    Improving cybercrime reporting in Scotland : a systematic literature review

    Background: The UK system for reporting economic cybercrime is called Action Fraud (AF). AF has been found to prioritise high value and low volume crimes. Therefore, people who have been scammed out of less than £100 000 are less likely to have their crime investigated via AF. Consequently, Scotland severed its ties with AF and proceeded to develop its own systems for reporting low value and high-volume crimes. Another problem with AF was that its reports were inaccurate and incomplete. Interestingly, since the 1930s the compilation and investigation of crime reports has always suffered from inaccuracies and discrepancies. This pattern has not been reversed by rapid technological development. Instead, the trend is preserved, not just in the UK, but across the globe. Aim: An exploration of how to improve cybercrime reporting in Scotland was implemented via a systematic literature review the results of which will inform upcoming fieldwork. Due to the lack of data on Scotland, frequent extrapolations were conducted from both the UK and the West. The research questions were: 1. What is known about cybercrime in the UK to date? 2. What is known about cybercrime victims in the UK to date? 3. What is known about cybercrime reporting to date? Method and Analysis: The answers were retrieved by combining Boolean variables with keywords into Scopus, Web of Science and ProQuest. This resulted in the inclusion of 100 peer-reviewed articles (after the exclusion of unsuitable ones). The articles were analysed using Inductive thematic analysis (ITA). The underlying principle of ITA is based on data immersion to identify the themes within. This analysis revealed a common trend, a novel taxonomy, and an original conclusion. Results: The common trend is that of responsibilisation, which is the shifting of responsibility for policing cybercrime from the government onto the citizens and private sector. For example, the government educating citizens about the risks of cybercrime and disengaging with them thereafter is a case of responsibilisation. This is because the government sees it as the victims’ responsibility to follow its advice. One problem of responsibilisation in cybercrime is that if one person is attacked, then many computers can become infected through their error. Therefore, the government should step-up to the task of protecting its citizens. The novel taxonomy is for classifying cybercrime reporting systems according to three pillars, which I referred to as Human-To-Human (H2H), Human-To-Machine (H2M) and Machine-To-Machine (M2M). The advantage of this classification is parsimony, the disadvantage is reductionism. The risk of reductionism applies specifically to crimes that sit in between pillars. Conclusion: To improve cybercrime reporting in Scotland, the process needs to be treated also as a social one rather than a purely mathematical one. This can be achieved by engaging with psychological principles of how emotionally charged social interactions are encoded into memory. Understanding memory will help the police record cybercrime reports in an effective way. This research will impact society because it serves as a foundation for fieldwork with victims of cybercrime and the police tasked with those investigations. The results of the upcoming fieldwork will serve to inform national guidance on how to improve the reporting of cybercrime, which will reduce it and give victims living in Scotland a sense of closure

    The interdisciplinary conceptual design of buildings

    The Interdisciplinary Conceptual Design of Buildings Design activity during the conceptual phase of building projects is dynamic, vibrant and as a result, chaotic in appearance. This problem is compounded by the fact that iterative, or cyclic, design progression is often criticised, with the concept of 'going round in circles' being one that is discouraged. However, designbis a learning activity and, owing to the complexity of contemporary building projects,it is often only by moving ahead to improve knowledge, before taking a step back to re-address a problem with improved understanding, that the design process can progress. Today's design professionals are being urged to undertake early design activity in a more programmable, and thus manageable fashion. As such, it is becoming increasingly apparent that designers have little, if any, shared understanding of what conceptual design actually involves, let alone a deeper knowledge of the structure of iterative progression. This can, and is, causing problems for the industry, as the lack of both common understanding and synchronisation in interdisciplinary thinking is resulting in design team fragmentation and adversarial relationships. By modelling design activity it is possible to simplify, and thus ease understanding of, its complexities. The development and trialling of a generic framework of design phases and activities has allowed a simple graphical means of recording and displaying patterns of design progression to be devised. The models produced have been used to study and analyse the patterns of iterative working, the output of which has enabled a clarification of conceptual design practice to be achieved. A web-based design system has been developed from the paper-based framework. This accords well with the richly iterative and often non-linear process which design typically follows and is intended to encourage creativity without imposing a rigid procedure. The tool offers alternative routes through conceptual design, and contains 'Team Thinking Tools' to help designers widen the solution space, set priorities and evaluate options. In addition, it promotes effective teamwork practices to help teams deal with social interactions. Also, at the user's option, the system can be used to capture, store and retrieve decisions made, and the reasoning behind them. This is of key importance in improving the performance of the industry as a whole, for it is only by understanding how the final product is influenced by early design activity, that the design process can be adapted to take account of these issues on future projects

    A Smart Products Lifecycle Management (sPLM) Framework - Modeling for Conceptualization, Interoperability, and Modularity

    Autonomy and intelligence have been built into many of today’s mechatronic products, taking advantage of low-cost sensors and advanced data analytics technologies. Design of product intelligence (enabled by analytics capabilities) is no longer a trivial or additional option for the product development. The objective of this research is aimed at addressing the challenges raised by the new data-driven design paradigm for smart products development, in which the product itself and the smartness require to be carefully co-constructed. A smart product can be seen as specific compositions and configurations of its physical components to form the body, its analytics models to implement the intelligence, evolving along its lifecycle stages. Based on this view, the contribution of this research is to expand the “Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)” concept traditionally for physical products to data-based products. As a result, a Smart Products Lifecycle Management (sPLM) framework is conceptualized based on a high-dimensional Smart Product Hypercube (sPH) representation and decomposition. First, the sPLM addresses the interoperability issues by developing a Smart Component data model to uniformly represent and compose physical component models created by engineers and analytics models created by data scientists. Second, the sPLM implements an NPD3 process model that incorporates formal data analytics process into the new product development (NPD) process model, in order to support the transdisciplinary information flows and team interactions between engineers and data scientists. Third, the sPLM addresses the issues related to product definition, modular design, product configuration, and lifecycle management of analytics models, by adapting the theoretical frameworks and methods for traditional product design and development. An sPLM proof-of-concept platform had been implemented for validation of the concepts and methodologies developed throughout the research work. The sPLM platform provides a shared data repository to manage the product-, process-, and configuration-related knowledge for smart products development. It also provides a collaborative environment to facilitate transdisciplinary collaboration between product engineers and data scientists

    Architecture de sécurité de bout en bout et mécanismes d'autoprotection pour les environnements Cloud

    Since several years the virtualization of infrastructures became one of the major research challenges, consuming less energy while delivering new services. However, many attacks hinder the global adoption of Cloud computing. Self-protection has recently raised growing interest as possible element of answer to the cloud computing infrastructure protection challenge. Yet, previous solutions fall at the last hurdle as they overlook key features of the cloud, by lack of flexible security policies, cross-layered defense, multiple control granularities, and open security architectures. This thesis presents VESPA, a self-protection architecture for cloud infrastructures. Flexible coordination between self-protection loops allows enforcing a rich spectrum of security strategies. A multi-plane extensible architecture also enables simple integration of commodity security components.Recently, some of the most powerful attacks against cloud computing infrastructures target the Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM). In many case, the main attack vector is a poorly confined device driver. Current architectures offer no protection against such attacks. This thesis proposes an altogether different approach by presenting KungFuVisor, derived from VESPA, a framework to build self-defending hypervisors. The result is a very flexible self-protection architecture, enabling to enforce dynamically a rich spectrum of remediation actions over different parts of the VMM, also facilitating defense strategy administration. We showed the application to three different protection scheme: virus infection, mobile clouds and hypervisor drivers. Aujourd'hui, les solutions existantes s'adaptent difficilement. Ce mĂ©moire prĂ©sente VESPA, une architecture d'autoprotection pour les infrastructures cloud. VESPA est construit autour de politiques qui peuvent rĂ©guler la sĂ©curitĂ© Ă  plusieurs niveaux. La coordination flexible entre les boucles d'autoprotection rĂ©alise un large spectre de stratĂ©gies de sĂ©curitĂ© comme des dĂ©tections et des rĂ©actions sur plusieurs niveaux. Une architecture extensible multi plans permet d'intĂ©grer simplement des Ă©lĂ©ments dĂ©jĂ  prĂ©sents. Depuis peu, les attaques les plus critiques contre les infrastructures cloud visent la brique la plus sensible: l'hyperviseur. Le vecteur d'attaque principal est un pilote de pĂ©riphĂ©rique mal confinĂ©. Les mĂ©canismes de dĂ©fense mis en jeu sont statiques et difficile Ă  gĂ©rer. Nous proposons une approche diffĂ©rente avec KungFuVisor, un canevas logiciel pour crĂ©er des hyperviseurs autoprotĂ©gĂ©s spĂ©cialisant l'architecture VESPA.
