    Computer-Mediated Deception: Collective Language-action Cues as Stigmergic Signals for Computational Intelligence

    Collective intelligence is easily observable in group-based or interpersonal pairwise interaction, and is enabled by environment-mediated stigmertic signals. Based on innate ability, human sensors not only sense and coordinate, but also tend to solve problems through these signals. This paper argues the efficacy of computational intelligence for adopting the collective language-action cues of human intelligence as stigmertic signals to differentiate deception. A study was conducted in synchronous computer-mediated communication environment with a dataset collected from 2014 to 2015. An online game was developed to examine the accuracy of certain language-action cues (signs), deceptive actors (agents) during pairwise interaction (environment). The result of a logistic regression analysis demonstrates the computational efficacy of collective language-action cues in differentiating and sensing deception in spontaneous communication. This study contributes to the computational modeling in adapting human intelligence as a base to attribute computer-mediated deception

    Geschlechterunterschiede in der Reaktion auf visuelle Harmonie: Die Rolle von biologischen und sozialen Faktoren

    Nach den Prinzipien der Gestaltpsychologie kombinieren Designer bei der Gestaltung von Produkten und Verpackungen eine Vielzahl an Designelementen, um ein ästhetisches „Ganzes“ zu kreieren. Ein entscheidender Designfaktor ist hierbei die visuelle Harmonie. Der grundsätzlich positiv angenommene Effekt visueller Harmonie scheint jedoch nicht universell zu sein, sondern ist von individuellen Unterschieden geprägt. So existieren Hinweise, dass vor allem das Geschlecht einer Person eine starke moderierende Wirkung auf designbasierte Präferenzen ausübt. Bisher herrschte jedoch Unklarheit darüber, ob, wie, warum und wann das Geschlecht – als biologisches oder soziales Konzept – die ästhetische Beurteilung von harmonischem Design beeinflusst. Insgesamt beinhaltet diese Arbeit sieben empirische Studien in zwei Ländern (USA und Deutschland), welche die Effekte und Mechanismen mit verschiedenen Stimuli und durch den Einsatz vielfältiger Methoden getestet haben. Ziel der ersten Studie war es, die Struktur des holistischen Designfaktors Harmonie besser zu verstehen und auf messbare Elemente herunterzubrechen. Studie 2 und Studie 3 untersuchten den Einfluss visueller Harmonie auf das Attraktivitätsurteil sowie den moderierenden Effekt des biologischen Geschlechts auf diese Beziehung. Studie 4 (Fluenz der Verarbeitung) und Studie 5 (Selbstkongruenz) testeten mögliche zugrundeliegende Erklärungsprozesse für Unterschiede sowie die moderierende Rolle der sozialen Geschlechtsidentität. Durch den Einsatz des impliziten Assoziationstests (IAT) in Studie 6 wurde deutlich, dass implizite und explizite Ergebnisse nicht übereinstimmen. Auf dieser Erkenntnis aufbauend, untersuchte Studie 7 die Rolle der sozialen Erwartungen in geschlechtsbezogenen Reaktionen auf visuelles Design, insbesondere des situativen Kontexts. Diese Erkenntnisse helfen Marketingverantwortlichen dabei, das Erscheinungsbild von Produkten und Verpackungen zu optimieren und zielgruppengerecht zu positionieren

    Persuasion in the context of a psychic reading

    This thesis considers the claim that although there is little reason on the basis of experimental evidence to believe that psychic readers have paranormal access to information about their clients, nevertheless individuals are persuaded that such claimants have demonstrated that they possess psychic abilities. A random sample survey of 1,000 residents of Edinburgh district did find support for the claim that the general population is sympathetic to the claims made by psychics. These findings are reconciled with reference to Pseudopsychics' claimed ability to simulate psychic abilities through the use of a technique known as cold reading. A model is proposed, informed by a review of pseudopsychic literature and a pilot study with a known cold reader, which suggests that cold reading actually consists of a number of discrete but interdependent techniques. Central to the model is that much of the reading is dependent on the Bamum effect for success. Experimental work assessed the previously untested assertion that pseudopsychic statements are capable of inducing Barnum acceptance, and found that such items perform in a similar manner to classical Barnum statements. These statements were used to expand the Barnum pool so that the nature and causes of Barnum acceptance could be studied more systematically. One study explored those properties inherent in Barnum statements which are regarded as contributing to their ready acceptance as true of Ss. It was found that acceptance of items could be predicted on the basis of independent judges' ratings of eight statement properties.Two further studies presented Bamum items as pseudo-feedback from an ostensible psychic reading. These were conducted to explore a proposed model which suggested that Ss accept items because of an artifact of cognitive processing, whereby Barnum statements are not assessed for accuracy in their given form, but rather are interpreted by the client in terms of their own particular circumstances and concerns. Predictions were made on the basis of the artifact model about Ss' recall for the content of the reading, and provided some support for this characterisation of the effect. A final study was conducted to assess the contention that experimental tests of psychic readers misrepresent the function of the reading, and makes the suggestion that with regard to psychic functioning, the client may actually be an active participant. The implications of these results for testing and evaluating psychic readers are discussed

    Interactive Technologies for the Public Sphere Toward a Theory of Critical Creative Technology

    Digital media cultural practices continue to address the social, cultural and aesthetic contexts of the global information economy, perhaps better called ecology, by inventing new methods and genres that encourage interactive engagement, collaboration, exploration and learning. The theoretical framework for creative critical technology evolved from the confluence of the arts, human computer interaction, and critical theories of technology. Molding this nascent theoretical framework from these seemingly disparate disciplines was a reflexive process where the influence of each component on each other spiraled into the theory and practice as illustrated through the Constructed Narratives project. Research that evolves from an arts perspective encourages experimental processes of making as a method for defining research principles. The traditional reductionist approach to research requires that all confounding variables are eliminated or silenced using methods of statistics. However, that noise in the data, those confounding variables provide the rich context, media, and processes by which creative practices thrive. As research in the arts gains recognition for its contributions of new knowledge, the traditional reductive practice in search of general principles will be respectfully joined by methodologies for defining living principles that celebrate and build from the confounding variables, the data noise. The movement to develop research methodologies from the noisy edges of human interaction have been explored in the research and practices of ludic design and ambiguity (Gaver, 2003); affective gap (Sengers et al., 2005b; 2006); embodied interaction (Dourish, 2001); the felt life (McCarthy & Wright, 2004); and reflective HCI (Dourish, et al., 2004). The theory of critical creative technology examines the relationships between critical theories of technology, society and aesthetics, information technologies and contemporary practices in interaction design and creative digital media. The theory of critical creative technology is aligned with theories and practices in social navigation (Dourish, 1999) and community-based interactive systems (Stathis, 1999) in the development of smart appliances and network systems that support people in engaging in social activities, promoting communication and enhancing the potential for learning in a community-based environment. The theory of critical creative technology amends these community-based and collaborative design theories by emphasizing methods to facilitate face-to-face dialogical interaction when the exchange of ideas, observations, dreams, concerns, and celebrations may be silenced by societal norms about how to engage others in public spaces. The Constructed Narratives project is an experiment in the design of a critical creative technology that emphasizes the collaborative construction of new knowledge about one's lived world through computer-supported collaborative play (CSCP). To construct is to creatively invent one's world by engaging in creative decision-making, problem solving and acts of negotiation. The metaphor of construction is used to demonstrate how a simple artefact - a building block - can provide an interactive platform to support discourse between collaborating participants. The technical goal for this project was the development of a software and hardware platform for the design of critical creative technology applications that can process a dynamic flow of logistical and profile data from multiple users to be used in applications that facilitate dialogue between people in a real-time playful interactive experience
