    Robots in Agriculture: State of Art and Practical Experiences

    The presence of robots in agriculture has grown significantly in recent years, overcoming some of the challenges and complications of this field. This chapter aims to collect a complete and recent state of the art about the application of robots in agriculture. The work addresses this topic from two perspectives. On the one hand, it involves the disciplines that lead the automation of agriculture, such as precision agriculture and greenhouse farming, and collects the proposals for automatizing tasks like planting and harvesting, environmental monitoring and crop inspection and treatment. On the other hand, it compiles and analyses the robots that are proposed to accomplish these tasks: e.g. manipulators, ground vehicles and aerial robots. Additionally, the chapter reports with more detail some practical experiences about the application of robot teams to crop inspection and treatment in outdoor agriculture, as well as to environmental monitoring in greenhouse farming

    Applications of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) in Hydrology: A Review

    In less than two decades, UASs (unmanned aerial systems) have revolutionized the field of hydrology, bridging the gap between traditional satellite observations and ground-based measurements and allowing the limitations of manned aircraft to be overcome. With unparalleled spatial and temporal resolutions and product-tailoring possibilities, UAS are contributing to the acquisition of large volumes of data on water bodies, submerged parameters and their interactions in different hydrological contexts and in inaccessible or hazardous locations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of 122 works on the applications of UASs in surface water and groundwater research with a purpose-oriented approach. Concretely, the review addresses: (i) the current applications of UAS in surface and groundwater studies, (ii) the type of platforms and sensors mainly used in these tasks, (iii) types of products generated from UAS-borne data, (iv) the associated advantages and limitations, and (v) knowledge gaps and future prospects of UASs application in hydrology. The first aim of this review is to serve as a reference or introductory document for all researchers and water managers who are interested in embracing this novel technology. The second aim is to unify in a single document all the possibilities, potential approaches and results obtained by different authors through the implementation of UASs

    Pathfinder autonomous rendezvous and docking project

    Capabilities are being developed and demonstrated to support manned and unmanned vehicle operations in lunar and planetary orbits. In this initial phase, primary emphasis is placed on definition of the system requirements for candidate Pathfinder mission applications and correlation of these system-level requirements with specific requirements. The FY-89 activities detailed are best characterized as foundation building. The majority of the efforts were dedicated to assessing the current state of the art, identifying desired elaborations and expansions to this level of development and charting a course that will realize the desired objectives in the future. Efforts are detailed across all work packages in developing those requirements and tools needed to test, refine, and validate basic autonomous rendezvous and docking elements

    Architecture and Information Requirements to Assess and Predict Flight Safety Risks During Highly Autonomous Urban Flight Operations

    As aviation adopts new and increasingly complex operational paradigms, vehicle types, and technologies to broaden airspace capability and efficiency, maintaining a safe system will require recognition and timely mitigation of new safety issues as they emerge and before significant consequences occur. A shift toward a more predictive risk mitigation capability becomes critical to meet this challenge. In-time safety assurance comprises monitoring, assessment, and mitigation functions that proactively reduce risk in complex operational environments where the interplay of hazards may not be known (and therefore not accounted for) during design. These functions can also help to understand and predict emergent effects caused by the increased use of automation or autonomous functions that may exhibit unexpected non-deterministic behaviors. The envisioned monitoring and assessment functions can look for precursors, anomalies, and trends (PATs) by applying model-based and data-driven methods. Outputs would then drive downstream mitigation(s) if needed to reduce risk. These mitigations may be accomplished using traditional design revision processes or via operational (and sometimes automated) mechanisms. The latter refers to the in-time aspect of the system concept. This report comprises architecture and information requirements and considerations toward enabling such a capability within the domain of low altitude highly autonomous urban flight operations. This domain may span, for example, public-use surveillance missions flown by small unmanned aircraft (e.g., infrastructure inspection, facility management, emergency response, law enforcement, and/or security) to transportation missions flown by larger aircraft that may carry passengers or deliver products. Caveat: Any stated requirements in this report should be considered initial requirements that are intended to drive research and development (R&D). These initial requirements are likely to evolve based on R&D findings, refinement of operational concepts, industry advances, and new industry or regulatory policies or standards related to safety assurance

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION AND REVIEW FRAMEWORK OF ROBOTIC MISSIONS (PERFORM): AUTONOMOUS PATH PLANNING AND AUTONOMY PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

    The scope of this work spans two main areas of autonomy research 1) autonomous path planning and 2) test and evaluation of autonomous systems. Path planning is an integral part of autonomous decision-making, and a deep understanding in this area provides valuable perspective on approaching the problem of how to effectively evaluate vehicle behavior. Autonomous decision-making capabilities must include reliability, robustness, and trustworthiness in a real-world environment. A major component of robot decision-making lies in intelligent path-planning. Serving as the brains of an autonomous system, an efficient and reliable path planner is crucial to mission success and overall safety. A hybrid global and local planner is implemented using a combination of the Potential Field Method (PFM) and A-star (A*) algorithms. Created using a layered vector field strategy, this allows for flexibility along with the ability to add and remove layers to take into account other parameters such as currents, wind, dynamics, and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLGREGS). Different weights can be attributed to each layer based on the determined level of importance in a hierarchical manner. Different obstacle scenarios are shown in simulation, and proof-of-concept validation of the path-planning algorithms on an actual ASV is accomplished in an indoor environment. Results show that the combination of PFM and A* complement each other to generate a successfully planned path to goal that alleviates local minima and entrapment issues. Additionally, the planner demonstrates the ability to update for new obstacles in real time using an obstacle detection sensor. Regarding test and evaluation of autonomous vehicles, trust and confidence in autonomous behavior is required to send autonomous vehicles into operational missions. The author introduces the Performance Evaluation and Review Framework Of Robotic Missions (PERFORM), a framework for which to enable a rigorous and replicable autonomy test environment, thereby filling the void between that of merely simulating autonomy and that of completing true field missions. A generic architecture for defining the missions under test is proposed and a unique Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Logic approach is used as the foundation for the mathematically rigorous autonomy evaluation framework. The test environment is designed to aid in (1) new technology development (i.e. providing direct comparisons and quantitative evaluations of varying autonomy algorithms), (2) the validation of the performance of specific autonomous platforms, and (3) the selection of the appropriate robotic platform(s) for a given mission type (e.g. for surveying, surveillance, search and rescue). Several case studies are presented to apply the metric to various test scenarios. Results demonstrate the flexibility of the technique with the ability to tailor tests to the user’s design requirements accounting for different priorities related to acceptable risks and goals of a given mission

    I am delighted to present this report of accomplishments at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center. Our dedicated innovators possess a wealth of performance, safety, and technical capabilities spanning a wide variety of research areas involving aircraft, electronic sensors, instrumentation, environmental and earth science, celestial observations, and much more. They not only perform tasks necessary to safely and successfully accomplish Armstrong's flight research and test missions but also support NASA missions across the entire Agency. Armstrong's project teams have successfully accomplished many of the nation's most complex flight research projects by crafting creative solutions that advance emerging technologies from concept development and experimental formulation to final testing. We are developing and refining technologies for ultra-efficient aircraft, electric propulsion vehicles, a low boom flight demonstrator, air launch systems, and experimental x-planes, to name a few. Additionally, with our unique location and airborne research laboratories, we are testing and validating new research concepts. Summaries of each project highlighting key results and benefits of the effort are provided in the following pages. Technology areas for the projects include electric propulsion, vehicle efficiency, supersonics, space and hypersonics, autonomous systems, flight and ground experimental test technologies, and much more. Additional technical information is available in the appendix, as well as contact information for the Principal Investigator of each project.     Optimizing Energy Efficiency in UAV-Based Wireless Communication Networks: A Comparative Analysis of TAODV and DSR Protocols using the Trust Score Algorithm for Signal Processing

    This study presents a comprehensive analysis of energy efficiency optimization in signal processing algorithms for UAV-based wireless communication networks. Employing a multifaceted approach that integrates mathematical modeling, game theory analysis, and an array of testing methodologies, the research aims to address the critical challenge of enhancing communication protocol performance while minimizing energy consumption. Central to our investigation is the development and application of the Trust Score Algorithm (TSA), a novel quantitative tool designed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of various signal processing algorithms across multiple dimensions, including energy efficiency, reliability, adaptability, security, and latency. Through detailed comparative analysis and data visualization techniques, the study reveals that the Proposed_TAODV protocol significantly outperforms traditional TAODV and DSR protocols in several key metrics. These include throughput efficiency, end-to-end delay, and packet delivery ratio, particularly as the number of UAV nodes scales up. Such findings underscore the Proposed_TAODV protocol's superior stability and performance, advocating for its potential in improving the sustainability and effectiveness of UAV-based communication networks. The research methodology encompasses both theoretical and empirical testing phases, ranging from simulation-based analysis, to validate the performance of the signal processing algorithms under varied operational conditions. The results not only affirm the superior performance of the Proposed_TAODV protocol but also highlight the utility of the TSA in guiding the selection and optimization of signal processing algorithms for UAV networks

    Traversability analysis in unstructured forested terrains for off-road autonomy using LIDAR data

    Scene perception and traversability analysis are real challenges for autonomous driving systems. In the context of off-road autonomy, there are additional challenges due to the unstructured environments and the existence of various vegetation types. It is necessary for the Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs) to be able to identify obstacles and load-bearing surfaces in the terrain to ensure a safe navigation (McDaniel et al. 2012). The presence of vegetation in off-road autonomy applications presents unique challenges for scene understanding: 1) understory vegetation makes it difficult to detect obstacles or to identify load-bearing surfaces; and 2) trees are usually regarded as obstacles even though only trunks of the trees pose collision risk in navigation. The overarching goal of this dissertation was to study traversability analysis in unstructured forested terrains for off-road autonomy using LIDAR data. More specifically, to address the aforementioned challenges, this dissertation studied the impacts of the understory vegetation density on the solid obstacle detection performance of the off-road autonomous systems. By leveraging a physics-based autonomous driving simulator, a classification-based machine learning framework was proposed for obstacle detection based on point cloud data captured by LIDAR. Features were extracted based on a cumulative approach meaning that information related to each feature was updated at each timeframe when new data was collected by LIDAR. It was concluded that the increase in the density of understory vegetation adversely affected the classification performance in correctly detecting solid obstacles. Additionally, a regression-based framework was proposed for estimating the understory vegetation density for safe path planning purposes according to which the traversabilty risk level was regarded as a function of estimated density. Thus, the denser the predicted density of an area, the higher the risk of collision if the AGV traversed through that area. Finally, for the trees in the terrain, the dissertation investigated statistical features that can be used in machine learning algorithms to differentiate trees from solid obstacles in the context of forested off-road scenes. Using the proposed extracted features, the classification algorithm was able to generate high precision results for differentiating trees from solid obstacles. Such differentiation can result in more optimized path planning in off-road applications

It examines cascading effects on teleoperation communication links (i.e., uplink and downlink) and how delays in data transmission affect the real-time perception and decision-making of operators. By elucidating the challenges and available mitigation strategies, the paper offers valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and practitioners working towards the seamless integration of teleoperation in the evolving landscape of CAVs
