    Face analysis using curve edge maps

    This paper proposes an automatic and real-time system for face analysis, usable in visual communication applications. In this approach, faces are represented with Curve Edge Maps, which are collections of polynomial segments with a convex region. The segments are extracted from edge pixels using an adaptive incremental linear-time fitting algorithm, which is based on constructive polynomial fitting. The face analysis system considers face tracking, face recognition and facial feature detection, using Curve Edge Maps driven by histograms of intensities and histograms of relative positions. When applied to different face databases and video sequences, the average face recognition rate is 95.51%, the average facial feature detection rate is 91.92% and the accuracy in location of the facial features is 2.18% in terms of the size of the face, which is comparable with or better than the results in literature. However, our method has the advantages of simplicity, real-time performance and extensibility to the different aspects of face analysis, such as recognition of facial expressions and talking

    This thesis focuses on Automated Face Tracking, which is a major challenge for applications related to intelligent surveillance, law enforcement, telecommunications, human-computer interactions and virtual reality interfaces. The thesis describes a novel strategy for both face tracking and facial feature detection. Face detection is important because it restricts the field of view and thus reduces the amount of computation for further face recognition or transmission, while facial feature detection is important because it enables face normalization and leads to size invariant face recognition. Resembling the way of human perceiving face and facial features, the proposed face tracker initially utilizes motion as the major cues, then human eyes are searched from the area which likely contains a human face. The contributions of this thesis are threefold. First, we have introduced an effective system architecture including a system supervisor controlling five virtual perceptual sensor processes. Second, we have advanced a hybrid approach for face detection and facial feature extraction. An adapted Hough Transform is introduced in search of human eyes within the candidate face region. Finally, implementation issues are explored when using a low-cost Internet camera under a common Windows environment.     Model-free head pose estimation based on shape factorisation and particle filtering

    This work forms part of the project Eye-Communicate funded by the Malta Council for Science and Technology through the National Research & Innovation Programme (2012) under Research Grant No. R&I-2012-057.Head pose estimation is essential for several applications and is particularly required for head pose-free eye-gaze tracking where estimation of head rotation permits free head movement during tracking. While the literature is broad, the accuracy of recent vision-based head pose estimation methods is contingent upon the availability of training data or accurate initialisation and tracking of specific facial landmarks. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the head pose in real time from the trajectories of a set of feature points spread randomly over the face region, without requiring a training phase or model-fitting of specific facial features. Conversely, without seeking specific facial landmarks, our method exploits the sparse 3-dimensional shape of the surface of interest, recovered via shape and motion factorisation, in combination with particle filtering to correct mistracked feature points and improve upon an initial estimation of the 3-dimensional shape during tracking. In comparison with two additional methods, quantitative results obtained through our model- and landmark-free method yield a reduction in the head pose estimation error for a wide range of head rotation angles.peer-reviewe

    Face modeling for face recognition in the wild.

    Face understanding is considered one of the most important topics in computer vision field since the face is a rich source of information in social interaction. Not only does the face provide information about the identity of people, but also of their membership in broad demographic categories (including sex, race, and age), and about their current emotional state. Facial landmarks extraction is the corner stone in the success of different facial analyses and understanding applications. In this dissertation, a novel facial modeling is designed for facial landmarks detection in unconstrained real life environment from different image modalities including infra-red and visible images. In the proposed facial landmarks detector, a part based model is incorporated with holistic face information. In the part based model, the face is modeled by the appearance of different face part(e.g., right eye, left eye, left eyebrow, nose, mouth) and their geometric relation. The appearance is described by a novel feature referred to as pixel difference feature. This representation is three times faster than the state-of-art in feature representation. On the other hand, to model the geometric relation between the face parts, the complex Bingham distribution is adapted from the statistical community into computer vision for modeling the geometric relationship between the facial elements. The global information is incorporated with the local part model using a regression model. The model results outperform the state-of-art in detecting facial landmarks. The proposed facial landmark detector is tested in two computer vision problems: boosting the performance of face detectors by rejecting pseudo faces and camera steering in multi-camera network. To highlight the applicability of the proposed model for different image modalities, it has been studied in two face understanding applications which are face recognition from visible images and physiological measurements for autistic individuals from thermal images. Recognizing identities from faces under different poses, expressions and lighting conditions from a complex background is an still unsolved problem even with accurate detection of landmark. Therefore, a learning similarity measure is proposed. The proposed measure responds only to the difference in identities and filter illuminations and pose variations. similarity measure makes use of statistical inference in the image plane. Additionally, the pose challenge is tackled by two new approaches: assigning different weights for different face part based on their visibility in image plane at different pose angles and synthesizing virtual facial images for each subject at different poses from single frontal image. The proposed framework is demonstrated to be competitive with top performing state-of-art methods which is evaluated on standard benchmarks in face recognition in the wild. The other framework for the face understanding application, which is a physiological measures for autistic individual from infra-red images. In this framework, accurate detecting and tracking Superficial Temporal Arteria (STA) while the subject is moving, playing, and interacting in social communication is a must. It is very challenging to track and detect STA since the appearance of the STA region changes over time and it is not discriminative enough from other areas in face region. A novel concept in detection, called supporter collaboration, is introduced. In support collaboration, the STA is detected and tracked with the help of face landmarks and geometric constraint.     A graphical model based solution to the facial feature point tracking problem

    In this paper a facial feature point tracker that is motivated by applications such as human-computer interfaces and facial expression analysis systems is proposed. The proposed tracker is based on a graphical model framework. The facial features are tracked through video streams by incorporating statistical relations in time as well as spatial relations between feature points. By exploiting the spatial relationships between feature points, the proposed method provides robustness in real-world conditions such as arbitrary head movements and occlusions. A Gabor feature-based occlusion detector is developed and used to handle occlusions. The performance of the proposed tracker has been evaluated on real video data under various conditions including occluded facial gestures and head movements. It is also compared to two popular methods, one based on Kalman filtering exploiting temporal relations, and the other based on active appearance models (AAM). Improvements provided by the proposed approach are demonstrated through both visual displays and quantitative analysis

    HeadOn: Real-time Reenactment of Human Portrait Videos

    We propose HeadOn, the first real-time source-to-target reenactment approach for complete human portrait videos that enables transfer of torso and head motion, face expression, and eye gaze. Given a short RGB-D video of the target actor, we automatically construct a personalized geometry proxy that embeds a parametric head, eye, and kinematic torso model. A novel real-time reenactment algorithm employs this proxy to photo-realistically map the captured motion from the source actor to the target actor. On top of the coarse geometric proxy, we propose a video-based rendering technique that composites the modified target portrait video via view- and pose-dependent texturing, and creates photo-realistic imagery of the target actor under novel torso and head poses, facial expressions, and gaze directions. To this end, we propose a robust tracking of the face and torso of the source actor. We extensively evaluate our approach and show significant improvements in enabling much greater flexibility in creating realistic reenacted output videos.Comment: Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dg49wv2c_g Presented at Siggraph'1
