    High-performance cutting of micro patterns

    This research report presents an innovative piezo-actuated fast tool servo (FTS) for milling operations introducing the highperformance cutting of micro patterns. The outstanding dynamics of the tool enable a highly dynamic depth of cut variation during the cutting process. Unlike commercial technologies, such as ultrasonic tools, the presented device does not oscillate in resonance, but controlled. Its first natural resonance frequency of ?0 > 4.5 kHz and its capability to provide a maximum amplitude of ▵lmax > 30 microns establish the basis to cut micro patterns, while using process parameters applied in real-life industrial processes.DFG/CRC/65

    Developing Abrasion Test Standards for Evaluating Lunar Construction Materials

    Operational issues encountered by Apollo astronauts relating to lunar dust were catalogued, including material abrasion that resulted in scratches and wear on spacesuit components, ultimately impacting visibility, joint mobility and pressure retention. Standard methods are being developed to measure abrasive wear on candidate construction materials to be used for spacesuits, spacecraft, and robotics. Calibration tests were conducted using a standard diamond stylus scratch tip on the common spacecraft structure aluminum, Al 6061-T6. Custom tips were fabricated from terrestrial counterparts of lunar minerals for scratching Al 6061-T6 and comparing to standard diamond scratches. Considerations are offered for how to apply standards when selecting materials and developing dust mitigation strategies for lunar architecture elements

    DEVELOPMENT OF A LOW COST PRECISION POLISHING MACHINE BASED ON PARALLEL KINEMATIC SYSTEM

    The increasing demand on mass production of high precision parts, has pushed the precision manufacturing industry to develop reliable precision finishing processes such as Bonnet polishing to address market requirements. Indeed, the nature of the surface to be polished plays an important role in the design of a possible polishing machine. A gap within the research in polishing for precision industry needs has been identified. Small parts with <50mm x 50mm and possible freeform curvature containing small slopes cannot be polished with available bonnet polishing (BP) processes on market. This is caused by the tool head size and the tool holder being bigger than part curvature or the part itself. Although, the BP process has a huge potential for surface roughness improvement and form accuracy, it is generally seen in industry as an expensive solution for a non-deterministic finishing process. Therefore, this project has sought to develop a BP machine to cover the gap with an innovative and inexpensive design. In order to develop a machine which responded to the market expectations all possible requirements were listed from a customer point of view. Based on the requirement, a machine concept was produced. Market analysis helped to identify sub-systems of the machine. FEA analysis of the design was performed to check for stress distribution and displacement due to its own mass. Additional assembly parts are designed and a prototype of the machine was produced. The designed machine is tested for its ability as precision polishing machine. Flat surfaces of P20 tool steel were targets for polishing to nanometric surface finishes. Empirical experiments helped to identify parameters which influenced the surface roughness. Taguchi method were then used to optimise the parameters for better surface roughness. Optimum parameters conditions helped to reach less than 10 nm Ra systematically and repeatedly. The samples were also polished using re-circulating slurry techniques, and the obtained results were discussed. Further, pre polishing, Grolishing processes capable of improving surface roughness from ground finish to mirror like finish were developed for cost effective manufacturing procedures. The material removal was analysed to identify parameters capable of improving surface roughness over a step grolishing process. Two grolishing procedures were developed. Both processes produced nanometric range surface finishes. Other variations in results were compared and discussed. Although, machine axis has the ability to produce freeform movement, tool holders need to be improved to facilitate the identification of the distance between tool origin and workpiece origin. Therefore, a new spindle holder assembly is produced to hold the tool and an optical measurement device DRI used to evaluate accurately the distance separating the tool-workpiece origin and further align the workpiece inclination with respect to the machine axis. A CAD-CAM package is also developed to generate programme capable of performing freeform curvature

    Key challenges in agent-based modelling for geo-spatial simulation

    Agent-based modelling (ABM) is fast becoming the dominant paradigm in social simulation due primarily to a worldview that suggests that complex systems emerge from the bottom-up, are highly decentralised, and are composed of a multitude of heterogeneous objects called agents. These agents act with some purpose and their interaction, usually through time and space, generates emergent order, often at higher levels than those at which such agents operate. ABM however raises as many challenges as it seeks to resolve. It is the purpose of this paper to catalogue these challenges and to illustrate them using three somewhat different agent-based models applied to city systems. The seven challenges we pose involve: the purpose for which the model is built, the extent to which the model is rooted in independent theory, the extent to which the model can be replicated, the ways the model might be verified, calibrated and validated, the way model dynamics are represented in terms of agent interactions, the extent to which the model is operational, and the way the model can be communicated and shared with others. Once catalogued, we then illustrate these challenges with a pedestrian model for emergency evacuation in central London, a hypothetical model of residential segregation tuned to London data which elaborates the standard Schelling (1971) model, and an agent-based residential location built according to spatial interactions principles, calibrated to trip data for Greater London. The ambiguities posed by this new style of modelling are drawn out as conclusions

    CHARACTERIZATION OF ENGINEERED SURFACES

    In the recent years there has been an increasing interest in manufacturing products where surface topography plays a functional role. These surfaces are called engineered surfaces and are used in a variety of industries like semi conductor, data storage, micro- optics, MEMS etc. Engineered products are designed, manufactured and inspected to meet a variety of specifications such as size, position, geometry and surface finish to control the physical, chemical, optical and electrical properties of the surface. As the manufacturing industry strive towards shrinking form factor resulting in miniaturization of surface features, measurement of such micro and nanometer scale surfaces is becoming more challenging. Great strides have been made in the area of instrumentation to capture surface data, but the area of algorithms and procedures to determine form, size and orientation information of surface features still lacks the advancement needed to support the characterization requirements of R&amp;D and high volume manufacturing. This dissertation addresses the development of fast and intelligent surface scanning algorithms and methodologies for engineered surfaces to determine form, size and orientation of significant surface features. Object recognition techniques are used to identify the surface features and CMM type fitting algorithms are applied to calculate the dimensions of the features. Recipes can be created to automate the characterization and process multiple features simultaneously. The developed methodologies are integrated into a surface analysis toolbox developed in MATLAB environment. The deployment of the developed application on the web is demonstrated

    A Systematic Literature Survey of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Based Structural Health Monitoring

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are being employed in a multitude of civil applications owing to their ease of use, low maintenance, affordability, high-mobility, and ability to hover. UAVs are being utilized for real-time monitoring of road traffic, providing wireless coverage, remote sensing, search and rescue operations, delivery of goods, security and surveillance, precision agriculture, and civil infrastructure inspection. They are the next big revolution in technology and civil infrastructure, and it is expected to dominate more than $45 billion market value. The thesis surveys the UAV assisted Structural Health Monitoring or SHM literature over the last decade and categorize UAVs based on their aerodynamics, payload, design of build, and its applications. Further, the thesis presents the payload product line to facilitate the SHM tasks, details the different applications of UAVs exploited in the last decade to support civil structures, and discusses the critical challenges faced in UASHM applications across various domains. Finally, the thesis presents two artificial neural network-based structural damage detection models and conducts a detailed performance evaluation on multiple platforms like edge computing and cloud computing
