    SPLASH: The Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl -- Data Description & Release

    We present the full data release for the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH), a sensitive, unbiased single-dish survey of the Southern Galactic Plane in all four ground-state transitions of the OH radical at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720 MHz. The survey covers the inner Galactic Plane, Central Molecular Zone and Galactic Centre over the range ∣b∣<|b|< 2∘^{\circ}, 332∘^{\circ} <l<< l < 10∘^{\circ}, with a small extension between 2∘^{\circ} <b<< b < 6∘^{\circ}, 358∘^{\circ} <l<< l < 4∘^{\circ}. SPLASH is the most sensitive large-scale survey of OH to-date, reaching a characteristic root-mean-square sensitivity of ∼15\sim15 mK for an effective velocity resolution of ∼0.9\sim0.9 km/s. The spectral line datacubes are optimised for the analysis of extended, quasi-thermal OH, but also contain numerous maser sources, which have been confirmed interferometrically and published elsewhere. We also present radio continuum images at 1612, 1666 and 1720 MHz. Based on initial comparisons with 12^{12}CO(J=1-0), we find that OH rarely extends outside CO cloud boundaries in our data, but suggest that large variations in CO-to-OH brightness temperature ratios may reflect differences in the total gas column density traced by each. Column density estimation in the complex, continuum-bright Inner Galaxy is a challenge, and we demonstrate how failure to appropriately model sub-beam structure and the line-of-sight source distribution can lead to order-of-magnitude errors. Anomalous excitation of the 1612 and 1720 MHz satellite lines is ubiquitous in the inner Galaxy, but is disabled by line overlap in and around the Central Molecular Zone.Comment: Main paper: 22 pages, 15 figures.     searching for local particularities in the center of the Milky Way and extragalactic nuclei at high angular resolution

    All projects aim at pushing the limits of our knowledge about the interaction between a galaxy and a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at its center. The development of a new instrument can be as valuable as combining different datasets. I follow both approaches and developed projects which deal with new instrumentation and telescope technology, combine datasets from different wavelengths and resolutions, and incorporate recent theoretical models and predictions, which can be verified empirically. The first two of the six chapters compile astrophysical and technical background of the individual projects, which are presented in the following four chapters. While the first project (Chapter 3) deals with observations of the innermost parsec of our Galaxy, Chapter 4 presents data of the inner kpc of an active galaxy. The subjects of Chapters 5 and 6 are very luminous AGN/host systems, so-called QSOs. Whereas Chapter 5 presents global, spatially unresolved properties of SMBH/host systems, the radio jet, analyzed in the final Chapter 6, combines all size scales. It is investigated from close to its origin out to several kpc. The accretion onto the black hole of the Milky Way (Chapter 3) is extremely inefficient and the SMBH possibly interacts dominantly via tidal forces only. The next discussed system (Chapter 4) is the prototype of moderately luminous Seyfert 2 AGN, NGC 1068. Here a strong local influence of the nuclear X-ray radiation is observed. Chapter 5 deals with the possible global importance of radiative interaction between highly luminous QSO AGN and the host. The radio jet in Chapte 6 definitely shows signs of interaction with the matter of its host several kpc away from the nucleus.     Deflection characterisation of rotary systems using a ground-based radar

    In the last two decades, an increase in large rotary machines/systems has been witnessed. To ensure safe operation of these systems especially due to extreme stress caused by centrifugal forces as well as the wind or water loadings, regular structural health monitoring (SHM) of the unbalanced parameters, particularly at the blade tips is necessary. For this, the use of non-contact sensors provides the most appropriate approach; however, millimetric out-of-plane deflection monitoring using non-contact sensors at distances &gt;1 m has not been comprehensively addressed for rotary systems, like wind turbines. This study presents a modelling environment to simulate radar returns to analyse rotary systems. Employing Sammon mapping as a dimensionality reduction procedure in conjunction with 2D visualisation, the study demonstrates the characterisation of dynamic deflection parameters using a fast, portable ground-based interferometric radar (GBR). Comparisons between the GBR results with those of a Leica AR20 GPS indicate a divergence ±12.79 mm. The study utilises SHM framework to acquire, normalise, extract, and validate GBR signals within an SHM framework for structures under test or for deflection validation of the new system.
