    ArchGenTool: a System-Independent Collaborative Tool for Robotic Architecture Design

    Complex robotic architectures require a collaborative effort in design and adherence to the design in the implementation phse. ArchGentTool is a collaborative architecture generation tool which supports the design of the robotic architecture in a multi-level fashion. It comprises high-level conceptual analysis of the system to be designed, as well as low-level implementation breakdown of its functional components, acting complementary to the ROS framework.     Conversational affective social robots for ageing and dementia support

    Socially assistive robots (SAR) hold significant potential to assist older adults and people with dementia in human engagement and clinical contexts by supporting mental health and independence at home. While SAR research has recently experienced prolific growth, long-term trust, clinical translation and patient benefit remain immature. Affective human-robot interactions are unresolved and the deployment of robots with conversational abilities is fundamental for robustness and humanrobot engagement. In this paper, we review the state of the art within the past two decades, design trends, and current applications of conversational affective SAR for ageing and dementia support. A horizon scanning of AI voice technology for healthcare, including ubiquitous smart speakers, is further introduced to address current gaps inhibiting home use. We discuss the role of user-centred approaches in the design of voice systems, including the capacity to handle communication breakdowns for effective use by target populations. We summarise the state of development in interactions using speech and natural language processing, which forms a baseline for longitudinal health monitoring and cognitive assessment. Drawing from this foundation, we identify open challenges and propose future directions to advance conversational affective social robots for: 1) user engagement, 2) deployment in real-world settings, and 3) clinical translation

    Object search and retrieval in indoor environment using a Mobile Manipulator

    Robots are increasingly viewed as service agents in offices and homes. In many countries where the average population is aging, robots can be used for elderly care. This Thesis explores one such possibility using a mobile manipulator robot. Such robots have a mobile base to move from one place to another and an arm to pick and place objects. This Thesis considers a problem where the mobile manipulator needs to search for an object in an environment and bring it to some location. The optimal object search is formulated in terms of the popular traveling salesman problem (TSP) that computes the optimal sequence in which the Robot can visit all the possible locations where the object can possibly be. Prior information about the more likely locations is brought in by scaling the edge-weight of the TSP graph through the probabilities of the location. The Thesis can combine the output of TSP with navigation and manipulation planning built on top of Robot Operating Systems (ROS) to build the complete object search and retrieval pipeline. The results of the Thesis are validated both in simulation and actual hardware experiments

    Multimodal Wearable Intelligence for Dementia Care in Healthcare 4.0: A Survey

    As a new revolution of Ubiquitous Computing and Internet of Things, multimodal wearable intelligence technique is rapidly becoming a new research topic in both academic and industrial fields. Owning to the rapid spread of wearable and mobile devices, this technique is evolving healthcare from traditional hub-based systems to more personalised healthcare systems. This trend is well-aligned with recent Healthcare 4.0 which is a continuous process of transforming the entire healthcare value chain to be preventive, precise, predictive and personalised, with significant benefits to elder care. But empowering the utility of multimodal wearable intelligence technique for elderly care like people with dementia is significantly challenging considering many issues, such as shortage of cost-effective wearable sensors, heterogeneity of wearable devices connected, high demand for interoperability, etc. Focusing on these challenges, this paper gives a systematic review of advanced multimodal wearable intelligence technologies for dementia care in Healthcare 4.0. One framework is proposed for reviewing the current research of wearable intelligence, and key enabling technologies, major applications, and successful case studies in dementia care, and finally points out future research trends and challenges in Healthcare 4.0

    A Review on Usability and User Experience of Assistive Social Robots for Older Persons

    In the advancement of human-robot interaction technology, assistive social robots have been recognized as one of potential technologies that can provide physical and cognitive supports in older persons care. However, a major challenge faced by the designers is to develop an assistive social robot with prodigious usability and user experience for older persons who were known to have physical and cognitive limitations. A considerable number of published literatures was reporting on the technological design process of assistive social robots. However, only a small amount of attention has been paid to review the usability and user experience of the robots. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of established researches in the literatures concerning usability and user experience issues faced by the older persons when interacting with assistive social robots. The authors searched relevant articles from the academic databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science as well as Google search for the publication period 2000 to 2021. Several search keywords were typed such as ‘older persons’ ‘elderly’, ‘senior citizens’, ‘assistive social robots’, ‘companion robots’, ‘personal robots’, ‘usability’ and ‘user experience’. This online search found a total of 215 articles which are related to assistive social robots in elderly care. Out of which, 54 articles identified as significant references, and they were examined thoroughly to prepare the main content of this paper. This paper reveals usability issues of 28 assistive social robots, and feedbacks of user experience based on 41 units of assistive social robots. Based on the research articles scrutinized, the authors concluded that the key elements in the design and development of assistive social robots to improve acceptance of older persons were determined by three factors: functionality, usability and users’ experience. Functionality refers to ability of robots to serve the older persons. Usability is ease of use of the robots. It is an indicator on how successful of interaction between the robots and the users. To improve usability, robot designers should consider the limitations of older persons such as vision, hearing, and cognition capabilities when interacting with the robots. User experience reflects to perceptions, preferences and behaviors of users that occur before, during and after use the robots. Combination of superior functionality and usability lead to a good user experience in using the robots which in the end achieves satisfaction of older persons

    A Socially Assistive Robot for Elderly Exercise Promotion

    The population ageing phenomenon leads to an unceasing need for home-based healthcare systems to continuously monitor the elderly’s cognitive and physical health. In this sense, physical activity may be beneficial in preserving cognition in elder life as well as in providing clinicians and therapists with the indicative of elderly’s health condition. Nevertheless, current systems fail to promote and monitor the elderly’s physical activity in their living environments. This paper is aimed at providing a socially assistive robot solution for this task. Since robot acceptance depends to a great extent on its robustness in performing tasks, we have focused on exercise recognition due to its great importance for both clinicians and elderly. For that, two different tasks were carried out. First, an image dataset for physical exercise recognition has been generated. Then, a comparative analysis of several deep learning techniques is presented.     Propuesta conceptual de un sistema de asistencia tecnológica para un paciente con deterioro cognitivo leve: Un caso de estudio

    El presente trabajo hace uso de las primeras etapas del Diseño Centrado en el Usuario (UCD por sus siglas en inglés User-Centered Design), para establecer qué tipo de asistente tecnológico se requiere para apoyar en las actividades que realiza el cuidador principal de una persona con deterioro cognitivo. Se entiende como actividad a la acción que el paciente realiza día a día, por ejemplo: cuando come o duerme. El trabajo se enfoca en un caso de estudio específico, se trata de un paciente con deterioro cognitivo, quien es apoyado por dos cuidadores primarios, los cuales requieren de apoyo para realizar los cuidados necesarios al paciente. Para determinar el tipo de asistente a proponer se elaboraron los siguientes instrumentos: una entrevista y dos cuestionarios, los cuales se aplicaron a los cuidadores primarios del paciente, para conocer cuál es la actividad prioritaria que debe ser atendida por un asistente tecnológico. A partir de los resultados obtenidos de los cuestionarios se realizaron tres propuestas de asistente. Estas propuestas fueron sometidas a una evaluaci´on mediante una matriz de selección, para conocer cuál es la que satisface las necesidades de los usuarios. Finalmente la propuesta seleccionada se describe con más detalle y se define como es que el asistente realizará el apoyo cognitivo para llevar a cabo la actividad prioritaria.Conacyt - Becario Naciona
