    Real-time timeline summarisation for high-impact events in Twitter.

    Twitter has become a valuable source of event-related information, namely, breaking news and local event reports. Due to its capability of transmitting information in real-time, Twitter is further exploited for timeline summarisation of high-impact events, such as protests, accidents, natural disasters or disease outbreaks. Such summaries can serve as important event digests where users urgently need information, especially if they are directly affected by the events. In this paper, we study the problem of timeline summarisation of high-impact events that need to be generated in real-time. Our proposed approach includes four stages: classification of realworld events reporting tweets, online incremental clustering, postprocessing and sub-events summarisation. We conduct a comprehensive evaluation of different stages on the “Ebola outbreak” tweet stream, and compare our approach with several baselines, to demonstrate its effectiveness. Our approach can be applied as a replacement of a manually generated timeline and provides early alarms for disaster surveillance

    Macro-micro approach for mining public sociopolitical opinion from social media

    During the past decade, we have witnessed the emergence of social media, which has prominence as a means for the general public to exchange opinions towards a broad range of topics. Furthermore, its social and temporal dimensions make it a rich resource for policy makers and organisations to understand public opinion. In this thesis, we present our research in understanding public opinion on Twitter along three dimensions: sentiment, topics and summary. In the first line of our work, we study how to classify public sentiment on Twitter. We focus on the task of multi-target-specific sentiment recognition on Twitter, and propose an approach which utilises the syntactic information from parse-tree in conjunction with the left-right context of the target. We show the state-of-the-art performance on two datasets including a multi-target Twitter corpus on UK elections which we make public available for the research community. Additionally we also conduct two preliminary studies including cross-domain emotion classification on discourse around arts and cultural experiences, and social spam detection to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of our sentiment corpus. Our second line of work focuses on automatic topical clustering of tweets. Our aim is to group tweets into a number of clusters, with each cluster representing a meaningful topic, story, event or a reason behind a particular choice of sentiment. We explore various ways of tackling this challenge and propose a two-stage hierarchical topic modelling system that is efficient and effective in achieving our goal. Lastly, for our third line of work, we study the task of summarising tweets on common topics, with the goal to provide informative summaries for real-world events/stories or explanation underlying the sentiment expressed towards an issue/entity. As most existing tweet summarisation approaches rely on extractive methods, we propose to apply state-of-the-art neural abstractive summarisation model for tweets. We also tackle the challenge of cross-medium supervised summarisation with no target-medium training resources. To the best of our knowledge, there is no existing work on studying neural abstractive summarisation on tweets. In addition, we present a system for providing interactive visualisation of topic-entity sentiments and the corresponding summaries in chronological order. Throughout our work presented in this thesis, we conduct experiments to evaluate and verify the effectiveness of our proposed models, comparing to relevant baseline methods. Most of our evaluations are quantitative, however, we do perform qualitative analyses where it is appropriate. This thesis provides insights and findings that can be used for better understanding public opinion in social media

    A Ranking Approach to Summarising Twitter Home Timelines

    The rise of social media services has changed the ways in which users can communicate and consume content online. Whilst online social networks allow for fast and convenient delivery of knowledge, users are prone to information overload when too much information is presented for them to read and process. Automatic text summarisation is a tool to help mitigate information overload. In automatic text summarisation, short summaries are generated algorithmically from extended text, such as news articles or scientific papers. This thesis addresses the challenges in applying text summarisation to the Twitter social network. It also goes beyond text, exploiting additional information that is unique to social networks to create summaries which are personal to an intended reader. Unlike previous work in tweet summarisation, the experiments here address the home timelines of readers, which contain the incoming posts from authors to whom they have explicitly subscribed. A novel contribution is made in this work the form of a large gold standard (19,35019,350 tweets), the majority of which will be shared with the research community. The gold standard is a collection of timelines that have been subjectively annotated by the readers to whom they belong, allowing fair evaluation of summaries which are not limited to tweets of general interest, but which are specific to the reader. Where the home timeline is used by professional users for social media analysis, automatic text summarisation can be applied to give results which beat all baselines. In the general case, where no limitation is placed on the types of readers, personalisation features which exploit the relationship between author and reader and the reader's own previous posts, were shown to outperform both automatic text summarisation and all baselines

    Understanding the topics and opinions from social media content

    Social media has become one indispensable part of people’s daily life, as it records and reflects people’s opinions and events of interest, as well as influences people’s perceptions. As the most commonly employed and easily accessed data format on social media, a great deal of the social media textual content is not only factual and objective, but also rich in opinionated information. Thus, besides the topics Internet users are talking about in social media textual content, it is also of great importance to understand the opinions they are expressing. In this thesis, I present my broadly applicable text mining approaches, in order to understand the topics and opinions of user-generated texts on social media, to provide insights about the thoughts of Internet users on entities, events, etc. Specifically, I develop approaches to understand the semantic differences between language-specific editions of Wikipedia, when discussing certain entities from the related topical aspects perspective and the aggregated sentiment bias perspective. Moreover, I employ effective features to detect the reputation-influential sentences for person and company entities in Wikipedia articles, which lead to the detected sentiment bias. Furthermore, I propose neural network models with different levels of attention mechanism, to detect the stances of tweets towards any given target. I also introduce an online timeline generation approach, to detect and summarise the relevant sub-topics in the tweet stream, in order to provide Internet users with some insights about the evolution of major events they are interested in

    Automated data analysis of unstructured grey literature in health research: A mapping review

Given the long lead-times of producing high-quality peer-reviewed health information, this is causing a demand for new ways to provide prompt input for secondary research. To our knowledge, this is the first review of automated data extraction methods or tools for health-related grey literature and soft data, with a focus on (semi)automating horizon scans, health technology assessments (HTA), evidence maps, or other literature reviews. We searched six databases to cover both health- and computer-science literature. After deduplication, 10% of the search results were screened by two reviewers, the remainder was single-screened up to an estimated 95% sensitivity; screening was stopped early after screening an additional 1000 results with no new includes. All full texts were retrieved, screened, and extracted by a single reviewer and 10% were checked in duplicate. We included 84 papers covering automation for health-related social media, internet fora, news, patents, government agencies and charities, or trial registers. From each paper, we extracted data about important functionalities for users of the tool or method; information about the level of support and reliability; and about practical challenges and research gaps. Poor availability of code, data, and usable tools leads to low transparency regarding performance and duplication of work. Financial implications, scalability, integration into downstream workflows, and meaningful evaluations should be carefully planned before starting to develop a tool, given the vast amounts of data and opportunities those tools offer to expedite research

    Context-Aware Message-Level Rumour Detection with Weak Supervision

    Social media has become the main source of all sorts of information beyond a communication medium. Its intrinsic nature can allow a continuous and massive flow of misinformation to make a severe impact worldwide. In particular, rumours emerge unexpectedly and spread quickly. It is challenging to track down their origins and stop their propagation. One of the most ideal solutions to this is to identify rumour-mongering messages as early as possible, which is commonly referred to as "Early Rumour Detection (ERD)". This dissertation focuses on researching ERD on social media by exploiting weak supervision and contextual information. Weak supervision is a branch of ML where noisy and less precise sources (e.g. data patterns) are leveraged to learn limited high-quality labelled data (Ratner et al., 2017). This is intended to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of the hand-labelling of large-scale data. This thesis aims to study whether identifying rumours before they go viral is possible and develop an architecture for ERD at individual post level. To this end, it first explores major bottlenecks of current ERD. It also uncovers a research gap between system design and its applications in the real world, which have received less attention from the research community of ERD. One bottleneck is limited labelled data. Weakly supervised methods to augment limited labelled training data for ERD are introduced. The other bottleneck is enormous amounts of noisy data. A framework unifying burst detection based on temporal signals and burst summarisation is investigated to identify potential rumours (i.e. input to rumour detection models) by filtering out uninformative messages. Finally, a novel method which jointly learns rumour sources and their contexts (i.e. conversational threads) for ERD is proposed. An extensive evaluation setting for ERD systems is also introduced

    Emotional and mental nuances and technological approaches: Optimising Fact-Check dissemination through cognitive reinforcement technique †

    The issue of the dissemination of fake news has been widely addressed in the literature, but the issue of the dissemination of fact checks to debunk fake news has not received sufficient attention. Fake news is tailored to reach a wide audience, a concern that, as this paper shows, does not seem to be present in fact checking. As a result, fact checking, no matter how good it is, fails in its goal of debunking fake news for the general public. This paper addresses this problem with the aim of increasing the effectiveness of the fact checking of online social media posts through the use of cognitive tools, yet grounded in ethical principles. The paper consists of a profile of the prevalence of fact checking in online social media (both from the literature and from field data) and an assessment of the extent to which engagement can be increased by using simple cognitive enhancements in the text of the post.     Towards Personalized and Human-in-the-Loop Document Summarization

    The ubiquitous availability of computing devices and the widespread use of the internet have generated a large amount of data continuously. Therefore, the amount of available information on any given topic is far beyond humans' processing capacity to properly process, causing what is known as information overload. To efficiently cope with large amounts of information and generate content with significant value to users, we require identifying, merging and summarising information. Data summaries can help gather related information and collect it into a shorter format that enables answering complicated questions, gaining new insight and discovering conceptual boundaries. This thesis focuses on three main challenges to alleviate information overload using novel summarisation techniques. It further intends to facilitate the analysis of documents to support personalised information extraction. This thesis separates the research issues into four areas, covering (i) feature engineering in document summarisation, (ii) traditional static and inflexible summaries, (iii) traditional generic summarisation approaches, and (iv) the need for reference summaries. We propose novel approaches to tackle these challenges, by: i)enabling automatic intelligent feature engineering, ii) enabling flexible and interactive summarisation, iii) utilising intelligent and personalised summarisation approaches. The experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed approaches compared to other state-of-the-art models. We further propose solutions to the information overload problem in different domains through summarisation, covering network traffic data, health data and business process data.Comment: PhD thesi

    Should I Care about Your Opinion? : Detection of Opinion Interestingness and Dynamics in Social Media

    In this paper, we describe a set of reusable text processing components for extracting opinionated information from social media, rating it for interestingness, and for detecting opinion events. We have developed applications in GATE to extract named entities, terms and events and to detect opinions about them, which are then used as the starting point for opinion event detection. The opinions are then aggregated over larger sections of text, to give some overall sentiment about topics and documents, and also some degree of information about interestingness based on opinion diversity. We go beyond traditional opinion mining techniques in a number of ways: by focusing on specific opinion-target extraction related to key terms and events, by examining and dealing with a number of specific linguistic phenomena, by analysing and visualising opinion dynamics over time, and by aggregating the opinions in different ways for a more flexible view of the information contained in the documents.EU/27023
