Performance analysis using timed Petri Nets
Petri Nets have been successfully used to model and evaluate the performance of distributed systems. Several researchers have extended the basic Petri Net model to include time, and have demonstrated that restricted classes of Petri Nets can be analyzed efficiently. Unfortunately, the restrictions prohibit the techniques from being applied to many interesting systems, e.g. communication protocols. This paper proposes a version of timed Petri Nets which accurately models communication protocols, and which can be analyzed using Timed Reachability Graphs. Procedures for constructing and analyzing these graphs are presented. The analysis is shown to be applicable to a larger class of Timed Petri Nets than previously thought. The model and the analysis technique are demonstrated using a simple communication protocol
Reachability analysis of first-order definable pushdown systems
We study pushdown systems where control states, stack alphabet, and
transition relation, instead of being finite, are first-order definable in a
fixed countably-infinite structure. We show that the reachability analysis can
be addressed with the well-known saturation technique for the wide class of
oligomorphic structures. Moreover, for the more restrictive homogeneous
structures, we are able to give concrete complexity upper bounds. We show ample
applicability of our technique by presenting several concrete examples of
homogeneous structures, subsuming, with optimal complexity, known results from
the literature. We show that infinitely many such examples of homogeneous
structures can be obtained with the classical wreath product construction.Comment: to appear in CSL'1
Cyclic LTI systems in digital signal processing
Cyclic signal processing refers to situations where all the time indices are interpreted modulo some integer L. In such cases, the frequency domain is defined as a uniform discrete grid (as in L-point DFT). This offers more freedom in theoretical as well as design aspects. While circular convolution has been the centerpiece of many algorithms in signal processing for decades, such freedom, especially from the viewpoint of linear system theory, has not been studied in the past. In this paper, we introduce the fundamentals of cyclic multirate systems and filter banks, presenting several important differences between the cyclic and noncyclic cases. Cyclic systems with allpass and paraunitary properties are studied. The paraunitary interpolation problem is introduced, and it is shown that the interpolation does not always succeed. State-space descriptions of cyclic LTI systems are introduced, and the notions of reachability and observability of state equations are revisited. It is shown that unlike in traditional linear systems, these two notions are not related to the system minimality in a simple way. Throughout the paper, a number of open problems are pointed out from the perspective of the signal processor as well as the system theorist
Analysis of Petri Nets and Transition Systems
This paper describes a stand-alone, no-frills tool supporting the analysis of
(labelled) place/transition Petri nets and the synthesis of labelled transition
systems into Petri nets. It is implemented as a collection of independent,
dedicated algorithms which have been designed to operate modularly, portably,

On Zone-Based Analysis of Duration Probabilistic Automata
We propose an extension of the zone-based algorithmics for analyzing timed
automata to handle systems where timing uncertainty is considered as
probabilistic rather than set-theoretic. We study duration probabilistic
automata (DPA), expressing multiple parallel processes admitting memoryfull
continuously-distributed durations. For this model we develop an extension of
the zone-based forward reachability algorithm whose successor operator is a
density transformer, thus providing a solution to verification and performance
evaluation problems concerning acyclic DPA (or the bounded-horizon behavior of

Verification of Hierarchical Artifact Systems
Data-driven workflows, of which IBM's Business Artifacts are a prime
exponent, have been successfully deployed in practice, adopted in industrial
standards, and have spawned a rich body of research in academia, focused
primarily on static analysis. The present work represents a significant advance
on the problem of artifact verification, by considering a much richer and more
realistic model than in previous work, incorporating core elements of IBM's
successful Guard-Stage-Milestone model. In particular, the model features task
hierarchy, concurrency, and richer artifact data. It also allows database key
and foreign key dependencies, as well as arithmetic constraints. The results
show decidability of verification and establish its complexity, making use of
novel techniques including a hierarchy of Vector Addition Systems and a variant

Reachability Analysis of Communicating Pushdown Systems
The reachability analysis of recursive programs that communicate
asynchronously over reliable FIFO channels calls for restrictions to ensure
decidability. Our first result characterizes communication topologies with a
decidable reachability problem restricted to eager runs (i.e., runs where
messages are either received immediately after being sent, or never received).
The problem is EXPTIME-complete in the decidable case. The second result is a
doubly exponential time algorithm for bounded context analysis in this setting,
together with a matching lower bound. Both results extend and improve previous
work from La Torre et al
Algorithms and Conditional Lower Bounds for Planning Problems
We consider planning problems for graphs, Markov decision processes (MDPs),
and games on graphs. While graphs represent the most basic planning model, MDPs
represent interaction with nature and games on graphs represent interaction
with an adversarial environment. We consider two planning problems where there
are k different target sets, and the problems are as follows: (a) the coverage
problem asks whether there is a plan for each individual target set, and (b)
the sequential target reachability problem asks whether the targets can be
reached in sequence. For the coverage problem, we present a linear-time
algorithm for graphs and quadratic conditional lower bound for MDPs and games
on graphs. For the sequential target problem, we present a linear-time
algorithm for graphs, a sub-quadratic algorithm for MDPs, and a quadratic
conditional lower bound for games on graphs. Our results with conditional lower
bounds establish (i) model-separation results showing that for the coverage
problem MDPs and games on graphs are harder than graphs and for the sequential
reachability problem games on graphs are harder than MDPs and graphs; (ii)
objective-separation results showing that for MDPs the coverage problem is
