    Advancing Measurement Science to Assess Monitoring, Diagnostics, and Prognostics for Manufacturing Robotics

    Unexpected equipment downtime is a ‘pain point’ for manufacturers, especially in that this event usually translates to financial losses. To minimize this pain point, manufacturers are developing new health monitoring, diagnostic, prognostic, and maintenance (collectively known as prognostics and health management (PHM)) techniques to advance the state-of-the-art in their maintenance strategies. The manufacturing community has a wide-range of needs with respect to the advancement and integration of PHM technologies to enhance manufacturing robotic system capabilities. Numerous researchers, including personnel from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), have identified a broad landscape of barriers and challenges to advancing PHM technologies. One such challenge is the verification and validation of PHM technology through the development of performance metrics, test methods, reference datasets, and supporting tools. Besides documenting and presenting the research landscape, NIST personnel are actively researching PHM for robotics to promote the development of innovative sensing technology and prognostic decision algorithms and to produce a positional accuracy test method that emphasizes the identification of static and dynamic positional accuracy. The test method development will provide manufacturers with a methodology that will allow them to quickly assess the positional health of their robot systems along with supporting the verification and validation of PHM techniques for the robot system

    Continuous maintenance and the future – Foundations and technological challenges

    High value and long life products require continuous maintenance throughout their life cycle to achieve required performance with optimum through-life cost. This paper presents foundations and technologies required to offer the maintenance service. Component and system level degradation science, assessment and modelling along with life cycle ‘big data’ analytics are the two most important knowledge and skill base required for the continuous maintenance. Advanced computing and visualisation technologies will improve efficiency of the maintenance and reduce through-life cost of the product.     Verifiable self-certifying autonomous systems

    Autonomous systems are increasingly being used in safety-and mission-critical domains, including aviation, manufacturing, healthcare and the automotive industry. Systems for such domains are often verified with respect to essential requirements set by a regulator, as part of a process called certification. In principle, autonomous systems can be deployed if they can be certified for use. However, certification is especially challenging as the condition of both the system and its environment will surely change, limiting the effective use of the system. In this paper we discuss the technological and regulatory background for such systems, and introduce an architectural framework that supports verifiably-correct dynamic self-certification by the system, potentially allowing deployed systems to operate more safely and effectively

    A Comprehensive Review of Digital Twin -- Part 1: Modeling and Twinning Enabling Technologies

    As an emerging technology in the era of Industry 4.0, digital twin is gaining unprecedented attention because of its promise to further optimize process design, quality control, health monitoring, decision and policy making, and more, by comprehensively modeling the physical world as a group of interconnected digital models. In a two-part series of papers, we examine the fundamental role of different modeling techniques, twinning enabling technologies, and uncertainty quantification and optimization methods commonly used in digital twins. This first paper presents a thorough literature review of digital twin trends across many disciplines currently pursuing this area of research. Then, digital twin modeling and twinning enabling technologies are further analyzed by classifying them into two main categories: physical-to-virtual, and virtual-to-physical, based on the direction in which data flows. Finally, this paper provides perspectives on the trajectory of digital twin technology over the next decade, and introduces a few emerging areas of research which will likely be of great use in future digital twin research. In part two of this review, the role of uncertainty quantification and optimization are discussed, a battery digital twin is demonstrated, and more perspectives on the future of digital twin are shared

    A Data-Driven Predictive Model of Reliability Estimation Using State-Space Stochastic Degradation Model

    The concept of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) provides the foundation to apply data-driven methodologies. The data-driven predictive models of reliability estimation can become a major tool in increasing the life of assets, lowering capital cost, and reducing operating and maintenance costs. Classical models of reliability assessment mainly rely on lifetime data. Failure data may not be easily obtainable for highly reliable assets. Furthermore, the collected historical lifetime data may not be able to accurately describe the behavior of the asset in a unique application or environment. Therefore, it is not an optimal approach anymore to conduct a reliability estimation based on classical models. Fortunately, most of the industrial assets have performance characteristics whose degradation or decay over the operating time can be related to their reliability estimates. The application of the degradation methods has been recently increasing due to their ability to keep track of the dynamic conditions of the system over time. The main purpose of this study is to develop a data-driven predictive model of reliability assessment based on real-time data using a state-space stochastic degradation model to predict the critical time for initiating maintenance actions in order to enhance the value and prolonging the life of assets. The new degradation model developed in this thesis is introducing a new mapping function for the General Path Model based on series of Gamma Processes degradation models in the state-space environment by considering Poisson distributed weights for each of the Gamma processes. The application of the developed algorithm is illustrated for the distributed electrical systems as a generic use case. A data-driven algorithm is developed in order to estimate the parameters of the new degradation model. Once the estimates of the parameters are available, distribution of the failure time, time-dependent distribution of the degradation, and reliability based on the current estimate of the degradation can be obtained

    A framework for aerospace vehicle reasoning (FAVER)

    Airliners spend over 9% of their total revenue in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and working to bring down the cost and time involved. The prime focus is on unexpected downtime and extended maintenance leading to delays in the flights, which also reduces the trustworthiness of the airliners among the customers. One of the effective solutions to address this issue is Condition based Maintenance (CBM), in which the aircraft systems are monitored frequently, and maintenance plans are customized to suit the health of these systems. Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is a capability enabling CBM by assessing the current condition of the aircraft at component/ Line Replaceable Unit/ system levels and providing diagnosis and remaining useful life calculations required for CBM. However, there is a lack of focus on vehicle level health monitoring in IVHM, which is vital to identify fault propagation between the systems, owing to their part in the complicated troubleshooting process resulting in prolonged maintenance. This research addresses this issue by proposing a Framework for Aerospace Vehicle Reasoning, shortly called FAVER. FAVER is developed to enable isolation and root cause identification of faults propagating between multiple systems at the aircraft level. This is done by involving Digital Twins (DTs) of aircraft systems in order to emulate interactions between these systems and Reasoning to assess health information to isolate cascading faults. FAVER currently uses four aircraft systems: i) the Electrical Power System, ii) the Fuel System, iii) the Engine, and iv) the Environmental Control System, to demonstrate its ability to provide high level reasoning, which can be used for troubleshooting in practice. FAVER is also demonstrated for its ability to expand, update, and scale for accommodating new aircraft systems into the framework along with its flexibility.     Analysis of preventive maintenance strategy in off-road trucks

    Abstract Preventive maintenance is an important strategy to improve physical availability, reduce downtime and extend equipment life. In the context of mining, transport fleets are large equipment and are subject to unplanned events that, in turn, interrupt operation and lead to unavailability. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the main causes that influence the throughput of performance indicators of truck maintenance, focusing on the measurement of impacts caused by inefficiency of preventive maintenance. Thus, the data of 118 trucks were collected in 2022 and the performance calculated. The fleet CAT® 797F was prioritized was not adherent to the programmed, resulting in a production loss of 5,086,957 t o n s and, for maintenance, an unavailability was 9,722.88 h and 3,870 failures. Two evaluation requirements were proposed focusing on evaluating the notes and analyzing the adherence to the preventive. In summary, it was found that of the 783 scheduled preventive maintenance only 607 were performed and presented problems related to compliance with the guidelines. Finally, the inefficiency of the preventive ones generated an increase of more than 819 failures and an impact in the availability of 8.16%

    The blessings of explainable AI in operations & maintenance of wind turbines

    Wind turbines play an integral role in generating clean energy, but regularly suffer from operational inconsistencies and failures leading to unexpected downtimes and significant Operations & Maintenance (O&M) costs. Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM) has been utilised in the past to monitor operational inconsistencies in turbines by applying signal processing techniques to vibration data. The last decade has witnessed growing interest in leveraging Supervisory Control & Acquisition (SCADA) data from turbine sensors towards CBM. Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been utilised to predict incipient faults in turbines and forecast vital operational parameters with high accuracy by leveraging SCADA data and alarm logs. More recently, Deep Learning (DL) methods have outperformed conventional ML techniques, particularly for anomaly prediction. Despite demonstrating immense promise in transitioning to Artificial Intelligence (AI), such models are generally black-boxes that cannot provide rationales behind their predictions, hampering the ability of turbine operators to rely on automated decision making. We aim to help combat this challenge by providing a novel perspective on Explainable AI (XAI) for trustworthy decision support.This thesis revolves around three key strands of XAI – DL, Natural Language Generation (NLG) and Knowledge Graphs (KGs), which are investigated by utilising data from an operational turbine. We leverage DL and NLG to predict incipient faults and alarm events in the turbine in natural language as well as generate human-intelligible O&M strategies to assist engineers in fixing/averting the faults. We also propose specialised DL models which can predict causal relationships in SCADA features as well as quantify the importance of vital parameters leading to failures. The thesis finally culminates with an interactive Question- Answering (QA) system for automated reasoning that leverages multimodal domain-specific information from a KG, facilitating engineers to retrieve O&M strategies with natural language questions. By helping make turbines more reliable, we envisage wider adoption of wind energy sources towards tackling climate change
