Simultaneous Positioning and Communications: Hybrid Radio Architecture, Estimation Techniques, and Experimental Validation
abstract: Limited spectral access motivates technologies that adapt to diminishing resources and increasingly cluttered environments. A joint positioning-communications system is designed and implemented on \acf{COTS} hardware. This system enables simultaneous positioning of, and communications between, nodes in a distributed network of base-stations and unmanned aerial systems (UASs). This technology offers extreme ranging precision ( 5 cm) with minimal bandwidth (10 MHz), a secure communications link to protect against cyberattacks, a small form factor that enables integration into numerous platforms, and minimal resource consumption which supports high-density networks. The positioning and communications tasks are performed simultaneously with a single, co-use waveform, which efficiently utilizes limited resources and supports higher user densities. The positioning task uses a cooperative, point-to-point synchronization protocol to estimate the relative position and orientation of all users within the network. The communications task distributes positioning information between users and secures the positioning task against cyberattacks. This high-performance system is enabled by advanced time-of-arrival estimation techniques and a modern phase-accurate distributed coherence synchronization algorithm. This technology may be installed in ground-stations, ground vehicles, unmanned aerial systems, and airborne vehicles, enabling a highly-mobile, re-configurable network with numerous applications.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
Data-driven Integrated Sensing and Communication: Recent Advances, Challenges, and Future Prospects
Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), combined with data-driven
approaches, has emerged as a highly significant field, garnering considerable
attention from academia and industry. Its potential to enable wide-scale
applications in the future sixth-generation (6G) networks has led to extensive
recent research efforts. Machine learning (ML) techniques, including
-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), deep learning (DL)
architectures, and reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, have been deployed
to address various design aspects of ISAC and its diverse applications.
Therefore, this paper aims to explore integrating various ML techniques into
ISAC systems, covering various applications. These applications span
intelligent vehicular networks, encompassing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
and autonomous cars, as well as radar applications, localization and tracking,
millimeter wave (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) communication, and beamforming.
The contributions of this paper lie in its comprehensive survey of ML-based
works in the ISAC domain and its identification of challenges and future
research directions. By synthesizing the existing knowledge and proposing new
research avenues, this survey serves as a valuable resource for researchers,
practitioners, and stakeholders involved in advancing the capabilities of ISAC

OFDM Waveform Optimisation for Joint Communications and Sensing
Radar systems are radios to sense objects in their surrounding environment. These operate at a defined set of frequency ranges. Communication systems are used to transfer information between two points. In the present day, proliferation of mobile devices and the advancement of technology have led to communication systems being ubiquitous. This has made these systems to operate at the frequency bands already used by the radar systems. Thus, the communication signal interferes a radar receiver and vice versa, degrading performance of both systems. Different methods have been proposed to combat this phenomenon. One of the novel topics in this is the RF convergence, where a given bandwidth is used jointly by both systems. A differentiation criterion must be adopted between the two systems so that a receiver is able to separately extract radar and communication signals. The hardware convergence due to the emergence of software-defined radios also motivated a single system be used for both radar and communication.
A joint waveform is adopted for both radar and communication systems, as the transmit signal. As orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform is the most prominent in mobile communications, it is selected as the joint waveform. Considering practical cellular communication systems adopting OFDM, there often exist unused subcarriers within OFDM symbols. These can be filled up with arbitrary data to improve the performance of the radar system. This is the approach used, where the filling up is performed through an optimisation algorithm. The filled subcarriers are termed as radar subcarriers while the rest as communication subcarriers, throughout the thesis.
The optimisation problem minimises the Cramer--Rao lower bounds of the delay and Doppler estimates made by the radar system subject to a set of constraints. It also outputs the indices of the radar and communication subcarriers within an OFDM symbol, which minimise the lower bounds. The first constraint allocates power between radar and communication subcarriers depending on their subcarrier ratio in an OFDM symbol. The second constraint ensures the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the joint waveform has an acceptable level of PAPR.
The results show that the optimised waveform provides significant improvement in the Cramer--Rao lower bounds compared with the unoptimised waveform. In compensation for this, the power allocated to the communication subcarriers needs to be reduced. Thus, improving the performances of the radar and communication systems are a trade-off. It is also observed that for the minimum lower bounds, radar subcarriers need to be placed at the two edges of an OFDM symbol. Optimisation is also seen to improve the estimation performance of a maximum likelihood estimator, concluding that optimising the subcarriers to minimise a theoretical bound enables to achieve improvement for practical systems
Adaptive OFDM Radar for Target Detection and Tracking
We develop algorithms to detect and track targets by employing a wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing: OFDM) radar signal. The frequency diversity of the OFDM signal improves the sensing performance since the scattering centers of a target resonate variably at different frequencies. In addition, being a wideband signal, OFDM improves the range resolution and provides spectral efficiency. We first design the spectrum of the OFDM signal to improve the radar\u27s wideband ambiguity function. Our designed waveform enhances the range resolution and motivates us to use adaptive OFDM waveform in specific problems, such as the detection and tracking of targets. We develop methods for detecting a moving target in the presence of multipath, which exist, for example, in urban environments. We exploit the multipath reflections by utilizing different Doppler shifts. We analytically evaluate the asymptotic performance of the detector and adaptively design the OFDM waveform, by maximizing the noncentrality-parameter expression, to further improve the detection performance. Next, we transform the detection problem into the task of a sparse-signal estimation by making use of the sparsity of multiple paths. We propose an efficient sparse-recovery algorithm by employing a collection of multiple small Dantzig selectors, and analytically compute the reconstruction performance in terms of the -constrained minimal singular value. We solve a constrained multi-objective optimization algorithm to design the OFDM waveform and infer that the resultant signal-energy distribution is in proportion to the distribution of the target energy across different subcarriers. Then, we develop tracking methods for both a single and multiple targets. We propose an tracking method for a low-grazing angle target by realistically modeling different physical and statistical effects, such as the meteorological conditions in the troposphere, curved surface of the earth, and roughness of the sea-surface. To further enhance the tracking performance, we integrate a maximum mutual information based waveform design technique into the tracker. To track multiple targets, we exploit the inherent sparsity on the delay-Doppler plane to develop an computationally efficient procedure. For computational efficiency, we use more prior information to dynamically partition a small portion of the delay-Doppler plane. We utilize the block-sparsity property to propose a block version of the CoSaMP algorithm in the tracking filter
Deterministic Signal Processing Techniques for OFDM-Based Radar Sensing: An Overview
In this manuscript, we analyze the most relevant classes of deterministic signal processing methods currently available for the detection and the estimation of multiple targets in a joint communication and sensing system employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. Our objective is offering a fair comparison of the available technical options in terms of required computational complexity and accuracy in both range and Doppler estimation. Our numerical results, obtained in various scenarios, evidence that distinct algorithms can achieve a substantially different accuracy-complexity trade-off
Millimeter-wave Mobile Sensing and Environment Mapping: Models, Algorithms and Validation
Integrating efficient connectivity, positioning and sensing functionalities
into 5G New Radio (NR) and beyond mobile cellular systems is one timely
research paradigm, especially at mm-wave and sub-THz bands. In this article, we
address the radio-based sensing and environment mapping prospect with specific
emphasis on the user equipment (UE) side. We first describe an efficient
l1-regularized least-squares (LS) approach to obtain sparse range--angle charts
at individual measurement or sensing locations. For the subsequent environment
mapping, we then introduce a novel state model for mapping diffuse and specular
scattering, which allows efficient tracking of individual scatterers over time
using interacting multiple model (IMM) extended Kalman filter and smoother. We
provide extensive numerical indoor mapping results at the 28~GHz band deploying
OFDM-based 5G NR uplink waveform with 400~MHz channel bandwidth, covering both
accurate ray-tracing based as well as actual RF measurement results. The
results illustrate the superiority of the dynamic tracking-based solutions,
compared to static reference methods, while overall demonstrate the excellent
prospects of radio-based mobile environment sensing and mapping in future
mm-wave networks
