Quantifying Influence of Strategies and Network Properties in Repairing Simultaneous Failures in Smart Grid
The behavior of networks under simultaneous failures has beensubject to various studies in the field of network science. However, themeasures used do usually not take into account the peculiarities of thestudied network. In this paper, we introduce a new measure for powergrids based on the balancing of power and on the accumulated cost ofenergy not supplied (CENS) during an outage. With the help of thismeasure we quantify the performance of seven repair strategies. We findthat both the choice of the right strategy and the topology of the powergrid has a major influence on the outage cost and the survivability ofthe power grid. Additionally, we appraise the potential of smart gridservices and conclude that both distributed energy resources (DER) anddemand response (DR) has a large potential to reduce the cost of anoutage
Dagstuhl News January - December 2011
"Dagstuhl News" is a publication edited especially for the members of the Foundation "Informatikzentrum Schloss Dagstuhl" to thank them for their support. The News give a summary of the scientific work being done in Dagstuhl. Each Dagstuhl Seminar is presented by a small abstract describing the contents and scientific highlights of the seminar as well as the perspectives or challenges of the research topic
Role of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in 6G Radio Localization: Recent Developments, Opportunities, Challenges, and Applications
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are seen as a key enabler low-cost
and energy-efficient technology for 6G radio communication and localization. In
this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current research
progress on the RIS technology in radio localization for 6G. Particularly, we
discuss the RIS-assisted radio localization taxonomy and review the studies of
RIS-assisted radio localization for different network scenarios, bands of
transmission, deployment environments, as well as near-field operations. Based
on this review, we highlight the future research directions, associated
technical challenges, real-world applications, and limitations of RIS-assisted
radio localization
Ono: an open platform for social robotics
In recent times, the focal point of research in robotics has shifted from industrial ro- bots toward robots that interact with humans in an intuitive and safe manner. This evolution has resulted in the subfield of social robotics, which pertains to robots that function in a human environment and that can communicate with humans in an int- uitive way, e.g. with facial expressions. Social robots have the potential to impact many different aspects of our lives, but one particularly promising application is the use of robots in therapy, such as the treatment of children with autism. Unfortunately, many of the existing social robots are neither suited for practical use in therapy nor for large scale studies, mainly because they are expensive, one-of-a-kind robots that are hard to modify to suit a specific need. We created Ono, a social robotics platform, to tackle these issues. Ono is composed entirely from off-the-shelf components and cheap materials, and can be built at a local FabLab at the fraction of the cost of other robots. Ono is also entirely open source and the modular design further encourages modification and reuse of parts of the platform

Innovative Concepts and Applications for Smart Water Cities
Smart cities are emerging worldwide, including economic, institutional, social, and technical concepts in interaction with existing infrastructure to achieve sustainability and increase quality of life. Additionally, digitalisation projects in the field of urban water infrastructure (UWI) aim to increase capacity of existing infrastructure to deal with future challenges caused by climate change, growing of urban population, and maintenance. Therefore, efficient and reliable information- and communication technologies (ICT) represent a key factor for the exchange of measurement data (e.g., monitoring environmental parameters) and interconnections between different participants. However, ICT and system-wide management are not yet widely deployed and mainly concentrated on main points in network-based UWI (e.g., combined sewer overflows, inlet point of district meter areas). In this context, especially the Internet of Things (IoT) concepts enables a large-scale implementation of measurement devices even at underground and remote structures, increasing data availability significantly. Following, new possibilities in the management of network-based UWI are emerging. The research aim of this doctoral dissertation is to contribute to the ongoing development of smart water cities by developing innovative concepts in the field of urban drainage and water distribution network including nature-based solutions
