Real-time HSPA emulator for end-to-edge QoS evaluation in all-IP beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless networks
This paper is aimed at presenting the real-time High Speed
Packet Access (HSPA) emulator that has been developed in
the framework of the AROMA project. Real-time emula-
tors allow reproducing realistic scenarios to test algorithms,
strategies, protocols and applications under realistic condi-
tions. Therefore, real-time emulators constitute a powerful
tool to evaluate the end-user's Quality of Experience (QoE),
which could not be achieved by means of o -line simulations.
The presented emulator is integrated in the AROMA real-
time testbed, which has been developed to provide a frame-
work for demonstrating the bene ts of the common radio re-
source management algorithms as well as the proposed end-
to-edge Quality of Service (QoS) management techniques
developed for all-IP beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless net-
works in the context of the AROMA project. This paper
presents a qualitative description of the developed tool, em-
phasizing some interesting implementation details that may
result helpful in the development of similar emulation plat-
forms. Some illustrative results, showing the capabilities of
the developed tool, are also presented and analyzed.Postprint (published version
Mobility: a double-edged sword for HSPA networks
This paper presents an empirical study on the performance of mobile High Speed Packet Access (HSPA, a 3.5G cellular standard) networks in Hong Kong via extensive field tests. Our study, from the viewpoint of end users, covers virtually all possible mobile scenarios in urban areas, including subways, trains, off-shore ferries and city buses. We have confirmed that mobility has largely negative impacts on the performance of HSPA networks, as fast-changing wireless environment causes serious service deterioration or even interruption. Meanwhile our field experiment results have shown unexpected new findings and thereby exposed new features of the mobile HSPA networks, which contradict commonly held views. We surprisingly find out that mobility can improve fairness of bandwidth sharing among users and traffic flows. Also the triggering and final results of handoffs in mobile HSPA networks are unpredictable and often inappropriate, thus calling for fast reacting fallover mechanisms. We have conducted in-depth research to furnish detailed analysis and explanations to what we have observed. We conclude that mobility is a double-edged sword for HSPA networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first public report on a large scale empirical study on the performance of commercial mobile HSPA networks
A methodology for obtaining More Realistic Cross-Layer QoS Measurements in mobile networks: A VoIP over LTE Use Case
Next generation mobile wireless hybrid network interworking architecture
It is a universally stated design requirement that next generation mobile systems will be compatible and interoperable with IPv6 and with various access technologies such as IEEE 802.11x. Discussion in the literature is currently as to whether the recently developed High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) or the developing Long Term Evaluation (LTE) technology is appropriate for the next generation mobile wireless system. However, the HSPA and the LTE technologies are not sufficient in their current form to provide ubiquitous data services. The third–generation mobile wireless network (3G) provides a highly developed global service to customers through either circuit switched or packet switched networks; new mobile multimedia services (e.g. streaming/mobile TV, location base services, downloads, multiuser games and other applications) that provide greater flexibility for the operator to introduce new services to its portfolio and from the user point of view, more services to select and a variety of higher, on-demand data rates compared with 2.5-2.75G mobile wireless system. However cellular networks suffer from a limited data rate and expensive deployment. In contrast, wireless local area networks (WLAN) are deployed widely in small areas or hotspots, because of their cost-effectiveness, ease of deployment and high data rates in an unlicensed frequency band. On the other hand, WLAN (IEEE 802.11x) cannot provide wide coverage cost-efficiently and is therefore at a disadvantage to 3G in the provision of wide coverage. In order to provide more services at high data rates in the hotspots and campus-wide areas, 3G service providers regard WLAN as a technology that compliments the 3G mobile wireless system. The recent evolution and successful deployment of WLANs worldwide has yielded demand to integrate WLANs with 3G mobile wireless technologies seamlessly. The key goal of this integration is to develop heterogeneous mobile data networks, capable of supporting ubiquitous data services with high data rates in hotspots. The effort to develop heterogeneous networks – also referred to fourth-generation (4G) mobile wireless data networks – is linked with many technical challenges including seamless vertical handovers across WLAN and 3G radio technologies, security, common authentication, unified accounting & billing, WLAN sharing (by several mobile wireless networks – different operators), consistent QoS and service provisioning, etc. This research included modelling a hybrid UMTS/WLAN network with two competent couplings: Tight Coupling and Loose Coupling. The coupling techniques were used in conjunction with EAP-AKA for authentication and Mobile IP for mobility management. The research provides an analysis of the coupling techniques and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the coupling techniques. A large matrix of performance figures were generated for each of the coupling techniques using Opnet Modeller, a network simulation tool
LTE Optimization and Resource Management in Wireless Heterogeneous Networks
Mobile communication technology is evolving with a great pace. The development of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile system by 3GPP is one of the milestones in this direction. This work highlights a few areas in the LTE radio access network where the proposed innovative mechanisms can substantially improve overall LTE system performance. In order to further extend the capacity of LTE networks, an integration with the non-3GPP networks (e.g., WLAN, WiMAX etc.) is also proposed in this work. Moreover, it is discussed how bandwidth resources should be managed in such heterogeneous networks. The work has purposed a comprehensive system architecture as an overlay of the 3GPP defined SAE architecture, effective resource management mechanisms as well as a Linear Programming based analytical solution for the optimal network resource allocation problem. In addition, alternative computationally efficient heuristic based algorithms have also been designed to achieve near-optimal performance
Multimedia session continuity in the IP multimedia subsystem : investigation and testbed implementation
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 91-94).The advent of Internet Protocol (IP) based rich multimedia services and applications has seen rapid growth and adoption in recent years, with an equally increasing user base. Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Television (IPTV) are key examples of services that are blurring the lines between traditional stove-pipe approach network infrastructures. In these, each service required a different network technology to be provisioned, and could only be accessed through a specific end user equipment (UE) technology. The move towards an all-IP core network infrastructure and the proliferation of multi-capability multi-interface user devices has spurred a convergence trend characterized by access to services and applications through any network, any device and anywhere
A novel non-intrusive objective method to predict voice quality of service in LTE networks.
This research aimed to introduce a novel approach for non-intrusive objective
measurement of voice Quality of Service (QoS) in LTE networks. While achieving this aim, the thesis established a thorough knowledge of how voice traffic is
handled in LTE networks, the LTE network architecture and its similarities and
differences to its predecessors and traditional ground IP networks and most
importantly those QoS affecting parameters which are exclusive to LTE environments. Mean Opinion Score (MOS) is the scoring system used to measure
the QoS of voice traffic which can be measured subjectively (as originally intended). Subjective QoS measurement methods are costly and time-consuming,
therefore, objective methods such as Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality
(PESQ) were developed to address these limitations. These objective methods
have a high correlation with subjective MOS scores. However, they either require individual calculation of many network parameters or have an intrusive
nature that requires access to both the reference signal and the degraded signal
for comparison by software. Therefore, the current objective methods are not
suitable for application in real-time measurement and prediction scenarios.
A major contribution of the research was identifying LTE-specific QoS affecting parameters. There is no previous work that combines these parameters to
assess their impacts on QoS.
The experiment was configured in a hardware in the loop environment. This
configuration could serve as a platform for future research which requires simulation of voice traffic in LTE environments.
The key contribution of this research is a novel non-intrusive objective method
for QoS measurement and prediction using neural networks. A comparative
analysis is presented that examines the performance of four neural network
algorithms for non-intrusive measurement and prediction of voice quality over
LTE networks. In conclusion, the Bayesian Regularization algorithm with 4 neurons in the hidden layer and sigmoid symmetric transfer function was identified as the best solution with a Mean Square Error (MSE) rate of 0.001 and
regression value of 0.998 measured for the testing data set
Study, Measurements and Characterisation of a 5G system using a Mobile Network Operator Testbed
The goals for 5G are aggressive. It promises to deliver enhanced end-user experience
by offering new applications and services through gigabit speeds, and significantly
improved performance and reliability. The enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) 5G use
case, for instance, targets peak data rates as high as 20 Gbps in the downlink (DL) and
10 Gbps in the uplink (UL).
While there are different ways to improve data rates, spectrum is at the core of enabling
higher mobile broadband data rates. 5G New Radio (NR) specifies new frequency
bands below 6 GHz and also extends into mmWave frequencies where more
contiguous bandwidth is available for sending lots of data. However, at mmWave
frequencies, signals are more susceptible to impairments. Hence, extra consideration is
needed to determine test approaches that provide the precision required to accurately
evaluate 5G components and devices.
Therefore, the aim of the thesis is to provide a deep dive into 5G technology, explore its
testing and validation, and thereafter present the OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications
Organisation) 5G testbed, including measurement results obtained and its characterisation based on key performance indicators (KPIs)
Quality-Oriented Mobility Management for Multimedia Content Delivery to Mobile Users
The heterogeneous wireless networking environment determined by the latest developments in wireless access technologies promises a high level of communication resources for mobile
computational devices. Although the communication resources provided, especially referring to bandwidth, enable multimedia streaming to mobile users, maintaining a high user perceived quality is still a challenging task. The main factors which affect quality in multimedia streaming over wireless networks are mainly the error-prone nature of the wireless channels and the user mobility. These factors determine a high level of dynamics of wireless communication resources, namely variations in throughput and packet loss as well as network availability and delays in delivering the data packets. Under these conditions maintaining a high level of quality, as perceived by the user, requires a quality oriented mobility management scheme. Consequently we propose the Smooth Adaptive Soft-Handover Algorithm, a novel quality oriented handover management scheme which unlike other similar solutions, smoothly transfer the data traffic from one network to another using multiple simultaneous connections. To estimate the capacity of each connection the novel Quality of Multimedia Streaming (QMS) metric is proposed. The QMS metric aims at offering maximum flexibility and efficiency allowing the applications to fine tune the behavior of the handover algorithm. The current simulation-based performance evaluation clearly shows the better
performance of the proposed Smooth Adaptive Soft-Handover Algorithm as compared with other handover solutions. The evaluation was performed in various scenarios including
multiple mobile hosts performing handover simultaneously, wireless networks with variable overlapping areas, and various network congestion levels
