A Rapid Prototyping Environment for Wireless Communication Embedded Systems

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a rapid prototyping methodology which overcomes important barriers in the design and implementation of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and systems on embedded hardware platforms, such as cellular phones. This paper describes rapid prototyping in terms of a simulation/prototype bridge and in terms of appropriate language design. The simulation/prototype bridge combines the strengths of simulation and of prototyping, allowing the designer to develop and evaluate next-generation communications systems, partly in simulation on a host computer and partly as a prototype on embedded hardware. Appropriate language design allows designers to express a communications system as a block diagram, in which each block represents an algorithm specified by a set of equations. Software tools developed for this paper implement both concepts, and have been successfully used in the development of a next-generation code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular wireless communications system.NokiaTexas InstrumentsThe Texas Advanced Technology ProgramNational Science Foundatio

Rapid Flight Control Prototyping - Steps Toward Cooperative Mission-Oriented Capabilities

    Get PDF
The paper describes the latest advancements in the development of the Rapid Flight Control Prototyping system that were motivated primarily by the need to enable cooperative missions of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles and to enhance the capabilities of human operators to design and oversee the collaborative behaviors of multiple heterogeneous UAVs. The evolution of the system is driven by the mission level objectives and supported on one hand by the progress in miniature sensors, computational power, communication and portable energy technologies and on the other hand by the advanced capabilities of embedded control and communication-oriented software. As a result the developed system enables rapid design, onboard integration and in-flight verification of multiple UAV collaborative concepts that seemed impossible just a couple of years ago. Advantages of the designed system are illustrated by a couple of scenarios that were recently developed and verified in flight by multiple cooperating UAVs. The paper concentrates on presenting the motivation and the conceptual design ideas which drive the evolution of the flight prototyping platform.Evolution of RFCPS system has been funded in part by the National Air and Space Administration under Contracts NNX08BA64A, NNX08BA65A, NNX08AB97A, NNX08AC81A, and NNL08AA12I; ARO under Contract No.W911NF-06-1-0330, the USSOCOM/NPS Field Experimentation Cooperative, the Office of Naval Research under Contract N00014-05-1-0828

Rapid Prototyping of Embedded Vision Systems: Embedding Computer Vision Applications into Low-Power Heterogeneous Architectures

    Get PDF
Embedded vision is a disruptive new technology in the vision industry. It is a revolutionary concept with far reaching implications, and it is opening up new applications and shaping the future of entire industries. It is applied in self-driving cars, autonomous vehicles in agriculture, digital dermascopes that help specialists make more accurate diagnoses, among many other unique and cutting-edge applications. The design of such systems gives rise to new challenges for embedded Software developers. Embedded vision applications are characterized by stringent performance constraints to guarantee real-time behaviours and, at the same time, energy constraints to save battery on the mobile platforms. In this paper, we address such challenges by proposing an overall view of the problem and by analysing current solutions. We present our last results on embedded vision design automation over two main aspects: the adoption of the model-based paradigm for the embedded vision rapid prototyping, and the application of heterogeneous programming languages to improve the system performance. The paper presents our recent results on the design of a localization and mapping application combined with image recognition based on deep learning optimized for an NVIDIA Jetson TX2

Extending OpenVX for Model-based Design of Embedded Vision Applications

Developing computer vision applications for lowpower heterogeneous systems is increasingly gaining interest in the embedded systems community. Even more interesting is the tuning of such embedded software for the target architecture when this is driven by multiple constraints (e.g., performance, peak power, energy consumption). Indeed, developers frequently run into system-level inefficiencies and bottlenecks that can not be quickly addressed by traditional methods. In this context OpenVX has been proposed as the standard platform to develop portable, optimized and powerefficient applications for vision algorithms targeting embedded systems. Nevertheless, adopting OpenVX for rapid prototyping, early algorithm parametrization and validation of complex embedded applications is a very challenging task. This paper presents a methodology to integrate a model-based design environment to OpenVX. The methodology allows applying Matlab/Simulink for the model-based design, parametrization, and validation of computer vision applications. Then, it allows for the automatic synthesis of the application model into an OpenVX description for the hardware and constraints-aware application tuning. Experimental results have been conducted with an application for digital image stabilization developed through Simulink and, then, automatically synthesized into OpenVX-VisionWorks code for an NVIDIA Jetson TX1 boar

High-Level Design for Ultra-Fast Software Defined Radio Prototyping on Multi-Processors Heterogeneous Platforms

International audienceThe design of Software Defined Radio (SDR) equipments (terminals, base stations, etc.) is still very challenging. We propose here a design methodology for ultra-fast prototyping on heterogeneous platforms made of GPPs (General Purpose Processors), DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array). Lying on a component-based approach, the methodology mainly aims at automating as much as possible the design from an algorithmic validation to a multi-processing heterogeneous implementation. The proposed methodology is based on the SynDEx CAD design approach, which was originally dedicated to multi-GPPs networks. We show how this was changed so that it is made appropriate with an embedded context of DSP. The implication of FPGAs is then addressed and integrated in the design approach with very little restrictions. Apart from a manual HW/SW partitioning, all other operations may be kept automatic in a heterogeneous processing context. The targeted granularity of the components, which are to be assembled in the design flow, is roughly the same size as that of a FFT, a filter or a Viterbi decoder for instance. The re-use of third party or pre-developed IPs is a basis for this design approach. Thanks to the proposed design methodology it is possible to port "ultra" fast a radio application over several platforms. In addition, the proposed design methodology is not restricted to SDR equipment design, and can be useful for any real-time embedded heterogeneous design in a prototyping context

Virtual Prototyping through Co-simulation of a Cartesian Plotter

This paper shows a model-based design trajectory for the development of real-time embedded control software using virtual prototyping. As a test case, a Cartesian plotter is designed. Functional correctness of the plotter software has been ensured by means of co-simulation using a virtual prototype before deploying it on target. Except for the interface implementation, the software that is used in the co-simulation is identical to the software that is compiled to run on the target computing platform. Virtual prototyping is especially important if the real target can damage itself if it is operated outside its safe operation zone or when prototypes are not yet available for testing. The co-simulation of the software against a virtual prototype resulted in a first-time-right deployment on the real target
