information or data, when it is essential for an amount of energy to reach the receiver to restore the transmitted information; - Transmission of electric energy in the form of electromagnetic field, when the energy transfer efficiency is essential, the power being used to energize the receiving equipment.     Single-Chip Isolated DC-DC Converter with Self-Tuned Maximum Power Transfer Frequency

    abstract: There is an increasing demand for fully integrated point-of-load (POL) isolated DC-DC converters that can provide an isolation barrier between the primary and the secondary side, while delivering a low ripple, low noise regulated voltage at their isolated sides to a high dynamic range, sensitive mixed signal devices, such as sensors, current-shunt-monitors and ADCs. For these applications, smaller system size and integration level is important because the whole system may need to fit to limited space. Traditional methods for providing isolated power are discrete solutions using bulky transformers. Miniaturization of isolated POL regulators is becoming highly desirable for low power applications. A fully integrated, low noise isolated point-of-load DC-DC converter for supply regulation of high dynamic range analog and mixed signal sensor signal-chains is presented. The isolated DC-DC converter utilizes an integrated planar air-core micro-transformer as a coupled resonator and isolation barrier and enables direct connection of low-voltage mixed signal circuits to higher supply rails. The air core transformer is driven at its primary resonant frequency of 100 MHz to achieve maximum power transfer. A mixed-signal perturb-and-observe based frequency search algorithm is developed to improve maximum power transfer efficiency by 60% across the isolation barrier compared to fixed driving frequency method. The isolated converter’s output ripple is reduced by utilizing spread spectrum clocking in the driver. An isolated PMOS LDO in the secondary side is used to suppress switching noise and ripple by 21dB. Conducted and radiated EMI distribution on the IC is measured by a set of integrated ring oscillator based noise sensors with -68dBm noise sensitivity. The proposed isolated converter achieves highest level of integration with respect to earlier reported integrated isolated converters, while providing 50V on-chip junction isolation without the need for extra silicon post-processing steps.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    Evolutionary learning and global search for multi-optimal PID tuning rules

    With the advances in microprocessor technology, control systems are widely seen not only in industry but now also in household appliances and consumer electronics. Among all control schemes developed so far, Proportional plus Integral plus Derivative (PID) control is the most widely adopted in practice. Today, more than 90% of industrial controllers have a built-in PID function. Their wide applications have stimulated and sustained the research and development of PID tuning techniques, patents, software packages and hardware modules. Due to parameter interaction and format variation, tuning a PID controller is not as straightforward as one would have anticipated. Therefore, designing speedy tuning rules should greatly reduce the burden on new installation and ‘time-to-market’ and should also enhance the competitive advantages of the PID system under offer. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) would be an ideal candidate to conduct the learning and search for multi-objective PID tuning rules. A simple to implement MOEA, termed s-MOEA, is devised and compared with MOEAs developed elsewhere. Extensive study and analysis are performed on metrics for evaluating MOEA performance, so as to help with this comparison and development. As a result, a novel visualisation technique, termed “Distance and Distribution” (DD)” chart, is developed to overcome some of the limitations of existing metrics and visualisation techniques. The DD chart allows a user to view the comparison of multiple sets of high order non-dominated solutions in a two-dimensional space. The capability of DD chart is shown in the comparison process and it is shown to be a useful tool for gathering more in-depth information of an MOEA which is not possible in existing empirical studies. Truly multi-objective global PID tuning rules are then evolved as a result of interfacing the s-MOEA with closed-loop simulations under practical constraints. It takes into account multiple, and often conflicting, objectives such as steady-state accuracy and transient responsiveness against stability and overshoots, as well as tracking performance against load disturbance rejection. These evolved rules are compared against other tuning rules both offline on a set of well-recognised PID benchmark test systems and online on three laboratory systems of different dynamics and transport delays. The results show that the rules significantly outperform all existing tuning rules, with multi-criterion optimality. This is made possible as the evolved rules can cover a delay to time constant ratio from zero to infinity based on first-order plus delay plant models. For second-order plus delay plant models, they can also cover all possible dynamics found in practice

    Neural Network-based Model Predictive Control with CPSOGSA for SMBR Filtration

    This paper presents the development of neural network based model predictive control (NNMPC) for controlling submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) filtration process.The main contribution of this paper is the integration of newly developed soft computing optimization technique name as cooperative hybrid particle swarm optimization and gravitational search algorithm (CPSOGSA) with the model predictive control. The CPSOGSA algorithm is used as a real time optimization (RTO) in updating the NNMPC cost function. The developed controller is utilized to control SMBR filtrations permeate flux in preventing flux decline from membrane fouling. The proposed NNMPC is comparedwith proportional integral derivative (PID) controller in term of the percentage overshoot, settling time and integral absolute error (IAE) criteria. The simulation result shows NNMPC perform better control compared with PID controller in term measured control performance of permeate flux

    A Class-E Inductive Powering Link with Backward Data Communications for Implantable Sensor Systems

    The design and implementation of a wireless power and data transfer system based on inductive coupling, having the potential to be used in numerous implantable bio-medical sensors and systems, is presented. The system consists of an external (primary) unit and an internal (secondary) unit. The external unit incorporates a high-efficiency switch-mode Class-E amplifier operating at ~200 kHz for driving the primary coil. The secondary unit consists of a parallel resonant coil followed by the power recovery circuitry. Means for backward data communication from the internal to the external unit over the same pair of coils has been realized using a simple FSK-based modulation scheme incorporated into the internal unit. FSK demodulation and associated filtering are integrated with the base inductive powering system. Prototype system test results indicate the inductive link efficiency can exceed 80% under optimum operating conditions with the overall power transfer efficiency of approximately 30%. The communication system is capable of transmitting up to 10kbps of data with the FSK carrier frequency (i.e., middle-frequency) being only 120kHz. The complete system functions reliably over an inter-coil distances exceeding 2.5cm with a 5V dc supply

    Double Resonant High-Frequency Converters for Wireless Power Transfer

    This thesis describes novel techniques and developments in the design and implementation of a low power radio frequency (40kHz to 1MHz) wireless power transfer (WPT) system, with an application in the wireless charging of autonomous drones without physical connection to its on-board Battery Management System (BMS). The WPT system is developed around a matrix converter exploiting the benefits such as a small footprint (DC-link free), high efficiency and high power density. The overall WPT system topology discussed in this thesis is based on the current state-of-the-art found in literature, but enhancements are made through novel methods to further improve the converter’s stability, reduce control complexity and improve the wireless power efficiency. In this work, each part of the system is analysed and novel techniques are proposed to achieve improvements. The WPT system design methodology presented in this thesis commences with the use of a conventional full-bridge converter. For cost-efficiency and to improve the converters stability, a novel gate drive circuit is presented which provides self-generated negative bias such that a bipolar MOSFET drive can be driven without an additional voltage source or magnetic component. The switching control sequences for both a full-bridge and single phase to single phase matrix converter are analysed which show that the switching of a matrix converter can be considered to be the same as a full-bridge converter under certain conditions. A middleware is then presented that reduces the complexity of the control required for a matrix converter and enables control by a conventional full-bridge controller (i.e. linear controller or microcontroller). A novel technique that can maximise and maintain in real-time the WPT efficiency is presented using a maximum efficiency point tracking approach. A detailed study of potential issues that may affect the implementation of this novel approach are presented and new solutions are proposed. A novel wireless pseudo-synchronous sampling method is presented and implemented on a prototype system to realise the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. Finally, a new hybrid wireless phase-locked loop is presented and implemented to minimise the bandwidth requirements of the maximum efficiency point tracking approach. The performance and methods for implementation of the novel concepts introduced in this thesis are demonstrated through a number of prototypes that were built. These include a matrix converter and two full WPT systems with operating frequencies ranging from sub-megahertz to megahertz level. Moreover, the final prototype is applied to the charging of a quadcopter battery pack to successfully charge the pack wirelessly whilst actively balancing the cells. Hence, fast battery charging and cell balancing, which conventionally requires battery removal, can be achieved without re-balance the weight of the UAV

    Design and development of novel radio frequency identification (RFID) tag structures

    The objective of the proposed research is to design and develop a series of radio frequency identification (RFID) tag structures that exhibit good performance characteristics with cost optimization and can be realized on flexible substrates such as liquid crystal polymer (LCP), paper-based substrate and magnetic composite material for conformal applications. The demand for flexible RFID tags has recently increased tremendously due to the requirements of automatic identification in various areas. Several major challenges existing in today's RFID technologies need to be addressed before RFID can eventually march into everyone's daily life, such as how to design high performance tag antennas with effective impedance matching for passive RFID IC chips to optimize the power performance, how to fabricate ultra-low-cost RFID tags in order to facilitate mass production, how to integrate sensors with passive RFID tags for pervasive sensing applications, and how to realize battery-free active RFID tags in which changing battery is not longer needed. In this research, different RFID tag designs are realized on flexible substrates.
